St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 2, Week 10/B Newsletter 26 June 2017 designed to engage, challenge and stimulate our children.
Dear Parents Congratulations to the Year 6 students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday evening. As we physically grow and academically grow, so too do we spiritually grow and Confirmation is an initiation rite into the adult life of the Church. Welcome on board Year 6. This school works closely with the Cowra community in dozens of different ways and we are very grateful for the many ways in which the community supports us. Members of Cowra Rotary Club attended the school last week as guests for a gratitude dinner. Gratitude for the work they do in our community and for the very significant direct support this group provides for the school. Thank you to all the parents and Year 11 students 2018 who have participated so wholeheartedly in the Course Selections, particularly on last Friday and Saturday. At this stage preferences have been taken and the task of line-building is underway. Tomorrow (Tuesday) we have the official opening of the Secondary Vegetable Garden. Wicking beds have been constructed by VET students, guidance has been provided by Alison Rosewarne, beautiful timbers have been provided through Laura Cranney and Hayes Timber, the various soil and gravel types have come through Hibbo’s Hire, Bunnings have provided seedlings and mulch, a Cowra Shire Council grant enabled the project to proceed, Miss Danielle Gibbs and Science students Yr7-10 drew all the elements together to ensure an effective and timely completion.
Reports will be sent out at this week. I expect that it will be a time of recognition and celebration of the wonderful growth that has occurred during the first semester. May every member of our school family enjoy a safe and refreshing holiday. Term 3 starts for students on th Tuesday July 18 . There is a Staff Development day th on Cultural Competence on the Monday (July 17 ).

We thank you Lord, for this term. For the challenges, the successes, and the mistakes from which we have learnt. Be with us as we spend our time with family and friends. Guide us to be peacemakers in our family, and to always be conscious of you in our lives. Keep us safe in our activities; give us good rest and good fun. Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new term. Amen
All of us are members of the St Raphael’s family so you are invited to attend the Whole School Assembly on Thursday from 9:30am at the church. The annual Catholic Parish Debutante Ball is composed of a host of elements, some of those elements are highly visible, many are “behind the scenes” but all are essential to the success of the function. The organizing committee has invested heavily in making Friday evening an event to be treasured by debutantes and their guests. We wish every family involved a delightful evening. Officially NAIDOC week occurs in the first week of July. We will be celebrating this important event on Friday with Mass at 9:30 and an array of activities P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

Her name means wisdom and skill which we need to navigate this 21 century and it's challenges. She is a symbol of our industry grains focus, as well as, "sowing the seeds" of attitude and behaviour change. It has certainly been a rewarding and productive term! Secondary students have all been busy with different aspects of the research for our blog. You are all invited to follow us on straphaelsarchibull2017.wordpress.com as well as our Instagram strapharchie17. Design and tech teams have a concept for "Sow-phie" which we will embark on next term. Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au
It has been wonderful for the Archie blog to witness and be part of the secondary garden and "war on waste". Many thanks to Alison Rutledge who is our inspiration, link to the land and is also organising some wonderful events next term. "Be the change that you wish to see in the world". Year 4 Excursion st On Wednesday 21 June, Year 4 travelled to Bathurst for an excursion to complement their History unit ‘First Contacts’. The first part of the excursion was a guided walk along the banks of the Macquarie River where students dressed as convicts, soldiers and colonial women. The students gained a lot of knowledge from the excursion and were complimented on their excellent behaviour by the tour guides.
During the tour, students were informed of the Aboriginal and European wars that occurred around the local area, the crossing of the Blue Mountains and the settlement of Bathurst. Students then played some games and were taught how to throw a boomerang. After lunch, Year 4 travelled to the Bathurst Goldfields on Mt Panorama where they were informed of life in the times of early settlement. Students were then able to participate in mud brick making, games, damper cooking and tent building.

Therefore, students from Year Three to Six will be required to wear their sports uniform on Wednesday and full school uniform to be worn on Thursday for the K-12 Assembly. St. Raphael's School Group Ten Representatives Mitchell Amos and Bill Statham from our Year Eight group represented Group Ten in Rugby League at the Cluster Carnival in Wollongong last weekend. The Under 14 team were up against some stiff opposition from half the state, as well as a Representative team from Victoria. The other half of the state competed at Forster/Tuncurry on the same weekend. Both young men, affectionately known as the 'Bruise Brothers' on their weekend team, led the boys around the park with strong runs and even stronger tackling. With both boys being big, ugly props, they were there to do the hard yards up the middle and they didn't disappoint! In the end, after three hard fought matches, they lost the Grand Final which saw the winner progress to Cessnock to face the Northern winners at the P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
beginning of the school holidays. Well done boys. EELS in the making, right here at St. Raphael’s! St. Raphael's Students Star at Polding Recently, Stanley Rush and Carter Langfield represented Polding at the superior sport of Rugby League. Carter had been selected to play on the wing for the state carnival down at St. Marys in the Under 11 age group. Polding finished 4th overall out of the twelve teams competing. Stanley headed to Salamander Bay for the Opens competition. He played 2nd Row and prop, with Polding finishing 5th out of thirteen teams. Both boys enjoyed playing against the best in the state at their respective carnivals. Congratulations to you both on your achievements. Maybe the next Semi Radradra and Tim Mannah are current students at our school and we don't even know it!!! Cross Country at Eastern Creek Laura Price attended the Cross Country at Eastern Creek, representing the Bathurst Diocese recently. In her age group, Laura finished 9th from about 60 competitors. This is a great result, with a time of 8 mins and 28 secs for the 2 km. The winner finished in 8 minutes flat, so Laura did extremely well. Phoebe Smith qualified to run at Eastern Creek, but unfortunately injury caused her to withdraw from the event. Keep up the kilometres in the legs girls. Next year will be here before you know it and we hope to see your names up in lights again. Well done. NSW Young Rider State Championships Good luck to Sarah Clark who is participating in the Dressage Section of the U21 Section at the Young Rider State Championships to be held this weekend. We look forward to hearing the results.

Thank you. Carinya Preschool Visit On Wednesday, Carinya preschool children came to check out big school at Saint Raph’s. The children shared some fruit for morning tea, had a drink from our bubblers, visited the library with Mrs Skinner and worked with Mrs English and Mrs Colemane in the Kindy rooms. The play equipment and parachute was fun to use as well. Kindies enjoyed meeting our visitors and took very good care of our Carinya friends.

Ration Challenge 2017 by Miss Danielle Gibbs The Ration Challenge is a week long challenge run by Act for Peace. During World Refugee Week, 18 to 24 June 2017, challenge participants ate the same rations as a Syrian refugee. The rations consist primarily of rice, with some lentils, kidney beans, chick peas, sardines, flour and oil. During the week, participants also spoke out for refugees and raised funds to provide food, education and health care for refugees all over the world. This year I joined in the challenge. I have successfully completed the week of rations. I survived the rice. But the work is never done. And I haven't yet met my findraising goal. I would like to invite the St Raphael's Catholic School community to join me in the challenge. You can visit the website. Read the stories from the refugees who are being helped. Watch the videos. Talk about this issue with your families. And, if you are willing and able, please consider making a donation to provide for refugees. https://actforpeace.rationchallenge.org.au/sponsor?kw =Danielle+gibbs P.O.
