St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 1, Week 9/A Newsletter 27 March 2016
Dear Parents Today Belarusian teenagers danced for our primary children. On the weekend we paraded for the Belarusian guests. Thank you to all who have been active in support of the festival and its goals of international understanding. The fine representation of several Year 11 students as Youth Ambassadors for various community organizations, the excellence of the school’s shopfront displays (winning Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3!), the outstanding choir performance in singing the anthem of Belarus in Belarusian, billeting our Belarusian guests and the strong representation by children and families at the Parade are all sources of immense pride. Thank you and all the best for the festival events of the coming week.
meeting is being conducted on Wednesday evening. A charity Mufti Day is also being conducted on Wednesday. The Annual Athletics Carnival will be conducted on Thursday. A meeting of parents of Year 12 students is being conducted on Thursday Pupil Free Days have been approved for the remainder of the year so please mark them on your calendar. Dates are as follows: April 24 (Day 1 of Term 2) July 17 (Day 1 of Term 3) October 9: (Day 1 of Term 4) December 18 & 19: (Last days of Term 4) Thank you for your ongoing support at this rather tiring portion of the term.

The big weekend was also marked by the “Relay For Life” and it is important to acknowledge and congratulate all those students who, in some form or another, participated in this crucial event. Some students were relaying, some were providing food and refreshment for relayers, some were providing entertainment items through dance and martial arts – to all who supported and participated, thank you. Year 1 classes evacuated their classrooms on Friday and already the strong aroma of new paint is wafting through the buildings as the refreshment process begins. In Week 10 Year 8 students take up their work in our parish by hosting the morning tea for parishioners at the Healing Mass. This hospitality role is taken up twice yearly in the lead-up to Easter and in the lead-up to Christmas.
Help me to grow this Lent in an awareness of the gifts you place in my life and in a greater appreciation for your care. Give me the courage to ask for help. Amen
Intense Professional Learning in preparation for the introduction of new Syllabus Documents is a current major focus for staff members. The Year 12 Curriculum Review and Accreditation is scheduled for Tuesday of Week 10.
Condolences It is with immense sadness that I must inform the school family of the sudden death overnight of Year 12 student, Jessie Irvine. Jessie has been hospitalised this term in Sydney and undertaking testing and therapies for the treatment of stomach cancer. Please keep Jessie's family and her class mates in your prayers as they come to term with this massive loss.

PASTORAL CARE AND STUDENT WELLBEING It has been a busy start to the year at school and there has been a great deal of progress made by everyone. Students have been offered many opportunities to learn in interesting ways both in the classrooms and beyond. At St Raphaels we are very fortunate to teach and learn in state of the art learning spaces in the Secondary Department while the Primary and Infants spaces are beginning to be revamped to match the new areas of the school. Assessments And Exams Each Secondary subject has an Assessment Task which has been set for the term while Year 12 will write their Half-Yearly Examinations in Week 10 (Year 12 have a different semester program and finish their studies at the end of Term 3). Students need to be fully aware of the requirements, deadlines and penalties of the Assessment program. P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
Centenary Of Anzac Exhibition All students Years 7-11 were fortunate to attend this exhibition in Orange which has been travelling across the nation for two years and is almost at its completion. Each student was equipped with an individual audio guide to lead through the various rooms of exhibits which included original artefacts such as personal letters from the front line, photographs and soldiers’ kit. The students took the opportunity to involve themselves in this aspect of Australian history and the individuals who helped make it. Learning beyond the classroom is a powerful and informative teaching tool. Thank you to the teachers who supported the excursion and the students for appreciating the opportunity. The exhibition organisers from the Australian War Memorial were very complimentary about St Raphael’s students and were very keen to photograph our group for their publicity. Year 12 Parent Meeting This coming Thursday evening parents of our Year 12 students are invited to a meeting and get together at 6 p.m. in MSLC. This will be a short gathering to bring everyone up to date with plans for the rest of the year as well as time to discuss how students are managing their Year 12 studies in preparation for the up-coming exams. Please come along to find out what is happening and to have an informal chat with Year 12 teachers. Reminders As Term 1 draws to a close, it’s time for a number of reminders. All families should now be aware of days designated for the wearing of sport uniform. Noncompliance in all aspects of uniform has consequences which students are aware of. Student diaries provide an easy means of communication between school and home. We are striving to improve the use of the school diary and ask that parents make an effort to sign the diary once a week. This is a means for all the people interested in a student’s learning, catching up quickly and addressing any concerns and positive things easily. Ms S. Whiteley - Pastoral Care and Student Wellbeing
Infants Participation at the Athletics Carnival Our annual school athletics carnival will be held this Thursday the 30th March. As usual Kinder to Year Two will be joining everyone a little later. We shall remain at school for the morning session. Have morning tea and then walk together to River Park and meet at the western end of the pool. Each of the Infant's classes will participate in novelty races and will remain in their class group with their class teacher. After the novelty events the children will then participate in the 50 to 100 metre race. Once we have completed our running races, the children will be able to take some time to enjoy lunch and cheer for Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au
their house as their Primary and Secondary team mates continue their competition at the carnival. We shall be walking back to school at 1:30pm. Please note, if it starts to rain we shall leave earlier. The children are encouraged to wear a T-shirt that could have their house colour on it. If your child does not have a red , yellow or blue T-shirt, then a simple ribbon or something similar will suffice. Please don't feel as though a new coloured shirt must be purchased for the day. We warmly welcome parents and carers to join us to cheer each other on in a fun filled afternoon. If you wish to take your child home from River Park, then please see your child's teacher to let them know of your arrangements before leaving.
Secondary Diocesan Touch Trials Touch trials were held in Forbes this month. We took four teams, a first for St Raphael’s, to compete against other schools in the diocese ( Jr Girls and Boys Sr Girls and Boys). Up against the super power schools of Red Bend, James Sheehan and St Johns our teams held their own in sometimes trying conditions. Our wins were few on the day but our efforts were many. One result in particular was the Jr Boys win over St Marys Wellington. Wellington a touch football breeding ground, were stunned by our Jr Boys with St Raphael’s running out 7-6 winners. We were able to gain eight selections in the possible and probable game for all age groups but the day belonged to Ruby Frazer and Matt Cumming. Ruby and Matt gained selection in the Bathurst Diocese team that will compete in Dubbo next term. Ruby’s tenacious defence and pass selection was a key factor in her selection, plus Ruby was on hand for a few run away tries. Matt surprised everyone with his electrifying pace and finishing skills, Matt tallied 20 tries for the day! This was a remarkable effort considering the Jr Boys had only one win during the competition. We wish Ruby and Matt all the best as they attempt to gain selection in the next stage of representative touch football. We thank everyone who participated in the day, our students showed great sportsmanship and our parents were great support.
River Park around lunchtime. Any child who wishes to trial will need a change of clothes and joggers on this day. St. Raphael Representatives Our school has some up and coming Rugby League stars of the future. The following boys were selected yesterday at Oberon to represent Group Ten at upcoming carnivals. Mitch Amos and Bill Statham will be off to Wollongong in June, whilst Mikey McNamara will play in Dubbo in July. Congratulations boys. Future Eels in the making! Rugby League and Netball On Tuesday, 2nd May, all students from the Primary department will be attending either the David Peachey/Russell Richardson Rugby League Gala Day held down at River Park (boys) or up to the Netball courts for a Netball Gala Day (girls). The day is about having fun and being involved in a team sport, giving everyone the chance to represent the school. Rugby League will have one competitive team per age group who will be playing for sheep stations. Trials will be held to determine who is in these teams. For those who miss out on selection from the trial, or who are happy just to be part of a team, they will be placed in a non-competitive team under the safe play code. This means that it will be reduced contact, with players being held in tackles, rather than full on big hits. All boys from Years 3 to 6 will be participating on this day. The netball girls are planning a great day also, with competitive and non-competitive matches. This day coincides with the Coolah Cross Country, so experienced runners may have to decide which event they will compete at. Stage Two, Years 3 and 4, will trial for Rugby League this Friday. If you have any concerns, please contact Mr. Statham at school.
Computer Advice to Parents 1. Have your children block their Facebook page – that means that only their “friends” can have access, not the entire planet. 2. Sign up to Facebook yourself and have your child “friend” you – that means you have access to their page. 3. Visit those pages at random intervals – it will be most enlightening.
Primary Sport Cross Country Early next term, the Coolah Cross Country event will take place. Years 3 and 4 run over the two kilometre distance, whilst Years 5 and 6 race over three kilometres. Tomorrow, Tuesday 27th March, Mrs. Scott will be taking those students who wish to trial down to P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
