Term 1 Week 9 – Week Ending 24th March 2017
From the Principal’s Desk I would like to thank all the parents, caregivers and community members who attended our fantastic luncheon on Tuesday 21st March to celebrate Harmony Day. Students and staff appreciate your support. The students were very excited to cook and wait on the tables for all of our guests at the luncheon. Our Harmony Day celebrations were aired on Prime 7 last night, hopefully lots of families managed to see it. From all reports it was fantastic. We have been very lucky to entice Geoff Wilson to teach guitar to our Yr4, 5, & 6 students every 2nd Thursday afternoon commencing in Week1 Term 2. If any students do not wish to learn guitar then positions will be offered to students in Yr3 etc. The cost to students is $2.50 per student per group lesson. The school does not own any guitars so hopefully some students can bring their own and we will be able to borrow some from families or community members. We also have Kristie Hodges coming in to teach Marimbas and Singing every 2nd Friday commencing Week 2 Term 2. Only 2 weeks of school until the holidays! Unbelievable how fast this Term has gone!! Have a great week, Kris Pagett Principal

Nut Allergies We kindly ask parents NOT to send any nut products to school, due to the severe anaphylactic shock that some of our students may experience. Your assistance with this is vital for their safety. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to one of the Staff.
Guitar Lessons Next Term Holmwood School will be offering Guitar Lessons to our students. Geoff Wilson has kindly offered to conduct these lessons at a cost of $2.50 per child per lesson. Years 4/5/6 will be the first group to be offered guitar lessons. The lessons are not compulsory so if any students do not wish to participate please let their teacher know. If anyone has a guitar sitting at home and are willing to lend, donate or sell to the school please call the office and let them know. Also if any student has their own guitar and can bring it along for their lesson could you please advise the school as soon as possible so that we can arrange to have enough guitars at the school to begin our lessons.
K/1 Class News We have had a very busy week this week. We had a huge day cooking pancakes on Monday, all the students took it in turns to cook. I must say our Belarusian Pancakes looked amazing and smelt even better. It was very hard for ALL ‘The Ponies’ to resist eating all the pancakes before Harmony Day. A huge big “THANK YOU” to Chelsea’s Grandmother, Carmel, for all her help and for donating maple syrup for everyone to share. Last Friday ‘The Ponies’ had a rare treat, a movie and popcorn session. We watched ‘A Bug’s Life’ to tie in with our Bug theme work. ALL ‘The Ponies’ have worked so hard this term and we have reached over 500 class dojos as a collective. Keep
up the great work everyone, it is a wonderful class to be in and I am so proud of each and every ‘Pony’. This week I sent home a new routine for homework. I have had a few parents approach me with questions which has been great. Please, if you have any questions or concerns come and see me, phone the school, or you can message me through class dojo. Please ensure your ‘Pony’ brings their Dictionary in everyday to utilise during Literacy sessions. Good luck to ALL ‘The Ponies’ for the School Swimathon tomorrow, I hope you all have lots of sponsors and are ready to have some FUN!! Ryan Kiss

Until next week, ‘The Ponies’ Class Teacher Michelle Whitty
2/3 Class News What a fabulous week we have had for Week 9. We have a school full of budding chefs. Lots of students said that they are getting ready for MKR!!! Thank you to Carmel and Jackie our parent helpers for helping us cook our “Draniki” and of course everyone who attended our wonderful luncheon for Harmony Day. On Harmony day we spread the message of living in a peaceful society. Tolerance and being mindful of how other people are feeling is in line with our work on encouraging students to get along with everyone in their life. Homework this week continued on from last with students working on their projects about Turtles and Tortoises. I didn’t send home a maths sheet this week as it was such a busy week. Students are expected to still work on 4 spelling words a night and of course to read every night. Thank you to the students who have been bringing their homework in each day. Our focus in Maths over the last week has been length. We have completed a variety of
activities that the children really loved. They all participated in the hands-on measuring jobs around the school. One group even continued to keep measuring and recording all through lunch. We also discovered how the number operations help us to work out measurement problems. Please keep helping your children to learn their tables. In grammar we revised nouns – common, proper and pronouns - and once again tried to get all students to use capital letters and full stops in punctuation! Each student continued reading their own Giggler story and completing the worksheets. We used the discoveries that we have made about narratives to write our own stories. Some students thought of a character and based their setting and plot around what the character was doing, others based their story on a setting and others the plot. Everyone made a fine effort with writing an imaginative story. The students had a very busy day today with a golf clinic which was followed by setting up gardens that were donated by Bunnings. Staff members from Bunnings came out and assisted the students in setting up the gardens. We finished off the day with a Milo Cricket Clinic. Thank you Bunnings.
Students and familys enjoying Harmony Day
Have a great week everyone. Mrs Pagett and the Stockhorse students
4/5/6 Class News What a fantastic week we have had in the 4/5/6 classroom!! In English, the students looked at the online picture book creator, Storybird. The students are using this interactive tool to create a narrative which they will turn into an interactive picture book. The focus of the task is to display their knowledge of a narrative structure and their creative writing skills. In Maths, the students have been looking at the concept of area. We have looked at a range of strategies we can use to solve area problems. The students used centicubes, rulers, graph paper and the formula ‘length x width = area’. Year 6 were introduced to the area of a triangle. Today, students are working independently to complete set tasks. This week, the students joined the Google Classroom. This tool allows me to set work and assignment for the students to complete when they are with another teacher. It is a great tool for myself and the students. The students have made some terrific progress with their ‘Holmwood Public School Archibald’ art work. They are looking fantastic. I can’t wait to see the finished products. A big thank you to Liz, Katie, Nikki and Karen for all their help with Harmony Day on Tuesday. The Lazanki was delicious!!! Many students learnt new skills such as how to shred cabbage and dice onions. (There were a few tears!!) The recipe is attached for anybody who would like to try to at home. Until next week… Amylee Knight 4/5/6 Class Teacher
P&C Fundraiser Tomorrow the P&C’s first fundraiser for 2017 will be completed by our students. The students will be painting/colouring their plate first thing in the morning. If anyone who has not ordered and paid for their plate yet, they call into the office and complete their order form and pay. Please notify the office if you would like your child’s photo on the plate. Could families who have ordered plates for siblings to colour please call into the office and collect as they cannot be sent home with students in case they are creased or damaged. Thank you.
