End of Term 3! It is hard to believe that we are at the end of another term. Time sure does fly when you are having fun and the last few weeks have just sped by! I would like to congratulate all students for a terrific term of learning. I would like to say a special thank you to the brilliant HPS Staff who work so very hard to provide the best learning environment and opportunities for our Holmwood kids! I hope everyone has a safe and restful holiday and enjoy the opportunity to relax and spend time with friends and family. School resumes for all students on MONDAY 10th October

Staffing Update It is with a great deal of mixed emotions that I wish to inform parents that I have been offered, and accepted the position of Principal at Cowra Public School, starting Term 1 2017. This decision was not made lightly and while I am excited about the challenges that lie ahead, I am also very sad to be leaving the Holmwood School community at the end of this year. I will be speaking with Duncan Auld (Director Public Schools NSW – Orange Network) regarding the Staffing arrangements for next year and will endeavour to keep parents informed of what is happening as information comes to hand.

Manly Selective Schools Band Visit On Wednesday we were privileged to receive a visit from the Manly Selective Schools Band! The Band is on a regional tour and our School was one of the must-see places on their route! Students, staff and parents were entertained for over an hour by the Band who played many Disney theme songs and modern music. Some students even had the chance to try out some of the amazing instruments. What a wonderful experience for our students!

Mia grooving on the Bongo Drums!

Grace enjoyed playing the Sleigh Bells!

World Peace Day Youth Forum Everyone joined in clapping, dancing and singing!

This instrument is almost as big as Daniel…and boy did it make a LOUD noise!

On Tuesday I accompanied our Year 6 students on a highly educational and productive day to the Cowra Council Chambers and Civic Centre for the World Peace Day Youth Forum. Our students were very engaged and motivated. This was reflected in their involvement in the activities and also the positive feedback that I received regarding the high standard of our HPS students. The students had the opportunity to meet with our Mayor, Mr Bill West, who spoke to them about the role of the Council in our town. Mr Lawrance Ryan kindly took the students on a tour of the Council Chambers so that they could meet the Managers of different departments and gain an understanding of career opportunities for the future. Our students combined with students from Cowra Public, Mulyan Public and Cowra High School to participate with the Cowra Youth Council in the Peace Forum, on World Peace Day. The workshops focused on how “Peace Begins With You” and each person’s responsibilities towards achieving a more peaceful community, country and world. The day culminated with each student making an individual Peace Pledge and a symbolic Paper Crane.

It was an outstanding learning and social opportunity for our students who are now motivated in becoming more involved in community events and the Cowra Youth Council, which works to improve Cowra for our youth and to become global responsible citizens. Thank you for your wonderful support all term and I hope you all have a relaxing, safe and happy holiday, whilst enjoying keeping fit and active and reading for relaxation and learning. Have a nice relaxing break. See you in Term 4!!!

Wow! Only one day left of a busy term 3! Week 10 was to be Miss Thompson’s last week of joining 1/2 in the classroom. Stage 2 Class News As Term 3 comes to an end, I’m reflecting on the events of the Term and I am immensely proud of each and every student in the 3/4 classroom they have

excelled and really extended themselves to work at 100% and to the best of their ability. It has certainly been a very productive and busy Term for us all! The students’ have been presenting their Olympian PowerPoint Presentations to the class this week and this has definitely been a rewarding and fun experience for everyone. I know they have all really enjoyed learning how to use a new computer software program and developing these skills, which they will continue to use throughout their school and work life. Through our book Unit “Words to Unite us” the students studied a variety of texts written about Intercultural experiences, which provided insights about the people and cultures of Asia and other countries. The students developed their knowledge about difference and diversity in their everyday lives, showing awareness, understanding and acceptance of others. To finish off the Unit, the students have depicted an emotion through colour and art (similar to what illustrators do in texts) to express themselves. Their final Writing task was to write a Personal Response to ‘The Little Refugee’ by Anh and Suzanne Do. After reading these Responses, I know every student loved this book. We hope you enjoyed our little performance today at the end of term Assembly. We had a few reluctant performers when I first suggested the idea, but once I ‘talked them around’ they were happy to put on their magnificent masks and entertain you!! Our published ‘Class 3/4 Recipe Book’ went home yesterday with the students, I hope you enjoy the finished product. The children were very impressed with their published work and how the book turned out.

Stage 3 Class News Stage 3 have had a busy week with Mrs Kiely, Mrs Lewis and Mrs Knight teaching them whilst Ms Edgerton is on leave. On Tuesday the Year 6 students attended the World Peace Day Forum and had a wonderful time mixing with school leaders from Cowra PS, Mulyan PS, St Raphael’s and Cowra High School and learning about ways to create a peaceful community. Also included in their day was a visit to the Cowra Shire Council chambers where they met Cowra Mayor Mr Bill West and even bumped into Christian’s mum Lee!

Christian pictured with his mum Lee who works at the Cowra Council Office. On Wednesday Year 5 and 6 enjoyed completing an “Hour of Code” with Mrs Lewis, which is an online program which teaches students the basics on how to write a Computer Code. Some of our students have become skilled in writing their own code to make objects complete certain actions! We hope you enjoyed today’s assembly performance – our Readers Theatre piece called “The Hidden One”. Tomorrow wraps up a very busy and productive term in the Stage 3 classroom. Have a great holiday everyone! Stage 3 News supplied by Mrs Lewis.

Community News I wish you a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday with your families and I look forward to seeing you for a fabulously enjoyable and busy Term 4! Mrs Fiona Skene
