Term 2 Week 8 – Week Ending 16th June 2017

From the Principal’s Desk I hope that everyone had an interesting long weekend and enjoyed the break from the normal routine. The students certainly returned to school refreshed and with a positive attitude to learning. Ms Whitty attended the second session of the course on Gifted and Talented activities for Kindergarten students last Tuesday. She returned with wonderful strategies and activities that can be used with students of all ages. I would like to thank Mrs Paton for teaching the Ponies. They enjoyed learning about the environment and gardening in the afternoon. For the remainder of this term Mrs Beath is going to teach on Thursdays for RFF and Ms Barker is teaching the Stockhorses on Fridays for Principal’s Release. I would like to welcome you both to our school and thank you for your help. The response to the Pie Drive has been magnificent. Thank you to everyone who supported it. The money raised will go towards the cost of the Snow Excursion. YES! We have enough students who have indicated that they want to go to Jindabyne Sport and Rec for our Snow Excursion. At the moment the cost has been reduced to $350 per student due to the Sport and Rec offering us a substantial discount and the fantastic efforts of our hard working people who are working tirelessly with raising funds. We really appreciate your generous support for our school. Kind Regards, Kris Pagett Principal

Year 4/5/6 Class News

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. On Tuesday, 4/5/6 had a visit from Jake’s pet snake, Thelma/Velma. She is a beautiful Children’s snake who enjoyed coiling herself around people’s arms and necks. Thelma/Velma is a non-venomous snake. Thelma/Velma was cold to touch, her strong body and her skin surprisingly smooth. After washing their hands, the students of 4/5/6 have got the opportunity to touch this gorgeous snake. Jake also showed his extraordinary pet to the Stockhorses and Ponies. A huge thank you to Katie (Jake’s mum) for bringing Thelma/Velma to our class. In addition, this week the students have started working on their speeches. Students are required to present a 1 to 2 minute persuasive text speech on a topic of their choice. These will be presented in weeks 9 and 10. They are welcome to work on these at home. 4/5/6 have started work on their ‘Holes’ matrix activities. So far students have produced ‘WANTED’ posters, dioramas, book reviews and much more. 4/5/6 seems to be enjoying this task and I am excited to see the end products. In Maths, we have been focusing on multiplication. This includes multiplying by 1, 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers. Our aim is to be able to recall multiplication facts quickly. Students should be spending some time at home practicing their tables. We will continue to work on this in week 9. Until next week… Mrs Knight 4/5/6 Teacher

Year 2/3 Class News

Stockhorse News This week the Stockhorses have completed their assessment tasks in English and Mathematics. I am very proud of each student because they all made progress this semester. Congratulations to each and every member of the Stockhorse Class.

In Science and Technology the students enjoyed investigating the force of gravity and the upward push of water. They used basketball, tennis balls, bean bags and stones to compare what happened when each item was put into a container of water. First of all each group hypothesised what would happen and then they tested their ideas. They worked in teams and were surprised when the basketball floated but the tennis ball half sank. They decided that the force of gravity was pulling the items down but the force of the water was pushing them up when they had air inside them but the stones sank immediately because they didn’t have any air inside them. The Stockhorse students have been learning about the benefits of drinking water rather than sugary drinks. Some students are convinced that it is a healthy choice. I would like our class to be a H2O! I’m very pleased that they all drink water throughout the day to keep their brains hydrated so they can focus and learn. Have a lovely weekend Stockhorse students and Mrs Pagett

K/1 Class News

‘The Ponies’ Class News Yay! On Friday we finally had our class disco for reaching 1000 dojo points collectively as a class. We invited those students from other classes who would like to join us and had so much fun. I think the older children had as much fun as we did, playing musical statues, dancing the chicken dance, doing the Macarena and getting our grooves on. Well done to ‘The Ponies’ who have really tried hard this semester to reach 1000 dojos you should all be very proud of yourselves. Our class book ‘The Sloth That Tried’ is now in the illustration stage. ‘Ponies’ have had a wonderful time naming their special friends and giving them different character traits. A big thank you to Mrs Kiely and Mrs Paton for spending time with ‘The Ponies’ when I have been unable to be here. I know the ‘Ponies’ had a lot of fun. This week in maths we are exploring data collection; graphs and visual information. It is an exciting subject and I can’t wait to discover what students would like to find out about and how we will present it. We have been learning about ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ in PDH and will be focussing on sustainability this week. We made some interesting things with bits and pieces we have been collecting in the classroom and at home. There are some very imaginative and creative students in ‘The Ponies’. This week I did not send homework home as it was a short week and I thought I would allow ‘Ponies’ to focus on their Rainforest Poster. It does not have to be too complicated; I just want students to explore an animal that they have an interest in. If anyone needs any pictures or information printed and there is not a printer available at home, please contact me I am happy to help in any way to make this task as stress free as possible for families. Till next week, “The Ponies’ Class Teacher Michelle Whitty
