MULYAN PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Term 4~ Week 3 www. mulyan-p.schools@det.new.edu.au Dear Parents,

What an amazing fortnight it has been for some of our Primary students:- Jay Cogan, Brayden Turner, Niar Collett and Bailey Beale had the honour of representing Western Region at the State PSSA Athletics Carnival at Homebush last week . They all did Mulyan proud. Some personal best results were achieved and what a memorable experience for these children to compete at Homebush Olympic Stadium. Congratulations. I had the pleasure of sharing a Principal’s Morning Tea with many Silver and Gold Award recipients. It is lovely to have so many wonderful children in our school. Thanks to Trish from the canteen for organising the food for us ~there wasn't anything left at the end!! We are counting down the days to our Annual Spring Fair - Friday, 14th November, 4.30-7pm. We urge you to come along and support the P&C’s major fundraiser. We also had our Parent Meeting for Kindergarten 2015 and our first Orientation session. The children were delightful and we had lots of fun with the Hungry Caterpillar. The teachers are looking forward to getting to know these students and their families. Orientation continues today and next Wednesday, with another Parent Meeting next Wednesday at 9:30am in the VTS. I have been contacted by a representative from RMS following consultation with the school and Cowra Shire. She was particularly concerned about the number of children who are being dropped off at school and picked up and using the road sidecar

door. This is extremely dangerous and a practice that we strongly discourage. Another concern was children who are being dropped off or picked up in Lachlan Street on the opposite side of the road from school and crossing the road unaccompanied by an adult. Regardless of your child’s age, this is an unsafe action as the road is extremely busy during the beginning and end of the school day with traffic and buses. As a result, if you are unable to park on the school side of Lachlan Street, we are asking you to get out of your car and collect your child from the front of the school. No child will be allowed to cross Lachlan Street in front of the school without an adult. Ideally, the pedestrian crossing should be used but I do realise this is not well located and we are talking to RMS about this. Your co-operation with this would be much appreciated as our number one concern is your child’s safety. With this newsletter is a pamphlet, “Road Safety Issues Around the School”. Please take the time to read this and discuss with your child. (If you receive the

set them so that your child can only access age appropriate sites. Please make yourself familiar with this setting or utilise expert knowledge. Children are very techno savvy and I understand it’s difficult to keep up with their knowledge but it would be in your best interest to do so. Inappropriate sites cannot be accessed at school as the Department blocks any site deemed not suitable. What children are seeing and sharing at home does carry over into school and that’s where we then become involved. I personally believe we really need to limit children’s use of any technology, particularly at night as the stimulation from these deter children from having a restful nights sleep. There is much research that suggests all technology should be kept in the kitchen or another room at night and not in the child’s bedroom so there is no temptation to use them late into the night. Perhaps challenge your whole family to a technology (including tv) free night.

Another issue that has been brought to my attention in the past week is children's’ access to the internet and whether they are looking at age appropriate sites. If you allow your child to use social media then please ensure you ‘befriend’ them, be it Facebook, Snapchat, Kick, Instagram or any of the other social media sites. It is important that you are aware of what the children are seeing and sharing, Knowing your child’s password is vital! I-pods and I-pads have privacy settings where you can
