School Magazine Pre-orders This year we will again be compiling a Holmwood Public School Magazine. Each student in the school will have their own page where they create a personal profile and submit a piece of writing which they are proud to have published in the magazine. As well as student pages, we feature photo pages of some of the events we have participated in during the year, P&C, Student Leader and Principal Reports and a special page to welcome our new Kindergarten students for 2017. The magazines are printed in colour and bound and as such are expensive to produce. To cover the costs of printing and paper, the school charges $6.00 per copy. If you would like to pre-order a copy of this year’s School Magazine, please complete the order form attached to last week’s Newsletter and return with $6 payment to the school office by Wednesday 7th December. Magazines will be distributed on Presentation Night. There will be some copies for sale however once we run out, there will be no further copies available.

Kindergarten News

Recently the new chickens have produced an increased supply of eggs! It is most likely due to the excellent care and management by the students’ and staff at Holmwood. Kindergarten are responsible for collecting the eggs each day. Just this week the children counted one dozen eggs! This is a special occasion for the school. We are also taking the egg collecting each day as an opportunity to add, subtract to 10 and 12.

This week Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 have been busy learning about Brazil. We have taken a virtual flight to Brazil and enjoyed the sights, sounds and delicious food. The children have all participated in cooking Brazilian Bananas. Yum! In the Kindergarten room we are using some new friends to learn storytelling, counting, drama and social skills. The children enjoy using and working with puppets to help them with their work.

Stage 1 News This week in Stage 1 we have continued to read our class novel ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. The students worked on writing adjectives and descriptions about the four main characters – Boggis, Bunce, Bean and Mr Fox. We also discussed the language and imagery Roald Dahl uses throughout the text and how this information creates a picture in our mind. The students are thoroughly enjoying the text. In writing, Year 1/2 have been writing expositions. The topic was ‘All school students should participate in after-school sport.’ The children came up with some terrific reasons why this should occur including it makes children fit and healthy, it helps children socialise, keeps children out of trouble and children get to play team sports. The students also learnt about paragraphing, correct punctuation and editing. The students also have been working on comprehension skills by looking for clues on the page and inferring what is happening by the descriptions, words used and the accompanying picture. In Maths, Stage 1 have been doing independent revision activities. The focus of this was to look at the strategies used to complete questions. Some strategies used include mental strategies, counting on, bridging, use of concrete materials and number lines. The students are working well through the challenges. All of the students are working well in swimming. There was been improvement noted as the days progress. The children have been working on correct technique, safe entries and exits and endurance. Well done, Stage One. Until next week… Mrs Knight Stage 1 Teacher

Stage 2 News No doubt there were some very tired children after our whole school excursion. I know I was! I hope you have enjoyed hearing all of the fabulous stories. Everyone had a fantastic time at Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre, participating in activities they had never experienced before including: Low Ropes, Orienteering, Initiatives (the team work this required was phenomenal), Rock Climbing (so many students and adults extended themselves outside their comfort zones to conquer this wall!!), Archery, Mud Run, Raft Building (again the team work was extraordinary) and Kayaking, just to name a few!! The night time activities, of Mini Olympics and

Borombola Show, were so much fun!! Everyone had a wonderful time interacting with each other and the students from the other schools that shared the centre with us. Now the excursion is out of the way it is ‘business as usual’ in the classroom as we are working hard to complete units in our core subjects. The excursion offered us an excellent recount writing experience and after reading these recounts it is evident that they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. ‘The One and Only Ivan’ novel is still enthralling us all in the class, providing us with countless opportunities of learning new vocabulary to add to our ‘Picture Vocabulary’ activity. We are gradually completing activities in our ‘Lap books’. In Maths we continued our focus on subtraction, with the Year 4 subtracting and trading numbers up to 5 digits. There have been several quotes in the classroom during these lessons of “this is so much” and “I couldn’t do this at the beginning of the year but now I love it!” So I can safely say the entire class is demonstrating some excellent subtraction skills. We have also been focusing on Volume and Capacity which has provided us with lots of fun hands-on activities. I have included a picture of Jaydan, Katie and Liam placing measurement cards from smallest to largest.

Homework is due back in tomorrow. News topic for next week is: Free Choice. Have a fabulous weekend! Kind Regards Mrs Fiona Skene Stage 3 News After almost two weeks of swimming students are improving their strokes and building up their stamina to increase their distance in swimming. Some of the skills students are developing are stroke correction, back sculling, safety step, diving, breathing correctly and improving their personal best distance. This week in the classroom we had an exciting STEM challenge on Friday, the aim was to build a roller coaster from straws, foil, paddle pop sticks, masking tape and cardboard. Students were paired together and had to collaboratively design and construct a roller coaster so a marble would roll more than 50 cm. It had to include a tunnel and a loop for the marble to go through. Lilly Whitty, Lily Lawler, Taylah and Akiko were successful at the task, well done girls. In maths this week we have been exploring Cartesian coordinates, using grid references to navigate a map, drawing objects using a scale for enlarging drawings.

Swimming for the last 2 weeks has certainly provided the students with the opportunity of improving their swimming skills. They have all enjoyed the opportunity to get wet during this warmer weather!

In English we have started our school magazine pages, editing stories and writing our year six reflections on our time here at Holmwood. We are ploughing our way through our My Place unit learning all of the interesting events in history. Regards Ms Edgerton

A variety of craft and physical play experiences will be on offer to the children throughout each day with the following highlights,

Student Council Helping Hand Hamper The Student Council has had another very productive and successful year and greatly appreciate the generous support of our students and families which has enabled each activity and event to be a huge success. WOW….what an incredible year it has been!! Our final activity for the year is to collect non - perishable food and items for our Helping Hand Hamper. A basket has been located in the foyer where items can be left or given to a member of the Student Council on morning assembly. Thank you for your continued and generous support. Every act of kindness counts and combines to make a big difference in someone else’s life. Kind Regards, Mrs Kiely
