Welcome to Week 9! This week our Stage 3 students are enjoying their week long excursion to Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre near Wagga! Mr Garlick, Miss Irvine, Mr Duncombe and Miss Noble have been updating us all with lots of photos and videos from camp, and I think it is safe to say that both students AND teachers are having the time of their lives! Archery, high ropes courses, initiatives, indoor rock climbing, circus skills, kayaking and canoeing, raft building and a crazy MUD RUN are just some of the activities that they have been involved in so far! Students will arrive back at school on Friday afternoon at approximately 2:45pm and I’m sure will have lots of amazing stories to share. What a terrific way to end the year! I am pleased to announce that Mrs Mel Montgomery was successful, through the merit selection process, in being offered the permanent position of classroom teacher at CPS. Mel has been teaching at our school for several years as a temporary teacher and we are thrilled to have her join the staff in a permanent capacity in 2018. Sadly next year, we will also be farewelling two of our wonderful staff members – Miss Jess Gardoll will be taking up a position at Dubbo West PS and Mr Don Reid our long-standing Senior Psychologist will be taking long-service leave before retiring mid-2018. Both Jess and Don have contributed enormously in their time at Cowra Public School and we will miss them greatly. Tomorrow sees the end to our annual School Swimming Scheme. Students in Year 2 and H12 have been attending learn-to-swim lessons for the past two weeks and have made excellent improvements in their swimming ability and water confidence. I would like to say a huge thank you to Miss Jess Gardoll and Mr Sam Ryan for their efforts in instructing our students again this year. Learning to swim is a vital life-saving skill and NSW Sport and Recreation are offering learn to swim classes for all ages from the 8th-18th January 2018 at the Cowra Aquatic Centre. Just go to the NSW Office of Sport and Recreation website to register. Just a reminder that school surveys, which were distributed with last week’s Newsletter, are due back to the school office by tomorrow (Friday 8th December). Thank you to those families who have already completed and returned these to school. I look forward to seeing all of our families at our two Presentation Days on Monday 11th December at 9:30am (Infants) and 11:30am (Primary) and again on Tuesday 12th December at 11:30am for the major Primary assembly as we celebrate another wonderful year of learning at Cowra PS. Have a great week… Jenny Lewis Principal

Other teaching positions in the school include Instructional Leaders – Mrs Millie Eldridge and Mrs Adrienne Jones, Learning and Support – Mrs Trisha Long and Mrs Gai Meiklejohn; School Psychologist – Mrs Amy Goodwin; Librarian – Mrs Sheridan Oborn; Reading Recovery and Sport – Mrs Shavaughn Duncan; PE/Sport – Mrs Samantha Dunk; Executive Release/Beginning Teacher Support – Mr Sam Ryan; Music – Mrs Mary-Ann Wright. We also have two classroom teacher positions that are currently sitting with HR staffing and are pending an appointment. We will also be establishing two new positions in the school next year – Mr Chief Vogel will be taking on the role as our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) teacher 3 x days per week and Mr Albert Murray will be our Assistant Principal – Wellbeing and Wiradjuri language teacher. The formulation of the 2018 Stage 1 classes is a change to our current 2017 structure. We will be moving from 2 x Year 2 classes and 3 x Year 1 classes to 5 x Stage 1 (combined Year 1 and 2) classes. This is a decision which the CPS Executive have given much thought and research into and has been done for the following reasons; The organisation of classes into Stages across the school reflects our NSW Syllabus documents - students learning outcomes are organised according to stages which run for 2 years – Stage 3 is Year 5/6; Stage 2 is Year 3/4 Stage 1 is Year 1/2. Kindergarten is a single year stage and known as Early Stage 1. Every syllabus document for all Key Learning Areas is organised in this way. Stage 1 classes allows for extension of more capable students and support for students who find learning challenging as teachers differentiate the learning to suit the child’s ability, not necessarily their age or year level Enables a wider level of social interaction as students will be divided across 5 classes instead of 2 or 3. The number of students in each year level varies and maintaining the current structure would mean Year 2 classes of up to 32 students. Organising Stage 1 across 5 classes means that class numbers are more equal (around 22-23) and enables additional students who may arrive during the year to be spread across more evenly, keeping class sizes smaller. The Early Action for Success framework which our school is a part of (2017-2019) involves the tracking and monitoring of students against learning progressions. This is a continuum of learning where children move at different rates as they progress through the Stage 1 curriculum. Staff will be supported with Professional Learning in TEN (Targeting Early Numeracy) in 2018 and ongoing L3 Training to maintain high level literacy and numeracy delivery in all Stage 1 classes. Class teachers are supportive of the move to Stage classes as it enables greater collaboration across the stage. Research indicates collaborative learning and peer tutoring to have a positive impact (+5 months) on the learning development of students. This is something that Stage 1 classes would enable more readily. The executive have considered this decision carefully and feel that it is a positive move in working towards increasing student outcomes in Stage 1. Our school currently organises Stage 2 and 3 classes in a similar manner and this has proven to be a successful model. This information was discussed with the P&C members at this week’s meeting. Every decision we make has our students at the centre. If any parents have any concerns or questions about the changes to Stage 1 classes for 2018, please do not hesitate to arrange an appointment to speak with an executive staff member or any of our Stage 1 teachers. Kind Regards, Jenny Lewis Principal
