Excursion to the Cowra MRF Yesterday all students from Kinder to Year 6 went on an excursion to the Cowra Materials Recycling Facility (MRF). This excursion complemented our whole school Science and Technology focus this term on “Recycling”! Students were divided into four groups and taken on a guided tour through the entire centre by Staff from the MRF. The students got to see all the different materials that are collected for recycling, included e-waste, green waste and even old tyres and batteries! We also got to see the conveyor belt in action and watched the workers sort all of the materials that get collected in our recycling bins including glass, paper and cardboard, aluminium cans and plastic. All the students received a special bag with a recycled pen and some information about the MRF. The visit also inspired us in our “Recycled Art” project we are we undertaking this year as part of the Council’s Competition. Thank you to Ms Edgerton for organising such an interesting excursion, the MRF Staff for being such great guides and to Cowra Shire Council for paying for the bus.
Holmwood PS. Mrs Hubbard has investigated a number of different options and attached to this week’s Newsletter is an information sheet with sizing and pricing details. We will have sample sizes at school for your child to try on to ensure correct sizing. Please discuss this with your child and return the attached note as soon as possible.

Life Education Van – Healthy Harold! Next Wednesday 17th August the Life Education Van will visit Holmwood PS. All the students look forward to this event each year and Harold the Giraffe is always popular with students of all ages. The cost for each child to visit the Van is $10.00 however the school will subsidise $2.00 per child, therefore the cost per child will be reduced to $8.00 each. This includes a workbook which students get to keep. Please ensure your permission note is returned before Wednesday.

It would be appreciated if parents could complete the details on the Membership Forms and return to school asap. These are necessary for your child to participate in Gymnastics classes at the PCYC. This year the cost will be just $2 per student per lesson (total $10). Please sign and return the attached permission note and payment of $10 to school by Monday 22nd August.
“Chicken Run” Construction Week!! NEXT WEEK is our HUGE construction week for our “Chicken Run” STEM Project we have been running since Term 2. Students in Years 5 and 6 will be constructing the chicken coop under the guidance of our GA Dave Kiss. All students will need to wear appropriate clothing for building work (warm, long sleeved shirts, jeans) during this week. One important clothing requirement will be enclosed footwear such as work boots or riding boots to ensure our Work Health Safety measures are in check. All the timber and materials will be pre-cut off site and students will mainly be hammering, digging and using power drills. Thank you to those parents who have sent back the roster indicating their availability to help out! It is going to a very exciting week!
Heather Brae Fund-raiser This year we are again running a school fundraiser for the school excursion. All items are well-priced and fantastic quality. For each item sold, the commission is $3.00 (which is an increase of $1.50 per item from last year!) Please note that commissions will be deducted from each child’s INDIVIDUAL excursion fee – so the more your child sells, the more savings they will make. Orders and payment are due by Thursday 1st September.

Kinder Class News Week 4 has whizzed by in the Kindergarten classroom! It is fantastic to see how well our Kinders are reading and writing and continuing to develop their independent working skills! Each morning we focus on phonemic awareness activities (hearing the different sounds in words), handwriting, spelling, reading, writing and grammar activities! We are really enjoying our Pamela Allen Author Study and this week our focused texts were “My Cat Maisie” and “The Potato People”. We have also enjoyed learning all about time in Maths this week and can all read the o’clock times on both an analogue and a digital clock! To help us with reading time, we made our own analogue clocks and digital watches this week and this was lots of fun!

We enjoyed having our new Kinder Transition friends join us again on Tuesday and with the beautiful weather, it was great to get outside and practice our gross motor skills by walking on the balance beam, participating in sack races (sooo much fun!!), using hockey sticks to dribble a ball, stomping with the dinosaur stilts and jumping over hurdles!

Stage 1 Class News This week Stage 1 have been watching, discussing and doing work centred around the Rio Olympics. In writing, we wrote facts about the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. After watching the news update the students as a whole class, came up with a range of interesting facts. We discovered that the Russian team had been banned from the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Stage 1 have been listening to “The Twenty-Seventh Annual African Hippopotamus Race” and engaging with the text “The Possum Creek Olympics”. Next week, Year 1/2 will use this book as a basis for our writing tasks. In Maths this week, the children looked at time. Year 2 (with some help from Year 1) developed their knowledge of ‘quarter past’ and ‘quarter to’ whilst Year 1 focused on ‘half past’. The students also discovered that a clock is like a pizza and we can be ‘cut up’ into quarters and halves. We also looked at digital time and how to read this. It was a little tricky but Stage 1 are doing a great job!!! Stage 1 have been keeping an eager eye on Australia’s Medal Tally. We were all very excited to
Stage 2 Class News We’ve had a lovely week in the classroom this week with everyone happy and healthy, on task, engaged and enjoying school life. One of the highlights of the week was our wonderful excursion on Wednesday to the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF). Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience learning about this incredible facility that we have in our town and how important it is for the environment to recycle. Some of us were blown away by what can be recycled and what can also be reproduced from these recyclable products. A big thank you to Ms Edgerton for organising the whole school excursion and to Cowra Shire Council for making the entire experience possible and for very generously paying for our bus trip. Last Friday, whilst our future Olympians were participating at the District Athletics Carnival, the rest of us at school in the 3/4 and 5/6 classroom joined together and were given the task of completing a research project on Rio de Janeiro and presenting this project on PowerPoint. Some of us in the class had never used PowerPoint before and were a little unsure but immersed themselves in the learning experience and thoroughly enjoyed learning and developing the new skills of research, using
PowerPoint and then presenting to the class. Everyone did a fabulous job and have already asked “when can we use PowerPoint again?” Continuing with our focus on Procedures in Writing, this week we wrote a Procedure on ‘How to make Juggling Balls’. After watching some YouTube clips on how to do this; we had to follow the procedure using the materials of a funnel, balloons, scissors and bird seed to make our own ‘juggling ball’ and then write the procedure using the correct structure. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on exercise and now very proudly own their own juggling ball. Continuing with our focus on Procedures, this term we are planning on making our own class Recipe Book. The students have been asked to bring in at least 2 of their favourite family recipes from home to share for our Recipe Book. The students will bring in the recipes, then type them up and help design a front cover for our book. Once this is done the Recipe Book will be compiled and each student will receive a copy to take home. We are very excited about this little project! News topic next week is: Free Choice. Kind Regards Mrs Fiona Skene Stage 2 Class Teacher
our Maths lessons were all about data and learning about the different types of graphs that are used to record data. They had discussions about the importance of the National Census and the different types of data collected and the reasons why they are collected. In English students are engaged in learning about the migration of people to Australia over the last 200 years. They have identified that there are 3 reasons people might come to Australia. These include being skilled workers, for family reasons and for humanitarian reasons such as refugees and asylum seekers. We are all anxiously awaiting the plans for our Chicken Coop to be finalised, so that our materials can be ordered ready for “Build Week” next week. We still need helpers to assist with the construction phase and it’s not too late to offer your assistance. Please contact the school on 63422172 if you are able to come along and help! Kind Regards, Ms Heidi Edgerton Stage 3 Class Teacher
News from Mrs Kiely
Stage 3 Class News It’s been very nice to see the sun this week! We have all been enjoying our recesses and lunches playing and soaking up the rays. It was fantastic to have a lovely sunny morning for our whole school excursion to the MRF. I would like to thank all the teachers and Cheri for taking the time out of their busy morning schedules for our Science and Art Excursion. I would like to thank the Cowra Council and MRF staff for such a successful excursion. The students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we have learnt a lot about the recycling process and how to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE. This week in Science lessons all students have been busy working on their “Recycled Art” Projects for the Cowra Shire Council Art Competition. During Maths students have been eagerly watching the Olympics and reporting the medal tally of the top five countries throughout the day. This week
