St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 2, Week 6/A Newsletter 4 June 2018
The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ
Dear Parents, The pace of the first half of this term has been far from passive. Many events have been packed into a small period. I publicly pay tribute to all staff members and to the many parents who have contributed to these wonderful achievements because the events are characteristically wellorchestrated and that only results from tremendous co-operation and a sprinkle of constructive tension. Over $400 was contributed by students, staff and families on Friday to the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. Thank for your generosity as we support the fine work of our Salvos.
Eisteddfod Band events, Primary and Secondary are on this coming week. All the best to our representatives in Infants and the School Band. Year 11 Reports are in the final stages of collation and will be distributed this week. Kindergarten to Year 10 reports are now in the early stages of composition and will be collated and circulated by the end of Term 2. Thank you, yet again, to the band of parents who invested a considerable chunk of their weekend pressing further towards completion of the Infants Stage area in the south eastern corner of the playground.
“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” (Luke 22:19)

Dates for the Calendar Confirmation-Saturday June 23rd 6pm World Environment Day- Tuesday 5th June ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the theme for World Environment Day 2018, implores us to think about the choices we make each and everyday around our use of plastics. It urges us to act, ‘If you can’t reuse it, refuse it’. Living God, You reveal your great love through the beauty of Nature. Help us to love and respect our world. May we be ‘seeds’ for growth, raising awareness of the Sacred, and teaching all to see and treasure your print in the gift of Creation. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen. Primary Spelling Bee On Thursday 31st May, Georgie Pearce (Year 3), Cohan Howden (Year 4), Kate Proctor (Year 5) and Natasha Smaluck (Year 6) travelled to Wellington to compete in the Diocesan Spelling Bee. These students represented our school beautifully with Natasha making it to Round 2 words, Georgie and Kate both making it to Round 5 words and Cohan reaching the round of unseen words. Congratulations! Thank you to those parents who transported and supported the students on the day. Diocesan Spelling Bee Four students from the secondary department, Ben Myers, Laura Casey-Price, Louis Carson and Ricky Shaji, attended the Diocesan Spelling Bee in Wellington last Wednesday. Each student competed well, with the Stage 5 competition actually lasting for fourteen rounds before a winner was found! Well done to the students for their enthusiastic participation. P.O. Yr11 Modern History Excursion: Last Friday, Yr11 Modern History travelled to Canberra to spend the day investigating historical sources displayed within the Australian War Memorial. Being such a small group of senior students enabled the class to engage with the materials on a level not available to larger classes. Our day ended with a sombre search for relatives along the Wall of Remembrance, where we each placed poppies to honour the service and sacrifice of those who never made it home. On a personal note, I would like thank Hayley, Brianna and Jordan for the mature and respectful manner in which they conducted themselves throughout the day. They were an absolute pleasure to take away and I'm proud to be associated with students of their calibre. Mr Lette Class Teacher Peer Support This week the focus is on step 2 of the model, Plan. In Peer Support children learn the need to develop a range of coping strategies and be creative in drawing on these when planning responses. Responses include persevering, seeing the positive side to situations and engaging in activities they enjoy as a distraction for a short time. Encourage your child to talk with you about strategies they could use as difficulties arise. Book Club Book club is due back Friday the 8th.
Primary Netball On Wednesday 30th May, our Stage 2 and 3 netball teams competed in the Netball NSW Schools Cup in Cowra. Our Stage 2 team participated in a gala day, competing against Mulyan Public School, Holmwood Public School and Orange Anglican Grammar School, winning 2 of their 3 games. Our Stage 3 team played 4 games against Cowra Public School, Orange Anglican Grammar School, Mulyan Public School and Canowindra Public School, finishing with 3 wins and a draw. This means they now go on to the regional finals in Orange in early August. Thank you to the large number of parents who assisted and supported our girls on the day. The girls played with excellent sportsmanship and were fantastic representatives for our school. Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au

still think it is the start of the year and you will start thinking about them later? Some questions to think about. Dr Justin Coulson is a parenting expert and leader in positive psychology and wellbeing. He is married with 6 children, yes 6 and is delivering a presentation at Mackillop College, Bathurst. The night is aimed at year 12 and their parents but if you are a parent of a year 11 student and are interested in attending please email me directly as you have to register for the event. The night begins at 6.30 and will conclude at 8.30pm. It is titled “How to make year 12 the best year ever” so be aware that the night will focus solely on this list last year of schooling. Email: s.carroll@bth.catholic.edu.au In local news, Matt Mallon was awarded a trophy made from the match ball he used to bowl a hat trick. A feat that is not easily achieved. Mr Statham, who also happens to be Matt’s cricket coach organised the trophy and awarded him with this award at our assembly. Mr Lowe also spoke at assembly about his year 12 construction class that attended the World Skills Games. Our three students finished first, second and third. Congratulations boys!
