LAST DAY FOR STUDENTS

Dear Parents I am delighted to be writing my first newsletter as Principal of Cowra Public School. My first week has been fantastic and I have really enjoyed meeting up again with some familiar faces, and getting to know those not-so-familiar! A huge thank you to Mr Steve Wilkinson and Mrs Millie Eldridge who stepped into the relieving role of Principal during this semester and to Mr Brad Tom who previously led Cowra Public since 2012 – the school certainly is in wonderful shape! Everywhere I look I see high quality learning programs, happy students, outstanding teachers, supportive parents and beautiful grounds. I am thrilled to be joining the Cowra Public School community and am looking forward to many exciting times ahead. This week I was very impressed to watch eight of our Year 5 students present their Captain's speeches to Stage 2 and Stage 3 students, teachers and parents. While each of their speeches were very individual, they all spoke about the qualities of a good leader and how proud they were of their school. Today at the Primary Assembly, the 2017 Captains, Vice-Captains and Prefects were announced and I look forward to working with the Student Leadership Team next year. Sports Captains were also elected today and I congratulate all students who have volunteered to step up and take on these important roles within our school. Well done to you all! On Wednesday we had Mr Peter Newberry from Cowra High School visit the school as our Positive Behaviour for Learning External Coach. Mrs Eldridge had the great pleasure of showing him around the school and visiting the classrooms to see PBL in action. Mr Newberry expressed how wonderful it was to see the respectful, safe and 'on task' behaviours in both the classrooms and the playground. It is clear to see the positive and genuine relationships that exist between the students and the staff in our school. Good luck to the students who will be heading off to Sydney for this year's School Spectacular on Tuesday next week! This is an amazing experience and one which they will remember for many years to come. Thank you to Mrs Cobcroft and Mrs Long who will be accompanying the students while they are away and to the parents who will be heading down later in the week to watch the performances. I'm sure there will be plenty of stories to share when they return. Our Stage 3 students are off to Canberra for their annual excursion on Wednesday morning. I have looked at the itinerary and have to admit, I am a bit jealous! Parliament House, Questacon, Ten-pin Bowling and the Dinosaur Museum are just a few of the exciting places they are going to visit. Thank you to the Stage 3 teachers for their organisation of such a well-balanced excursion with plenty of educational experiences and lots of fun! Just a reminder that the bus will be departing at 7.30am and will return at 4.15pm on Friday. Thank you to all the staff, students and parents who have made me feel so welcome this week. I am really looking forward to working with you well into the future. Kind Regards, Jenny Lewis

YEAR 4 ROAD SAFETY PRGRAM - NEW DATE - TUESDAY 29TH NOV Many children ride bicycles, yet have little idea of basic cycling skills and safety, either off or on the roads. Each year children’s lives are lost in cycling accidents. Many of the accidents do not involve another moving vehicle and could be prevented through improved knowledge, skills and attitude. As part of our road safety program, we are conducting a half-day session of cycling activities at school for Year 4. To gain full benefit from the program, children with bicycles and Standards Association of Australia approved cycling safety helmets should bring them to school on Tuesday 29th November. The helmet must be worn in the interests of safety and it is now the law. Children should try to arrange to borrow a helmet for the day if they do not own one. All helmets brought to school should have the child’s name on them. These basic cycling skills and safety lessons DO NOT INCLUDE CYCLING ON THE ROAD. playground. Their aim is to improve cycling safety.

All lessons will be conducted in the school

Please check your child’s bicycle for safety and discuss the way in which you would like your child to transport the bicycle to school. Parental help in the supervision and instruction of children would be most gratefully appreciated. The course will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and again from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Children who are not able to get a bike to school for this day are encouraged to make arrangements to share a friend’s bike in order to participate in the bike safety activities.
