Term 2 Week 9 – Week Ending 23 June 2017

From the Principal’s Desk What a hectic week! Louise Wakeling is at LMBR training in Blayney on Monday and Tuesday this week and I couldn’t find another casual to work in the office. It is amazing what you can do when you have to! Thank you to all the staff who helped to man the office, answer the phone and compile the newsletter. I would like to offer our sincere sympathy to Anita Barrett on the passing of her Grandmother last Friday. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time. Anita has been working here as a casual in the office. Thank you to the P&C for running the yearly Pie Drive and to all the people who ordered pies. We have made a substantial amount of money which goes towards funding the snow excursion to Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre. Thank you to Cheri Mayo who is organising the bags for people to receive their orders. Just a reminder, if any parents or grandparents would like to join our wonderful P&C Association please do not hesitate to contact the school for more information. Don’t forget to book you 3 way interview time with your children’s teacher for next week. Unfortunately I will not be available on Monday or Tuesday due to training for LMBR and the School Plan 2018-2020. Kind Regards Kris Pagett Principal

SCIENCE

This week in science, the Mustangs have been making water wheels in groups. The groups could use cups, sporks (a spoon/fork combination), straws, skewers, string, highlighters, rubbers, paddle pop sticks, play do and sticky tape. When they had finished we had to test the water wheels. After experimenting we had to adjust what needed to be fixed and test them again. BY CHARLI AND CHARLOTTE MATHS This week in Maths we have been doing chance and probability. We also have been playing some maths games about chance and probability like Beat the Teacher. Beat the Teacher is a game where the teacher writes some numbers on the board and we roll 2 dice. If it has our number on the board you win a point. We also played heads and tails and last but not least, the chocolate game. It was so fun. You had to have two dice and if you roll a double you get to cut the chocolate and eat it, but only after you got dressed up!! …by Hayley Cameron Until next week… Mrs Knight 4/5/6 Teacher

Year 2/3 Class News Stockhorse News

We are fast approaching the end of term and flat out trying to finish all our topics for this term. In English we have been learning about the different types of comprehension strategies and applying this knowledge to our Reading 2 Learn passages. We have been identifying the phases of meaning in each sentence of these passages by highlighting each phase. This helps us to read with more expression and understanding. We have also used Microsoft Word to publish our narratives that we wrote last week using the Lane Clark process. The students were keen to learn how to use the spell, grammar and usage checks to correct mistakes. We all enjoy our silent reading time each day when we read a book of our own choice.

This week in Maths we have been revising concepts that we need to revisit after our assessments. The concepts such as Bridging to 10 and split strategies for addition and subtraction, tables, strategies for multiplication and division operations, area and perimeter were explored. The students enjoyed using hands on materials. In Geography we learned about the different types of environment - natural, managed and constructed – and how to look after them. In science we continued to learn about forces and in PDH we are still learning about eating healthy food, the 5 food groups and the number of serves that we should eat from each food group each day. See you all next week for the 3 way interviews. If you haven’t contacted the school to book a time please do so asap. Thanks

Stockhorse students and Mrs Pagett

K/1 Class News

wonderful animals we will learn about next!

This week ‘The Ponies’ we have been exploring maps and directional words, such as right, left, above, under, North, South, East and West. It has been a lot of fun and as a treat we will use our map deciphering skills to find ‘TREASURE’ hidden somewhere at school on Friday. I wonder what treasure lies within the grounds of Holmwood Public School? Only one more week until holidays and a much deserved break for ‘The Ponies,’ who have worked so hard this term. They should all be very proud of themselves. Till next week ‘The Ponies’ Class Teacher Ms Whitty

P&C NEWS As a treat on Friday the very talented Miss Hayley Barker taught our whole school a dance to the song ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’. We have foregone our school morning run to practice the dance and ‘The Ponies’ are really enjoying doing something different and showing their dance moves. In literacy ‘The Ponies’ each wrote a story about their ‘Rainforest Special Friend’. It was amazing to read their stories and I am sure they all enjoyed using their creativity to embark on an adventure. We have nearly completed illustrating our class constructed story ‘The Sloth That Tried’ and students are looking forward to sharing their story with their friends and families. Three students have handed in their ‘Rainforest Animal Project’ due next week. They have presented to the class their project and we have learnt a lot about the animals that were chosen. So far ‘The Ponies’ have explored Toucans, The Birdwing Butterfly and Parrots. I wonder what other amazing and
