Term 2 Week 3 – Week Ending 12th May 2017
From the Principal’s Desk As the weather is cooling down students are wearing winter jumbers to school and during activities are warming up and taking these off. We currently have a lot of unnamed jumpers at the school, when busy kids take them off and forget to collect them afterwards. Please ensure that your children’s names are on all their clothing so jumpers and hats etc can be returned to their rightful owners. Last Monday Mrs Hubbard and I attended the Learning Management Business Reform (LMBR) Launch to learn about the new system that we will be using to manage our school. This program has been designed to provide better systems and smarter ways to work that support a more flexible and accountable working environment for Principals, School Administrative staff, teachers and Counsellors. We will be going live on this system on the 4th September 2017. Mrs Hubbard has 15 training days to learn the system and I have 5. We are going to become experts in a short time!!! The students have been training for the Small School Athletics Carnival in Cowra on Friday. They are running, jumping, shot putting and throwing discus as well as cool marching every day. Please come along and support our students when they are competing.
GO HOLMWOOD!!! PLEASE NOTE: As all staff and students will be at the Athletics Carnival on Friday 12th of May the school will be closed for the day. For urgent inquiries please

Afternoon Procedures for Students Waiting to be Picked up by Parents Students who are not catching buses home after school are to wait on the Admin Office porch. No students are to play on any equipment after school as there is no staff supervision and this becomes a safety issue for students.

Year 4/5/6 Class News This week has seen a change in normal routine as the Year 5 students participated in NAPLAN testing. On Monday, we revised the purpose and structure of persuasive texts. Afterwards the students spent time writing an exposition titled ‘Keeping Animals in Cages is Cruel’. They all came up with some fantastic points for and against the argument. This week, we started reading the text ‘Holes’. The class discussed the setting and the language used to describe the scene. We also looked at developing vocabulary by examining and talking about unfamiliar words. In Maths, we looked at 2D shapes. This included angles such as right angled, acute and obtuse angles. The Orange and Green groups worked with parallel lines, and how to determine the difference between parallelograms and trapeziums. The Purple and Pink groups worked on revision activities centred upon polygons. Polygons are closed shapes which have
three or more angles. For example, a square, triangle and irregular hexagons are all types of polygons. During the last week, 4/5/6 have also participated in music with Mrs Hodges, choir/singing practice and a range of drama activities. We will continue to work on these skills throughout the coming weeks. Just some reminders: Friday – Small Schools Athletics Carnival. Tuesday – GRIP leadership (Year 6) Thursday – Cowra Eisteddfod Choir.
Until next week… Mrs Knight 4/5/6 Teacher
Year 2/3 Class News HOMEWORK: I would like to advise parents and caregivers that normal homework will resume next week!! NAPLAN week has finished. Congratulations to the Year 3&5 students for performing their best in these National assessment tasks. We have been preparing for these assessments for the last 3 weeks and this also gave Year 2 students a chance to revise concepts covered in language conventions (grammar, spelling and punctuation), writing narratives and persuasive texts, reading and numeracy. Welcome back to Mrs Hodges for music every second week this term. She was very excited to be back and also very excited about having a room where the Marimbas can be left set up. Mrs Hodges also helped Mrs Knight with the Choir who are competing at the Eisteddfod next Thursday. Good Luck! Our students are very musical and enjoy performing. Thank you to Mrs Paton who has been filling in for me and also Mrs Knight and Mrs Whitty who take extra students from the Stockhorses at a moment’s notice if a casual could not be organised. Hopefully next week we will be back to our normal routine after the hectic start that we have had to this term. Have a great week everyone. Stockhorse students and Mrs Pagett
K/1 Class News WOW, Term 2 is flying by so fast with so many wonderful activities and events planned for this term. Last week ‘The Ponies’ had their first music lesson with Mrs Hodges. I am sure ‘The Ponies’ were excited to tell their families all about it. It was amazing to see how
quickly the students were able to pick up how to play the Marimbas. This week in maths we have been exploring money. The students have loved playing with the coins and counting by 5’s, 10’s, 20’s and 50’s. It can be a tricky concept to understand but all ‘The Ponies’ are trying their best. All ‘The Ponies’ are excited to be completing the first stage of the Jolly Phonics Program. On Thursday we will do our last sound ‘ar’ and next week we will start implementing the Debbie Hepplewhite Literacy Program. It explores more in-depth the sounds (phonemes) and the different letters (graphemes) which are used in words but have the same sound for example: ‘ai’ faint, ‘ay’ play and ‘a_e’ fate. Last week in Literacy we explored the Big Book, ‘Smarty Pants’ and the language feature rhyming. As a class we brainstormed different rhyming words and we have made our own version of the book. I’m sure students will love reading this during free reading and peer reading times. This Friday we are off to the Athletics Carnival, we have been practising our sprinting and ball skills in anticipation. I hope all ‘The Ponies’ have fun and try their best at the different activities, meet some new friends from the other small schools and overall have a magnificent experience. Till next week ‘The Ponies’ Class Teacher Michelle Whitty
Library/RFF News On Friday 26 May at 11am sharp, students will be reading a book online with the entire nation! Join us in Mrs Pagett's room to take part. National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 17th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores ageappropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6. Let's get running: Cross Country practise We are in training for the District Cross country competition. We are expecting it to be held on Friday 2nd June. However, we need to practise! Our students will be running a winding and bending cross country course within the school grounds on Friday 19th May from 9:30am sharp. Students aged 8 to 10 will be asked to run a two km course; students aged 11 to 13 will be asked to run a 3km course The point of cross country is to run the entire length, so we're hoping our morning runs before lessons start has got our students up to speed. Please note, students who don't run the full distance for their age range will not qualify for District level.
BOOK FAIR - Reading Aloud Event, Parade and your chance to buy amazing books for your children Our Annual Book Fair Parade event is coming up on Friday 26th May! It will be a hoot. To kick start the event, we are holding a 'read aloud' event at 12 noon – as a highlight to this will be the taking of a photograph to be sent to Scholastic Australia and which will get us in the running to win $1000 worth of books from Scholastic.
Music lessons with Mrs Hodges
After the Read Aloud event, we will be holding our Annual Book Fair Parade under the COLA and we can't wait to see how creative our students will be with the costumes! Then we'll open the library (aka 'Pirate's Den') for attendees to browse and purchase books. It's
a wonderful opportunity for parents and guardians to expand their children's range of reading material. The school receives a percentage of sales, so it's a win all round. The theme of the Book Fair - Be A Bookaneer, where books are the treasure - is why we've decked out our library as a pirate's den, by the way! For more information, visit http://www.scholastic.com.au/schools/bookfairs/ . We look forward to seeing you all there! Mrs Margaret Paton Library/RFF Teacher
