Preimer’s Spelling Bee Last Wednesday, Tom Negus from Year 5 travelled to Sydney to take part in the state finals of the Premier’s Spelling Bee. Tom was one of 42 finalists in the senior section. The finalists came from right across the state. Tom completed the first 4 rounds successfully, but then in the 5th round, he came across a very tricky word that he had not seen before and this ultimately knocked him out. Congratulations Tom on an outstanding effort and being placed in the top 16 spellers in NSW. Thank you to Mrs Wilson who trained and encouraged Tom in class, and in particular, to Mrs Ryan who spent many a lunchtime training Tom and going through words. The word that stumped Tom was olfactory (concerned with smelling) 2016 School Leaders Election Tomorrow at 9.20am, six Year 5 boys and six Year 5 girls, who have been nominated by their peers, will deliver speeches to all the students from Years 2-6 to try to, persuade students to vote for them for a school leaders position for 2016. Intensive Swimming Over the last 2 weeks we have had 60 students attending the special swimming scheme for poor or non-swimmers in Years 2 -6. The scheme is designed to assist students become more confident and safer in the water. It is important that, in a climate such as Australia’s, children are sate in and near water. Hopefully these lessons can be followed up by lessons during the holidays if need be. Remembrance Day Last Wednesday, we held a Remembrance Day ceremony at school. At this ceremony we were joined by 4 students from Cowra High School who spoke to us about 4 local men who fought in World War I. Tobie Gilmore, Kurt Johnson, Cameron Dale and Aden Day spoke movingly about their solder and our students listened respectfully and attentively. At the conclusion of their speeches, we observed a minute silence to remember all the fallen. Thank you to these boys, of ex-mulligrubbers, for their outstanding effort. Tiny Teddies Excursion Last Friday, all Kindergarten and year 1 students travelled out to Pinnacles Bakery and Integrated Ingredients to take part in an Open Day put on by Arnott's Tiny Teddies. The students were able to see how Tiny Teddies are made, meet Tiny Teddy himself, decorate their own doughnuts and take part in a colouring competition. It was a great day and many Tiny Teddies were consumed! Congratulations to Brianna Hay who won a years supply of Tim Tams!!!! Day of Notables Next Tuesday, 24th November Stage 3 will be presenting a Day of Notables. Students in years 5 and 6 have been studying and researching a famous person and finding out about them, not only the things for which they are famous for but also the small things that made them who they are. These findings will be presented to the student’s parents and the other classes on Tuesday. The amount of work they have been doing is outstanding and the children have really enjoyed finding out what made their person tick. I look forward to finding out about a whole range of notables including: Neil Armstrong, Oskar Schindler, Mother Theresa, Vince Lombardi, Muhammad Ali, and so on.
