Cowra Public School NEWS PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Term 4, Week 3
Dear Parents This will be my final newsletter as relieving principal of Cowra Public School. After discussions with my Director we have decided that the best course of action is for myself to take leave, allowing the newly appointed principal, Mrs Jenny Lewis to commence this term. Term 4 is a time of planning and preparation for 2017 and as such it is more ideal to have the 2017 principal make those important decisions around staffing and expenditure.

Equally passionate are the support staff and front office staff at this school. The kindness, patience, hard work and sincere devotion to the children in their care are a testament to their quality as people. I have felt thoroughly supported by the support staff and thank them for their decency and commitment to the kids in their care. To my hard working General Assistant – my thanks for your dedication to the grounds and for your friendship. To my cleaners – second to none. Thank you for all your hard work.
I have delighted in arriving at Cowra Public School each and every day that I have undertaken the role as relieving principal. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and getting to know the parents and students at this great school and I leave with many fond memories.
I wish you all an incredibly successful 2017 school year. May this school flourish and grow in the coming years.
The teaching staff here at Cowra Public School are a dedicated bunch and care a great deal about your children and their educational development. I would like to thank the staff for their support of me during my time at the school and for their tireless devotion to the students in their care.

NAIDOC PUBLIC SPEAKING STATE FINALS Last Sunday, Tyahla Munro and Mac Webster ventured forth to Dubbo for the State Finals in the NAIDOC Public Speaking Competition. This year, the students were invited to participate in a Zoosnooz Adventure at the Western Plains Zoo, which involved camping with the other competitors overnight. We arrived late Sunday evening at the camp, and not long after, Mrs Long and Mrs Webster realised they had misread the brochures - we were definitely "CAMPING" not "GLAMPING"!! After settling into our tents, we were treated to a fantastic display of Aboriginal dance and a BBQ dinner. Once the sun went down, we were taken on a night tour of parts of the zoo, with students able to see and touch some of our native wildlife - Mrs Long was a little nervous at how close the animals were to the campground! After a very cold night in our tents, we were up early for a backstage tour of the zoo. The students saw tigers up close and marvelled at their majesty and size, whilst Mrs Long kept an eye on the exits for a fast getaway! After breakfast, the serious business of competing commenced, and we watched some high quality debating from the a number of high schools before the primary section of the completion commenced. The standard of competition was very high, with students competing from Orange, Cudgegong Valley, Sturt, Dapto and Griffith Public Schools. Mac and Tyalha delivered a flawless speech, with both students speaking confidently and without any palm cards or prompting. In a narrowly contested decision, we were announced runners up to Orange Public School, who also delivered an outstanding and moving speech. We were privileged to have AFL legend Michael O'Loughlin as the guest speaker on the day, and he presented an inspirational speech to the students about the importance of having goals, sacrifice and working hard to succeed. After the conclusion of the competition, the students were also able to visit the zoo, which was a lovely conclusion to our trip to Dubbo. Trish Long Public Speaking Coach

Congratulations to the fifteen students who took part in the University of NSW Maths test. One students received a Merit Certificate, four students received Credit Certificates and ten students received Participation Certificates.
Cowra Public School Stage 3 students, along with all the schools in the Cowra district has been invited to participate in RESPECT-ED at Cowra High School on Thursday the 10th of November from 10:30-1:30pm. This is a community event focusing on the importance of respectful and successful relationships for everyone. This event will celebrate and showcase what our local children and young people are learning about respectful relationships. ‘Respect –Ed’ is a project that involves local schools and services who are motivated by current research that tells us that promoting healthy equal relationships is the best primary preventative action a community can take to reduce relationship violence. The coming together of students from Cowra Small Schools, Mulyan, St Raphael’s, Cowra High and Cowra Public is a significant acknowledgement of the role respect plays in our lives and in the education of young people. The activities planned for the day will tie in with the White Ribbon campaign which advocates for the need to treat women and girls in our society with respect. There will be a guest speaker, the reciting of the White Ribbon Pledge by male high school students, teachers and community leaders, face painting, balloon art and various displays by schools in the district. The Stage 2 and Stage 3 poetry competition winners will be invited to read their entries on the subject of “Respect.” Cowra Public’s display will feature decorated hands from every student at our school and the theme will be “Hands up for Respect at C.P.S.” We will also have a white ribbon banner on display which all Primary students will get an opportunity to sign if they wish. Stage 3 students will attend the event, travelling by bus which has been generously subsidised by Cowra Bus Service. A sausage sizzle will be provided free of charge for lunch. Year 6 students will remain at the high school after the event for their last transition session whilst Year 5 students will return to school at approximately 1:30pm. A permission note will be distributed to all Stage 3 students this week. If families have any questions or concerns regarding this event please contact Mrs Duncan at school at your convenience.

YEAR 4 ROAD SAFETY PRGRAM
TRANSITION FOR YEAR 6 TO COWRA HIGH SCHOOL
Postponed till a date to be advised Many children ride bicycles, yet have little idea of basic cycling skills and safety, either off or on the roads. Each year children’s lives are lost in cycling accidents. Many of the accidents do not involve another moving vehicle and could be prevented through improved knowledge, skills and attitude. As part of our road safety program, we are conducting a half -day session of cycling activities at school for Year 4. To gain full benefit from the program, children with bicycles and Standards Association of Australia approved cycling safety helmets should bring them to school on a date to be advised. The helmet must be worn in the interests of safety and it is now the law. Children should try to arrange to borrow a helmet for the day if they do not own one. All helmets brought to school should have the child’s name on them. These basic cycling skills and safety lessons DO NOT INCLUDE CYCLING ON THE ROAD. All lessons will be conducted in the school playground. Their aim is to improve cycling safety. Please check your child’s bicycle for safety and discuss the way in which you would like your child to transport the bicycle to school. Parental help in the supervision and instruction of children would be most gratefully appreciated. The course will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and again from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., on a revised date. Children who are not able to get a bike to school for this day are encouraged to make arrangements to share a friend’s bike in order to participate in the bike safety activities. Albert Murray Bike Safety Co0rdinator

TEA TOWEL FUNDRAISER Dear Parent / Carer / Friend, As part of our fundraising efforts for our school’s participation in the Schools’ Spectacular, our school will be creating and selling limited edition tea towels. The tea towel design will be made up of self-portraits drawn by all our children and staff. The pictures and names will be arranged all together to create two commemorative designs, one for the infants section and one for the primary section. The tea towels will be screen printed in Royal Blue onto premium quality white cotton tea towels (50x70cm). We chose the tea towels because everyone loves them - the children are thrilled to see their own artwork in print; they make a lasting memento to remember classmates, are amazing as gifts for parents, relatives and special friends or just use them to dry the dishes! The tea towels will be available early in term 4, so they will make SPECTACULAR Christmas gifts, especially for those friends and family that can be hard to buy for. Make sure you don’t miss out. There is a sample of the Infants & Primary tea towels on the back. It is only $15 for one limited edition tea towel, or save by ordering 3 for $40. Don’t forget to order a few extras for family members and your keepsake box. Tea towels can be ordered by completing the form below and returning with payment in an envelope clearly marked “TEA TOWEL ORDER”. Payments can also be made by electronic transfer by going onto the Cowra Public School website and clicking on the “make a payment” option. (Please note – this option still requires the order form to be returned to the office). Thank you for your continued support. Final orders are due before

LOST CPS SCHOOL JUMPER
PSSA TENNIS
Last Wednesday a Cowra Public School jumper was lost in the vicinity of the primary cricket nets.
Last Friday, 21 October, Cowra Public School sent five tennis teams to the PSSA competition held at the local tennis courts. St Raphael’s and Mulyan Public Schools also sent representatives on the day.
If any one has picked up this jumper by mistake it would be really appreciated if it could be returned to the school office.
The contestants played in a Round Robin and all school were represented in the finals in the day. A team from both St Raphael’s and Mulyan schools were successful, and will compete in the PSSA State Finals in Sydney. It was a fun and challenging day, and a great way to socialise with students from the others schools in Cowra Ms Di Parker Tennis Coach
