St Raphael’s Catholic School Term2, Week 6/B Newsletter 25 May 2015

Congratulations to all those who generously enabled the Secondary Student Social to be such a success last week. The Beauties and Geeks were spectacular in all their regalia. Dear Parents Professional learning doesn’t necessarily sound exciting yet it is crucially important. We expect our doctors and health workers to be up with the latest treatments; our mechanics need to be up to date with innovations in the latest vehicle models and we rightly expect our computer technicians to handle current issues in hardware, software and network developments. Equally and, I would argue, more importantly teachers must keep their knowledge and skills honed and current. At St Raphael’s we enjoy the privilege of having an extraordinary percentage of staff members holding post-graduate university qualifications. Additionally, numerous staff members are currently undertaking further university studies and will boost that percentage even higher. Professional organizations provide access to research, people and resources of the highest quality. The investment we make at St Raphael’s in professional learning is very significant and sustained – as it should be in place of learning. Currently the bulk of the secondary department classrooms have had to be relocated to temporary accommodation for the rest of the year. This is to provide access for builders to the existing building which will be incorporated into the new facilities. This move now gives us a month to ensure the temporary accommodation and storage arrangements are functional before the actual handover has to occur. Mysterious garden folk achieve extraordinary results in the quiet of weekends and after school. Mulching of the big bank over the primary playground, for example, is complete and the vegetable gardens are completely planted out. That’s generosity, humility, loyalty and heroism wrapped together. Thank you for your generous support of our “Red Day” during which we raised funds for the great work of the Salvos. P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
Best wishes to the CWA Public Speaking representatives from the Primary and Secondary Departments competing at Orange this week. I publicly pay tribute to all staff members and to parents who have contributed to these wonderful achievements because the events are characteristically well-orchestrated and that only results from tremendous co-operation and a sprinkle of constructive tension.

Be More: Just As Catholics we are called to Be Just – to be aware of the impact our words and actions have on others; even people we may never meet. We are called to think about the choices we make about what we buy, how we live, how much we use and how we treat others. The call to Be Just is a call to integrity. It is a call to make sure that our actions are a true reflection of what we proclaim. God of justice and mercy, You hear the cries of the poor and you weep for those who suffer injustice. Wake us from indifference. Open our eyes to those around us. Rouse within us our knowledge of what is right. Transform our hearts so that we may transform your world. We make this prayer through your son, Jesus, our model of justice. Amen Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au

Year Three and Four Chess Knockout has been completed with all of the games being very competitive. Logan Haslam was our eventual winner after a final round robin between the last three players; Scarlett Shepherd was second and Louis Johnson third. A wonderful round of games that were hard fought. It is great to see the many students playing chess each Wednesday at lunchtime and it looks like we will have a large group of competitive players for senior school!! K.Skinner Librarian

The second of Six PLC Characteristics 2. Collaborative teams focused on learning: Educators work together in collaborative teams to achieve common goals for which they are mutually accountable. School structure ensures teams have the time and support for adult learning. Update of Emergency Contact Details & Collection of Parent Emails. It is important that parent / guardian emergency contact details are as up to date as possible. To help facilitate this process, parents / guardians are requested to update phone details via the school’s parent / teacher booking website: https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the event code: MMJRU Please then select your child’s homeroom teacher. Please note that by updating your details in this manner, you will also be providing the school with your email address. We are seeking to gather email addresses of parents and guardians for two purposes. Firstly, to facilitate the electronic notification of your child’s absence from school (as we upgrade to electronic roll software over 2015) and secondly, to explore the possibility of the weekly school newsletter being supplied to families in an electronic form. Your email address will remain confidential and will not be utilised for any other function by the school, nor forwarded to any third party. Should you for any reason not wish to provide the school with your email, you are still requested to ensure phone emergency contacts are up to date. If your details have changed since your child’s enrolment, please notify the office in writing. Mr David Lette - Administration Coordinator
