Cowra Public School NEWS Term 4, Week 1
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
NSW Department of Education and Communities
Dear Parents Welcome back to Term 4 and some lovely warmer weather. We have welcomed 10 new students to the school this term, with many students returning to Cowra over the break. It was delightful to see our students return wearing their summer uniforms and eager to get back into their classes with some great recounts of the holidays being seen by many class teachers. I had the opportunity to visit H1 (Miss Hyde's class) on the first morning and enjoyed watching the children participating in sharing time where the children in pairs enthusiastically told their partner about their holiday. The level of attention shown by the listener was greater than if any television show was on and clearly indicated how much children enjoy stories told by their peers. From the end of last term I would like to thank the parents, children and community members who supported the P&C Bingo Night. It was a huge success and a huge thank you to Kylie Woods for calling the night and to Rob and Tori Webster and the team for their organisation before and during the event. Also Nigel Hazell for his work on the BBQ. I would sincerely like to thank all the business houses in Cowra who generously supported the night and recommend patronage to these businesses that support your children. During the break the school has had

several working projects completed including a new phone system, a new air conditioner in the sports centre and a wonderful upgrade to the infants playing area in the laying of new turf. A huge shout out goes again to Nigel Hazell , Vince and also to Ben Casey for their work laying the turf. Soon the children will be able to play on the surface that just needs a little time to bed in. This term the children will be working hard at school heading towards the end of the year and the assessment period. Also the school will have many activities coming up including the major excursion for Stage 3 to Canberra and the annual swimming school. Our school is one that reflects on our achievements and constantly reviews our current practises to improve. We are currently collating data from students, staff and parents and would encourage parents to become involved in our survey by following the links (see page 2) and completing a 5 minute survey. The information is highly valued. Never to stay still for long, planning is well under way for next year as we speak. Traditionally the school has involved the Year 6 children in a transition program with the High School to help with the move from Primary School to High School. This year the High School have trialled a Grade 5/6 transition with Mulyan Public School with success and are keen to expand this concept. The idea is to include Grade 5 in becoming familiar with high school whilst they complete a period of work each week in varying subject areas. Cowra Public and Mulyan Public are both interested in pursuing this as a possibility and would encourage

parent feedback during the planning stage. Please contact the school if you have any questions. This week we are very excited to welcome our new kindergarten students who will be commencing school in 2015. Kinder orientation started today and will be each Thursday over the next four weeks. It has been really beneficial with our preschool’s visits, as nearly all children have been to the school before the first orientation day. Well done to the Mums and Dads today bringing the children in and helping with the success of the day. A huge thank you to the highly skilled kindergarten teachers, Mrs Ryan and Mrs White for making it such a great experience. Heading into the last term I am delighted with the school's attendance rate with a seemingly endless list of students having missed a minimal amount of days from school. Attendance is a key to education and I commend the children and their parents for the value they place in their education. Lastly I would like to mention some achievements over the break. One standout was the Cowra Public School Boy Captain being a member of the NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout U12 team that won the state title. Another success was the cupcake fundraising team who were recognised by the RSPCA for their contribution and effort. All great ambassadors for our school. Brad Tom

The P & C would like to thank Nigel Hazell for organising and laying the turf in the Infants playground over the holidays. The playground needed a spruce up and it now looks great. The P & C committee would also like to thank Sam Casey for fixing Nigel’s tractor following a mechanical hiccup preparing the ground for the turf and Ben Casey and Ed Fagan for their donations towards the turf laying. Also the P & C would like to thank all the parents, friends and community members who supported the Bingo Night last term. The night was a huge success with everyone enjoying themselves.
