Cowra Public School NEWS Term 4, Week 1

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Dear Parents Welcome back to Term 4 and a dramatic change to the weather. It is great to see the children wearing their school hats this week to combat the sun and heat during play and we encourage parents to ensure that a school hat is in your child’s bag each day. This term the school will be a very busy place with the annual events that happen at the end of the year occurring, such as presentation days and farewells. Prior to these we will be having a host of events from State Athletics, Narrabeen excursion, Kinder orientations, 2016 Captain speeches, school reports, school magazine and of course the School Spectacular. This week the students have all returned in a very positive manner, with the term having great significance for Year 6 as they start their last term at Primary school. We wish this group the very best for the term and hope they really enjoy their time prior to moving onto high school. This week the school has been extremely lucky to have Cricket NSW conducting skills lessons in the school during PE lessons. The children have enjoyed the experience of a professional NSW cricket coordinator and are now all looking forward to the summer game.

NSW Department of Education Starting today the school hosted the first 2016 Kindergarten Orientation session. We are very excited to see the large number of children who are coming to ‘Big School’ next year. This year we had a tremendous kindergarten group that enabled the school to offer three classes of Kindergarten. At this point we are delighted that we will again be offering the same configuration next year with the current numbers scheduled to commence in 2016. Next week the school will be wishing Isabella Scammell and Brody Fiene the very best at the State Athletics Championship. Both students performed exceptionally well in Dubbo at the Regional finals and we are sure they will do their very best in Sydney. Our school always prides itself on offering tremendous opportunities to children. Our excursion to the School Spectacular for students wishing to watch the wonderful show that will involve over 1000 children including 13 students from our very own school, is still on offer with a minimal cost of $25 for the trip. Only a

few spots are left for this excursion that will take place in November and we encourage any student in Years 3-6 to get in quick to secure their place. Also next week, the school will be hosting the first combined Cowra schools Chess Tournament. Mr Garlick has coordinated the event that will see the best chess players from across the Cowra Schools come together to battle their minds and strategies on Wednesday, 14 October. Finally I would like to thank Mrs Cole for relieving as Principal for the last three weeks of Term 3 while I was relieving Principal of Calare Public School in Orange. I was delighted to return to Cowra to commence the term and was very happy to be welcomed back by staff, parents and students so warmly. Enjoy the week.

CANTEEN NEWS!

PCYC COWRA

With the warmer weather upon us, we will be trialling new healthy snacks for recess starting Week 2.

Touch Football The touch football season starts on Monday 19 October so now is the time to get your team organised. Team nominations need to be completed by 14 October. As in previous years, there will be the Open Mixed Competition, the Under 14 mixed competition, and the primary group development squad for the juniors.

No hot food will be available at recess and we will be fazing out JJ’s and Snackatas. The snacks will include : Apricot balls, Biscuits Muffins (sweet and savoury), Cups with fruit, custard, jelly and yoghurt. These will all be made fresh at the canteen. It will also depend on time and availability of volunteers to what we will be able to make. At the moment process will vary from 50c to $2.00. There will also be changes to the lunch menu, with monthly specials and meal deals. If anyone has suggestions or able to assist, this would be very much appreciated. New canteen menus will be distributed when we make our decision on these lunch time specials. Our canteen offers affordable and healthy food for students and staff. All profits in our canteen are spent on projects within our school. We desperately need volunteers to assist in running the canteen. Please consider spending one day a month or term volunteering. It is a great way to keep in touch with your children and their friends. Volunteer assistance is needed from 9.00am until 2.00pm daily OR perhaps 9.00am until 11.00am to make the lunches. If you can assist please see me in the canteen. Lisa Willis Canteen Supervisor
