St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 1, Week 7/A Newsletter 12 March 2018 conversation with your children about this important issue.

Dear Parents, Last week was Catholic Schools Week and we are grateful for the level of participation in the array of events presented. Ex- student, Dr Matthew Pinson, addressed the CSW Assembly and threw down some serious challenges about what we do with the opportunities we’re offered. Mrs Jenny Allen, Executive Director of schools in the Diocese provided a broad view of the mission of Catholic Schools and how we, at St Raphs fit in that broader context. Last Tuesday a delightful combination of people shared lunch and games – students K-12, parents, siblings, grandparents. It was lovely to see the dynamic and simple sharing of relaxed time on the school lawns. Heritage Day is a time of gratitude to those who contributed in the past to our school and culture and it’s a time for every class to undertake an activity for the benefit of the most needy. Our Heritage Day Fair was feature of Friday and funds raised go to Project Compassion.

Next Monday (Mon 19) evening is the P&F Association Annual General Meeting. Please become active in this important element of the school and make it even more valuable.

Morning Delivery of children Safe morning delivery of children needs consideration and co-operation among motorists. Some important notes:  Go to the front of the available drop-off zone to enable others to park and deliver their children as well.  It’s illegal to park in the Bus Zone and across the driveway  Deliver the children and move away from the delivery zone carefully and promptly.  Between 8:30 and 9:30am the drop-off zone is “No Parking” so you cannot leave your car.  If you want to come into the school, park outside the zone and walk.

On this coming Friday poles will be installed in the Primary Playground in preparation for shade sails over the new deck that the P&F Association is having installed. Some work site restrictions will be in place to ensure the safety of the children. Security gates around the school are closed after 9am to ensure that anyone entering the school does so only through the school office. At 3:15 the gates are reopened. Keeping the children safe is our very highest priority. Friday is named the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. Bullying and violence has no place in our school family and we have to actively address this if it arises. Guarding against such conduct prevents the attitude and culture becoming the normal. Two activities this week are set to focus our attention: A barbeque lunch on Wednesday conducted by the Parents and Friends Association, with funds going to the local branch of Headspace. A mufti day on Friday with a blue theme and gold coin donation with funds raised going to Cowra Headspace. In addition to participating, please make a point of having a solid

Prepare Lent is a time of preparation, a time to prepare for the most holy week in the Churches calendar. It is a time to stop and reflect on whether we are living our lives the way God wants. Lord, May we take time during this Lenten season to prepare our hearts and minds for the Easter Season. Amen

Infants and Primary Sport for this Week All students from Kindergarten to Year Six will be participating in a footy clinic on Wednesday the 14th March. This means that students from Year One to Year Six will be required to wear their sports uniform on Wednesday instead of their usual designated sports day. Kindergarten will already be wearing their sports uniform so there will be no change to their usual routine. We are looking forward to the Footy For Fun Team and the NRL Team spending some time with us. Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au

Quiz Night Success On Saturday 10th March, around 80 people gathered in Billimari to enjoy a fun filled evening of trivia. The Billimari Hall Trust sponsored Olivia McNamara in the Youth Ambassador program for the Festival of International Understanding. The Trust were extremely proud of Olivia's efforts in preparing the evening. On the night, Olivia spoke of the importance of helping the people of Nepal to continue to rebuild their schools after the 2015 earthquakes devastated 5000 schools and killed almost 9000 people. She expressed her gratitude to Samantha MacCabe who helped with the fundraiser. Olivia was also pleased that she was able to hold the function in the village to which she belonged and publicised that the Billimari Hall is available for hire throughout the year. The night was a huge success with many prizes being won. Over $1000 was raised and this could not have happened without the support of the local community and Olivia would like to thank the following businesses for their generous donations. Windowrie Wines, Elders Cowra, The Perfect Health Centre, Canowindra Bottle shop, Scott Vickary Driving Lessons, Cellarbrations, Chris Williams Rural Supplies Canowindra, Lachlan Fertilizers, Cowra, Skinners Butchery, Shoes 4 U, Dream body retreat, Coles, Woolworths, Aldis, Bunnings, Relish, Cowra newsagency, Bushmans boots, Target, Zest Chemist, Sports Power, French’s Store and Galeas Family Farm. A marvellous night of entertainment was had by all. Special thanks to Scott Vickary who did a fantastic job as Quiz Master of Ceremonies on the night. Olivia looks forward to celebrating with all the other youth ambassadors in the lead up to the festival.

Indoor Heated Pool Petition Due to the outstanding success of our local MIPs group, it has become obvious that Cowra has an urgent need for an indoor heated pool that is available throughout the year. This facility would not only support the health and wellbeing of the MIPs , but also be of immense benefit to our schools and sporting/training groups. If this “dream” is to eventually become a reality, the community’s support is vital. A petition is available at the school office and I urge anyone interested in supporting this project to sign it at your earliest convenience. Thank you Chris Webb
