St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 2, Week 1/B Newsletter 26 April 2016
Dear Parents Welcome to the new term. I hope the holiday was refreshing for you all. Scores of stimulating learning experiences have been prepared for our children this term – so hang on and enjoy the ride. Yesterday was ANZAC day. Students and staff participated in paying respect to the fallen and praying for peace. Thank you for your support in having the children turned out so beautifully and respectfully in their uniforms. Today the whole school gathered to commemorate and pray. Lest we forget.
ANZAC DAY They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Lest we forget.
As planned Term 2 commences with students of the Secondary Department using the beautiful new facilities we have been working towards. I want to acknowledge with gratitude the massive investment by many during the so-called holidays – may the students, the teachers and the learning be richly blessed for many years into the future. In addition to the construction programme and the western side of the campus, work began during the holidays on the maintenance and improvement programme on the eastern side of the campus. Toilets in the Primary Department have been refurbished (both Male and Female blocks) an access ramp for the Infants Courtyard has been installed, numerous external doors that have suffered weather damage were replaced and Testing & Tagging of all electrical equipment throughout the school was completed. This marks the commencement of a $150,000 project that came from the recent Maintenance Audit. Additionally, funds have been allocated for internal Improvement Projects that will see existing teaching / learning spaces upgraded. On the technology front, a complete upgrade of all wireless access points throughout the school is now finished providing increased coverage across the whole campus as well as close monitoring capacity. External assessment of literacy and numeracy skills occurs by testing in years three, five, seven and nine. On May 10,11 & 12 the NAPLAN testing will be held. You will receive a detailed analysis of your child’s results in Term 3. The results of these tests assist teachers in developing programmes that are directly relevant to the needs of our children.

Both Year One classes have “blended” to form a vocal choir to compete in the Cowra Eisteddfod in a few weeks. This will be an experience for ALL of our Year One students. For most students this will be the first opportunity to participate as a choir with their peers on stage, before a public audience, judged by an adjudicator, under the bright stage lights. FULL winter school uniform (including jumpers) will be worn on the day. Year One will walk, together with their teachers, to the Civic Centre for their performance on May 13. Students are seated with the school not their parents. Parents and Friends of Year One are encouraged to be a part of the live audience (i.e we need clappers!!). An entry fee is charged for parents/carers on the day. Students will have NO charge. We will walk back to school after our performance to have morning tea at school. Below are the session details for Year One. Friday, 13 May, 2016 Morning Commences at 9:30 AM SECTION 006 STAGE 1 SCHOOL VOCAL Choir (not less than 20 voices) 2 contrasting songs
Numeracy
Writing In the Numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school. Friday 13 May – A ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day.
St Raphael's Netball Gala Day All Stage 2 and 3 girls will compete at St Raphael’s Catholic School Netball Gala Day to be held on Tuesday 3rd May. The carnival is being held at the Cowra Netball Courts. The students will depart from the front of St Raphael’s at 9:00 am sharp and will return by 3:10pm. They will be walking to and from the Cowra Netball Courts. All students are to wear full winter sports uniform. Students can bring a black netball skirt (sports shorts are sufficient), water bottle, hat, recess and lunch. A canteen will be operating on the day. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me via the school office. Looking forward to a great day of netball!! Amy O'Reilly

Students who bring mobile phones to school do so at their own risk – the school will not accept responsibility for any loss or damage to mobile phones. Condolences During the holidays some in our school family suffered significant loss. The father of Jack Ranger (Year 11) and the father of Mrs Inel Date passed away. We offer our condolences and support as both of these families come to terms with their grief. May both of these good men rest in peace. Morning Arrival Time Towards the end of last term concern was raised about the early arrival of children at school, their supervision and safety. Teachers are not on duty until 8:30am. Prior to that time no supervision is provided. Parents need to be aware of the risk this poses to the children technically they are trespassing before 8:30am. Of equal concern is the pattern of consistent late arrivals by particular children / families. This consistently late arrival pattern impacts on learning and if assistance in this matter is required please make time to discuss it with the teachers. Medication Authority Legally, teachers are not permitted to administer medication to students on their own judgment. Children are not permitted to carry their own medication or to self-medicate (except for approved asthmatics and diabetics). If you need your child to be medicated during the day a form from the front office is to be completed that details the medication, dosage, frequency and doctor. Existing authorizations need to be updated. Mobiles and Electronic Devices A reminder about the school policy on mobile phones and electronic devices. “Mobile phones can be viewed as enhancing security for students traveling to and from school. Misuse of mobile phones can lead to disruption of the learning environment, intimidation or harassment by SMS, text message, photographic, video or other data transfer system available on the phone. St Raphael’s students may carry mobile phones to and from school. Once at school mobile phones must be switched off and handed in at the front office. Mobile phones will be locked in a secure place at the office during school hours. At the end of the school day phones may be collected and therefore any voicemails and text messages. Mobile phones may not normally be taken on school excursions. Children will be able to be contacted, via the principal in case of emergencies. Students with phones at school during the course of the school day will have the phone confiscated. Repeated breaches will result in disciplinary provisions.
Portable computer games, cameras, ipods and similar devices should not be brought to school. They will be confiscated if they are brought. Repeated breaches will result in disciplinary provisions.” Canteen Update This week’s roster is as follows: Tues 26 Karen Campbell

I have found different things for our Gluten Free Kids to purchase they have GF beside them or in the Gluten Free section. NO DINO'S ARE SOLD ON THE WINTER MENU SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENCE. They have been replaced by the Pies and Sausage Rolls as both of these products are classified as Amber and we can’t offer all three together. Donna Stokes – Canteen Manager

Cowra NetEd for coaches and umpires The Netball NSW NetEd program is a great educational resource that offers the opportunity for individuals to enhance their personal development and maximise their potential. The program supports the existing NCAS framework in three-hour blocks of educational workshops. They are designed for both aspiring or experienced coaches and officials looking to enhance their understanding and knowledge of the principles of Netball officiating and coaching as well as ways to make your netball environment more welcoming to newcomers. I have attached a copy of the workshop schedule however an outline of the day will be as follows: th When: Saturday 14 May Time: 9am – 5pm Where: Cowra PCYC (Binni Creek Rd venue) & Cowra Netball Courts Course Contact: Kim Jones | 0402 801 905 To Register: contact me via this email address or phone number listed above to register your interest in attending either the coaching or umpiring sessions. Please do not do it online as I will put them all through together once we have the numbers. To help me with the online registrations I would ask if you could send the name, Netball ID number, email address and which session each member would like to attend that would be fantastic and much appreciated. Also I would ask that all registrations be to me before Friday 29th April '16. Cowra Blues AFL Club The Cowra Blues AFL Club are still looking for players in Under 14s, Under 18s and Ladies. The Under 14s need players turning 12, 13 or 14 this year, and play all their football on Sunday mornings so you can still do Saturday sport and have a run on Sundays as well. Training is held Thursday afternoons at 5pm at Mulyan Oval in Bourke Street. If interested please contact Geoff on 0428 413 246.
