St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 2, Week 10/A Newsletter 27 June 2016 HOLY YEAR OF MERCY Dear Parents Officially NAIDOC week occurs in coming weeks through the holiday. We will be celebrating this important event on Friday with Mass at 9:30 and an array of activities designed to engage, challenge and stimulate our children. All members of the St Raphael’s family are invited to attend the Whole School Assembly tomorrow from 11:30am at the church. Students from Stages 4 and 5 are travelling Canberra on Wednesday for a day of integrated learning. Stage 6 students will remain at school focussed on their course work.
A Great and Merciful Heart “Let us ask the Lord, each of us, for eyes that know how to see beyond appearance; ears that know how to listen to cries, whispers, and also silence; hands able to support, embrace, and minister. Most of all let us ask for a great and merciful heart that desires the good and salvation of all” -Pope Francis, Address, 3 May 2014
Several team sporting events are on this week that have representatives away Dubbo, Forbes and Orange. We wish them safe travels and good competitive performances. Reports will be sent out at this week. I expect that it will be a time of recognition and celebration of the wonderful growth that has occurred during the first semester. We prayerfully remember Jaime and Kevin Hodges at this time of the anniversary of their passing. We wish Andrew Casey all the best as he embarks of a trip in these holidays with the Diocesan World Youth Day contingent. Andrew was selected to be one of the group leaders of this wonderful opportunity to gather in Poland with hundreds of thousands of young Catholic people from around the world. During Andrew’s absence at the start of Term 3, Ben Thomson will step into the role of Assistant Principal. May every member of our school family enjoy a safe and refreshing holiday. Term 3 starts for students on Tuesday July 19th. There is a Staff Development day on Christ Centred Learning on the Monday (July 18). Michael Gallagher Principal P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

scraps or old clothing, pieces of wood, soft drink cans, tin cans etc. We do need these items to be clean and safe, for example remove the lid from tin cans etc. One item we are unable to use is toilet rolls. Thank you for your support. LIBRARY NEWS Year 3 and 4 Chess Knockout: after various rounds the competition is still being played as Yoi Yap, Jack Campbell and Rory Sullivan continue to challenge each other to become the 2016 Stage 2 Chess Champion. All students are welcome to play chess in the library on our many chess sets. Premier Reading Challenge: Students from Year 3 to 9 remember to keep a list of your holiday reading so we can add it to your reading challenge booklist for the 2016 challenge. Thank you to all of the students who have been returning their books on time or remembering to reborrow their books when they need more time to read them. We all read books at different rates so it is not a problem when you want to renew your loans. Keep your loans up to date to be in the running for our end of term lucky book draw! Make sure you have a good book to read for the holidays! Happy reading everyone. K. Skinner Librarian Secondary Mathematics News – “MATHS MATTERS!!!” Year 7 – 10 ~ a massive thank you to those parents who have assisted us to encourage some Mathematics to be done at home, as a review for your child/rens learning opportunities. This continual support is extremely appreciated. If, by chance, you have not been shown some work and a Self Evaluation of the topic – please ask your child/ren, as this is a process that will be collected each fortnight, to improve habits to reinforce practice for their own learning. We are encouraging students to think “outside the box” seeking new information and applying it to new situations in Mathematics. With one week of term to go, before holidays, let’s make sure that students can continue to do their best with work being attempted. Over the holiday break, please keep encouraging your child/ren to “have a go” at some Maths activities (eg. Maths Apps, help cook, measure out a structure to be built, play cards or a board game, etc). Speaking of the word “bored” – let them have some down time from technology and dare I say it “let them become bored” – it is great for them to come back to the simple things and enjoy the Problem Solving (which is Maths) that life provides. Year 11 General Mathematics ~ the topic of Financial Mathematics has been creating some very interesting practical real life situations (how to use spreadsheets and earning incomes). By introducing these students to Money Maths, benefit from these discussions can be made for their own situations in the future. If you, as parents/guardians, could take the time to talk with your child about general living Money related mathematics, it could give them a continued realisation that Financial mathematics understanding is so important.

Over the holiday break, these Year 11 students, must make sure to keep taking time each day to continue with their daily routine for Mathematics review (finishing up class exercises from textbook questions / practise reading the comprehension of Past Paper questions on the internet /reviewing their previous topics that they may have had areas of concern). They also have a Driving Assessment task due early next term, which could be one of their focus areas during the holidays. For parents, of students, in all year groups across the Secondary Department, please check the Mathematics work that your child/ren are doing (Written, interactive and visual). If they are not keen to show you then be aware of how much is actually being completed.
