St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 1, Week 1/A Newsletter 30 January 2017 Mrs Trish Malcolm has added Library Assistant (K-12) to her repertoire. Dear Parents As this first year of being a full K to 12 school begins there is immense excitement at St Raphael’s. We look forward to a most stimulating and satisfying time for all. February 1st is the feast day of St Brigid – the patron saint of the Brigidine sisters who conducted our school for 94 years. We are deeply indebted to the Brigidine sisters and pray that they are richly rewarded for their dedication. A Catholic school has two main jobs – to be clearly Catholic and to be an excellent school. Being Catholic means doing the work of the Church (bringing the God to people in ways that are real and relevant). At Mass next Saturday evening teachers and catechists will be “commissioned” (sent out) by parishioners to work on their behalf. Conducting an excellent, Christcentred school is the way we are doing that. New faces among the teachers in 2017: Ms Kathryn Allan, Ms Gabriella Zideluns, Ms Alexandra Hamilton and Mr Sam Rothe will all be working in the Secondary Department. Mrs Anne Hickman will be working in Primary Department and Mrs Megan Jobson and Mrs Jenny White both return to the Primary Department after a time of absence. New roles among the teachers in 2017: Mrs Kylie McNamara, Mrs Carolyn James and Miss Chloe Gannon are coordinators of Curriculum in the Primary Department. Mr Ben Thomson, Ms Claire Spora, Mrs Lenise TidymanCrawley and Mrs Cassie Bennett are Coordinators of Curriculum in the Secondary Department. Mr Darrel Colemane and Miss Renae Downes are coordinators of Wellbeing in the Primary Department. Mrs Sue Whiteley and Mr Steve Thomas are Coordinators of Wellbeing in the Secondary Department. Mr Craig Jeffries is teaching in the Secondary Department P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

Thank you to those parents who have contributed time to maintaining our vegetable gardens and orchard throughout the summer break. Additionally, the laying of soft-fall and artificial grass in the infants courtyard was subject of a couple of working bees and looks and feels tremendous. Thank you for your support. Student Leaders of this year are the focus of our prayers at the Leadership Mass on Friday. Responsibilities of the student leaders are well underway and already our leaders demonstrate great promise for the year ahead. Their representation of St Raphael’s at a couple of Australia Day events was executed with dignity and pride. Guardian Angels (from Year 6) for kindergarten students will soon begin to spend time with their new companions. In the past, close links made here have become long-standing friendships, with gifts given on special occasions and time spent together out of school. Such friendship is a lovely gift to share. The annual Swimming Carnival is being conducted on February 9th (weather permitting). Fitting in events for thirteen year groups within just one day is a logistical challenge in which we try to achieve a balance for the children. It is lovely to see the growth in maturity that has happened among the students since December. Even after a relatively short time away the development is quite evident and ever so rewarding. St. Brigid: A Woman for Our Time On Wednesday February 1st we celebrate the feast day of St Brigid. Being a Brigidine school, St Brigid holds special significance for us. Looking at her life, and at some issues that confront and challenge us, it seems only right that Brigid would hold such significance.

Prayer Brigid, you were a woman of peace, You brought harmony where there was conflict. You brought light to the darkness. You brought hope to the downcast. May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled and anxious, And may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world.

Brigid saw Christ in every person, especially in the guise of the poor person. Those concerned with justice issues are challenged by her response. A sense of justice impelled her to share: “what is mine is theirs”. Her life inspires unity and reconciliation. In a world of much fragmentation, with many divides, there is a search for unity, a search for connection, a search for a sense of the whole family, human and natural. The stories and legends about Brigid depict her as a woman of energetic action which is summed up in the phrase: “…hers is a legacy not of words, but of a lifetime of ministry.” Condensed from “Rekindling the Flame: A pilgrimage in the footsteps of Brigid of Kildare by Rita Minehan CSB For the Calendar  Opening School Mass: Friday February 3rd 9.30am Looking ahead Sacramental Dates  Confirmation Saturday 24th June  Eucharist Saturday 16th September  Reconciliation Thursday 30th November

PASTORAL CARE AND STUDENT WELLBEING Welcome to 2017 - a year which promises amazing possibilities and chances to extend ourselves in many ways here at school. ORIENTATION Year 7 students are entering the next exciting phase of their school life. Helping them to develop confidence and to bond as a group has already begun. Activities on the first 2 days of school will create opportunities for students to challenge themselves by adapting to a very different timetable, and then on a river trip where canoeing on the Lachlan will test their outdoor expertise. St Raphael’s first ever Year 12 students have a busy and exciting year ahead and we wish them well in all their endeavours as members of the school community.

INVITATION TO HSC STUDENTS In 2016 the school began a program called Horizons where occasional speakers provide insights into the wider world and the opportunities available through personal stories and work life experiences. To date we have welcomed ex-student and high-profile scientist Dr Amber Beavis and ABC correspondent Michael Brissenden. Dr Rachael Diprose, also an ex-student of St Raphaels, will be a guest at the next Australian Federation of Graduate Women’s Dinner to be held on Saturday 18 February at 6p.m. at Cowra Golf Club. Rachael will reflect on her time since leaving school in a talk titled “From Cowra to Kalimantan and beyond”, her experiences in providing aid, supporting poverty reduction and the challenges of environmental changes in developing countries. At the special invitation of the organising committee, our HSC students are invited to attend the dinner. Cost $25 (student discount).

UNIFORM The school uniform policy is outlined in this newsletter. Please be vigilant in monitoring uniform wearing. The days when secondary students are required to wear sport uniform will be nominated in next week’s newsletter and in every student diary. Non-compliance in uniform has consequences as it is important that there is fairness for all. Your assistance to the school is requested in the matter of uniform, noting that formal school occasions such as Mass, special assemblies and Awards Day, all students are required to wear correct school uniform (not sport uniform). For all our students at St Raphael’s, every day at school counts. Give your child every chance to succeed… Ms Sue Whiteley - Secondary Pastoral Care and Student Wellbeing Secondary School Uniform

STUDENT DIARY: Each secondary student is issued with a Student Diary at the beginning of the school year. Students are to have it with them in every class and Homeroom. Homeroom teachers will check and sign student diaries each week. Parents are requested to check and sign the diary once a week. The student diary is a quick and easy means of communication between school and home. ATTENDANCE Secondary school begins at 8.50 a.m. every day. It is expected that all students are ready to begin the day at that time. Any lateness is to be explained by parent note and students are required to sign in at the school office if they are late. This is a requirement of legislation as well as the school’s Duty of Care responsibility. Some interesting statistics connected to attendance which are both enlightening and alarming have been provided by the NSW Department of Education in a document called ‘Every Day Counts’. I understand that many of our families help with reading and other things around our school, but it would be very much appreciated if you could give the canteen just one day a term. Children love to see their parents and family members at school. Please don’t have any fears about canteen work we have lots of fun and it is a good way to get to know other parents at the school and make new friends. The infants are really cute as they come up with their 20 cents or $1 and say “what can I buy with this?” I am really hoping that all our new (and existing) families will be able to help this year. I am looking forward to meeting you. Please fill out the slip below as soon as possible if you are able to help and send it in to the office or please ring me on 0427501508. Volunteers already active on the roster don’t need to fill out this form. Yours Sincerely Donna Stokes - Canteen Manager
