Citizenship Award Week 4 – Addison Skinner
We had another fantastic morning today with our Kinder Transition (KT) class! Our KT students completed Olympic inspired play dough activities, worked on their pencil grip in handwriting, drew some clever self-portraits and created crafty bird-cages with flying parrots in response to the hilarious Pamela Allen book "Clippity-Clop"! Phew...what a busy morning! We can't wait until next Tuesday to do it all again! Next Tuesday we will also host a visit from the Good Start Early Learning Pre-school from 10:30-11:30am. I’m sure our KT students will enjoy showing them around our school!
Addison was chosen as the Week 4 Citizenship Award winner by Mrs Lewis. Addie is in Year 2 and was awarded the Citizenship Award for always being enthusiastic, encouraging and kind when helping others. Addie is a great role model to all students in our school. Well done Addie!
Jeans 4 Genes Day Thank you to all students and parents who supported the Student Council’s Fundraising event last week for “Jeans 4 Genes” Day! In total, we raised $75.00 which
Rori, Ivy, Mrs Webster, Charlotte and Shelby enjoyed making Olympic medals with play dough this week!
Year 6 Graduation Jumper Each year our Year 6 students decide, as a group, the style of commemorative shirt or jumper that they would like to purchase as a memory of their time at Holmwood PS. Mrs Hubbard has investigated a number of different options which were sent out with last week’s Newsletter. We have sample sizes at school for your child to try on to ensure correct sizing. Please discuss this with your child and let the school know if you wish to order a jumper as soon as possible.
Life Education Van – Healthy Harold! Yesterday the Life Education Van and Healthy Harold rolled in to Holmwood PS for its annual visit. All students enjoyed their sessions in the Van and loved getting up close and personal with Harold the Giraffe! Our Kinder students especially loved meeting Harold for the first time, whilst our Year 6’s enjoyed a ‘special’ final goodbye having visited with Harold each year over the past 7 years. Below are a few pictures of the Life Education Van visit – check out our Facebook page for more great photos!
Jake and the Stage 2 class enjoyed learning about the different systems in the body.
The Life Education Van visit is always an exciting time at HPS!
Fire Brigade Visit Kinder enjoyed their very first visit with Healthy Harold this week…
Next Monday afternoon students in K-2 will be having a special visit from the Cowra Fire Brigade as part of their HSIE Unit “Workers in the Community”. They are all very excited about seeing the fire truck and finding out more about the important job the Fire Brigade does!

For each item sold, the commission is $3.00 (which is an increase of $1.50 per item from last year!) Please note that commissions will be deducted from each child’s INDIVIDUAL Excursion fee – so the more your child sells, the more savings they will make. NAPLAN Results
Kinder Class News
Today the parents of all students in Years 3 and 5 received their NAPLAN results. Mrs Skene and Ms Edgerton encourage any parents who have concerns or questions relating to their child’s NAPLAN to arrange an appointment to speak with them. Again I remind all parents that NAPLAN results are a ‘snapshot’ of your child’s performance in one test on one particular day. At Holmwood PS we use a wide range of Assessment tools and strategies to provide a detailed Semester Report of how each student is performing and NAPLAN is only one of these tools.

Week 5 is almost over and that signifies the middle of Term 3! The days are getting warmer and we have loved being outside in the sun this past week! Our Pamela Allen Unit is progressing well and last week we loved reading the book “The Potato People”. We watched a clip on YouTube on how to grow potatoes and planted our very own potato crop! Each student has been placed on the watering roster and hopefully (fingers and toes crossed!) we will have lots and lots of potatoes by the end of the Term! We also created our very own potato people using real potatoes and lots of interesting craft materials including match sticks, googly eyes, pipe cleaners, lace, pins, paper, feathers, etc etc. Take a look at our wonderful creations below!
Check out Kinder and Stage 1’s Potato People! This week in Maths we have been working on our 2 Dimensional shapes including squares, triangles and rectangles. We have played lots of
shape games, printed shapes using colourful paint, made shapes using string AND used the laptops to play online games about shapes. Our favourite game was “Catch the Shape Japer”! It is safe to say that Kinder are “Shape Experts”! On Wednesday we were so excited to meet Healthy Harold and his helper Rae in the Life Education Van. Some words Kinder used to describe Harold the giraffe were cute, funny, soft and cheeky! We can’t wait to see him again next year when we are all in Year 1! Just a reminder that Homework is due tomorrow, along with Humpty Sightword Books. Kind Regards, Mrs Jenny Lewis Kindergarten Class Teacher
Stage 1 Class News We are already halfway through Term 3. The weeks are flying by. Stage 1 has continued with the Olympics focus during Week 5. In English, Year 1/2 wrote about what they would do if they were an Olympic athlete. We have a lot of aspiring gymnasts, equestrian riders and fencers at Holmwood Public School, ready to represent Australia in the 2028 Olympic Games. The students also wrote about their favourite sports and stated the reasons why they liked them. Our Grammar subject in Week 5 was contractions. Using the lyrics to Bruno Mars’ hit song ‘Just the Way You Are’ the children located a range of contractions and discussed what words they were formed from. ‘Do not’ becomes ‘don’t’, ‘I am’
shortens to ‘I’m’ and ‘you are’ becomes ‘You’re’. At the completion of the song the children worked independently to match up the phrases with their contraction in their workbook whilst quietly humming to Bruno Mars. In Mathematics, this week Year 1/2 looked at 2D shapes. Year 1 were introduced to parallel lines, which can never fall in love, and quadrilaterals. The students discovered that ‘quad’ meant four. A quad bike has 4 wheels whilst a quadrilateral has 4 sides. Year 1 also played a matching game where they had to match the 2D shape with its name. Year 2 revised their knowledge of parallel lines and learnt about flip, slide and turn. Year 2 looked at the way a shape either changes or remains the same when one of these actions is performed. A shape that slides will look the same, it just moves spots. Did you know if you turn, flip or slide a circle it will always look the same?
Stage 1 has some very exciting news. During weeks 8, 9 and 10 we will be having a Practicum teacher as a part of our class. Chloe Thompson is rd a 3 year Australian Catholic University student. We are looking forward to having Chloe be a part of the Holmwood family. Until next week… Mrs Amylee Knight Stage 1 Class Teacher
Stage 2 Class News Week 5 has certainly delivered us some glorious weather which we have all been enjoying. Recess and lunch duty has certainly been a lot more pleasant!! The students are enjoying the sunshine, utilizing our fabulous open spaces in our playground with lots of fun games being played by all. The highlight of our week would have to be our very enjoyable and educational visit by Healthy Harold! Healthy Harold delivers a Life Education Program that is invaluable and empowers the children to make safer and healthier choices for their lifestyle. The Primary School Program focuses on issues around food and nutrition, personal safety, physical activity, cyber safety, safety with medicine and legal drugs; tobacco, alcohol and caffeine. It is an excellent supplement to our PD Health Program taught here at school. The 3/4 class all loved learning about the human body systems. We continued our “Words to Unite Us” Literacy Program this week, with the introduction of our new multi-award winning picture book “The Little Refugee” by Anh Do and Suzanne Do. This award
winning children’s book provides us with Anh Do's inspirational story about his family's incredible escape from war-torn Vietnam and his childhood in Australia. Everyone loved this new picture book and was amazed that it was based on the real-life experiences of a refugee and that it wasn’t a fictional story! The illustrations by Bruce Whatley also captivated the students with his use of ink outlines and a mix of warm pastel colours for the pages in Australia and sepia tones for the parts set in Vietnam and aboard the boat, creating a visual contrast between the parts of Do’s life. The children’s task was to complete a story retell using images and the colour tones that the illustrator had used. We look forward to our continued analysis of this wonderful book. News topic next week is: Bring in something smaller than your hand and explain it to us. Kind Regards Mrs Fiona Skene Stage 2 Class Teacher Stage 3 Class News
In Maths we have been learning about 2D shapes and the axis of symmetry. Look at our fantastic Charcoal drawings of animals to demonstrate what symmetry looks like in real life. On Wednesday we had a great lesson with Healthy Harold learning about Alcohol and the dangers of binge drinking. Students learnt how the body processes alcohol and the effects on the body. We discovered that different types of drinks have different alcohol content and 1 standard drink contains 10 grams of alcohol. Kind Regards, Ms Heidi Edgerton Stage 3 Class Teacher
News from Mrs Kiely
Well we are at the end of hump week and half way through Term 3. How the time is going quickly. This week students were working on contracts and completed a variety of activities that involved learning about the Olympics. They watched a BTN clip on the history of the Olympics, discovered the core values of the games, and investigated why the ancient Olympics began. Each day as a class group we analysed the daily medal tally of the countries performances and converted them into different types of graphs.
Congratulations to our Student Council who organised a successful and enjoyable Jeans 4 Genes Mufti Day and Canteen last Friday. Thank you to all the families who supported the Canteen and gold coin fundraiser $75 was raised for this very worthy cause. The Parramatta Mission will be most appreciative of the additional 75 scarves and beanies which have been donated this term for the homeless people. This is our school joint community project which is held each winter as part of our Winter Warmth Appeal. All donations are gratefully appreciated by the many less fortunate people.
The building of our Chicken Run was postponed to Week 7. We had a few minor hiccups in the process and Mrs Lewis, Mrs Hubbard and I have worked tirelessly to rectify these technical delays. The good news is that everything has now been approved and we are ready to start in Week 7! The chickens have been ordered from a poultry dealer and will be delivered on the 9th September. At this stage we will be receiving 5 Isa Brown Hens and 5 Black and White Leghorns. Our Chicken Coop will be large enough to hold up to 20 Chickens. We hope to get a Rooster down the track and eventually breed some baby chickens.
Akiko, Will and Taylah with the donation of scarves for the Winter Warmth Appeal.
Next Friday 26th, the Student Council Committee will hold our Planet Ark Tree Planting Day. Children can bring their own gardening gloves if they wish. Once again HPS greatly values the generous participation of Bunnings in the donation of plants and time to assist this joint school community project.
