P u b l i c S c h o o l Term 3, Week 4

Wednesday, 9th August 2017 Make a Payment Dear Parents, Welcome to Week 4. Thankyou to all the parents/carers and support who visited the school last week on one or more occasions. It was a wonderful week with a lot of great activities and events. Since the last newsletter the Lachlan Valley Learning Community Concert has taken place. This brought together students from schools right across both Cowra and Canowindra in a wonderful event. Students from our school were involved in the combined dance, drama and choir. Our senior dance group performed magnificently, and the undoubted act of the night was Mrs Wilson’ class performing their drumming routine on chairs and floor. Well done to all the boys and girls and staff who contributed to this event. Thankyou also to the parents who supported the students and got them to and from the Civic Centre. Then, on Thursday we had the Premier’s Spelling Bee school finals for Stage 2 and 3 students. The format of the Spelling Bee is a spell off between students from each class. The students who is able to continue to spell the most words allocated correctly through the rounds becomes the School Spelling Bee Champions. From this event, the champions, along with the runnersup are able to advanced to the Regional Finals to be held in Orange later this term. This year our school Spelling Bee champions are; Stage 3, Natasha Hagar and Stage 2, Samara Lovis. The two runners-up, also advancing to the regional finals are; Stage 3, Bradley Bond and Stage 2, Brock Gavin. Thankyou also to Mrs Ryan who organised this wonderful event. Finally, to finish Education Week, we had our two Education Week Assemblies which were well attended and awards for Education Week were presented to students who have worked consistently well so far this year. Congratulations to all the Award winners. Cowra Breakout Anniversary On Saturday, 5th August the 73rd Anniversary for the Cowra Breakout was held. Our school was represented at the official Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Australian and Japanese War Cemeteries. Four of our school leaders were able to represent us and give up part of their Saturday for the very important community event. Thank you to Mackenzie Crook, Bailey

Callaghan, Jessica Hayes and Zoe Browne. Sport Sport continues at school with a couple of PSSA knockout events as well as the District Athletics Carnival this Friday. Yesterday, our girls soccer team played Cowra Public School in the round of the PSSA knockout. They played extremely well and came away with a convincing win 20, and will advance onto the next round against Wallerawang next Thursday. Congratulations and good luck girls. This Friday, the District Athletics Carnival will be held here in Cowra. Good luck to all our students who will represent our school in all events. Students from this carnival will then be selected to represent the Cowra District at the Regional carnival later this term. Our school is organising this carnival and I know Mrs Johnson has put in a great deal of time and effort to ensure it runs smoothly. Thankyou Mrs Johnson and also to all the other teachers and support staff who are helping on the day. Next Monday our Girls Touch Football team will travel to West Wyalong to play their next round match. This will be a early start for the girls and their supporters as they play at 9.00am. Good luck girls and thank you Mrs Wilson who is coaching them and the parents who are transporting them. Next week Bailey Callaghan will be travelling to Inverell as part of the Western Region boys soccer team to compete in the state carnival. Best of luck Bailey, we look forward to hearing the results. Debating This week our Premier’s Debating team have had two debates. Firstly against Bathurst Public School on Monday where the topic was ‘Parents should not let kids under 10 have any screen time at all’. It was a closely argued topic from both sides with our team unfortunately losing in a very close contest. Today they are debating against Bletchington Public School. As this issue goes to print the result is not yet known. Well done to our debaters, Montana, Mackenzie, Jessica and Jacinta and to Mrs Baratto who has been training them so well. Next Tuesday our Western

Challenge Debating team will take on Bathurst West Public School. Good luck team, results for both debates will be in next weeks newsletter. Sports Shirt At a recent P & C meeting it was decide to bring in a new sports shirt to replace the current white one. Several samples were made up and a final decision on the polo-shirt has been made. The shirts will not be available until mid September and can be purchased from Mr Embroidery and Central West Uniforms. These shirts will be phased in over the next 18 months– 2 years. As the children outgrow the old white shirts or they become unusable the new shirt can be purchased. Then at the end of the phase-in period all students will be wearing the new sports shirt. A copy of the shirt will be on display in the foyer area. John Smith,
