St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 2, Week 6/B Newsletter 29 May 2017 Year 11 Reports are in the final stages of collation and will be distributed this week.

Dear Parents, The pace of the first half of this term has been far from reflective. Many events have been packed into a small period. I publicly pay tribute to all staff members and to the many parents who have contributed to these wonderful achievements because the events are characteristically well-orchestrated and that only results from tremendous co-operation and a sprinkle of constructive tension. Over $440 was contributed by students, staff and families on Friday to the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal. Thank for your generosity as we support the fine work of our Salvos.

Eisteddfod Dance events, Primary and Secondary are on this coming week. All the best to our representative dancers. Year 11 students hosted a formal dinner for Year 12 students, their parents and teachers. Establishing this lovely tradition is an important element of the personalised care and support of our HSC candidates. Guests enjoyed a three course meal and address by Miss Marlee Langfield, Young Farming Champions representative in the school’s Archibull Project 2017.

Spelling representatives from Primary and Secondary are travelling to Wellington to compete on Wednesday (Sec) and Thursday (Prim). Travel safely and compete strongly. A reminder to all the dads that there’s a Men’s Mass & Breakfast here on June 3 – a great way to connect, pray and share a very good meal to start a weekend. “Go the mighty Blues”

Michael Gallagher Principal

“I would like to ask all those who have positions of responsibility in economic, political and social life, and all men and women of goodwill: let us be ‘protectors’ of creation, protectors of God’s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment.” Pope Francis, Homily at Inauguration, 2013

How do I show respect for Creation? The earth and all life on it are part of God’s creation. We are called to respect this gift. We are responsible for taking care of the world we live in and for sharing all the wonders and resources the earth gives us.

What is the Archibull Prize? The Archibull Prize is a world renowned program with curriculum-linked teaching resources which explore the role agriculture plays in the health, wealth and happiness of Australians and many other people around the world.

Friday 2 Primary Assembly at 2:00pm.

Only 30 schools in Eastern Australia have qualified for this year’s Archibull and St Raphael’s has the honour of representing our area in the competition. The 2017 competition theme ‘Feeding, Clothing and Powering a Hungry Nation’ encourages students and teachers to address one of the greatest challenges to Australian agriculture – climate change, food and fashion waste, declining natural resources and biosecurity. The program design also invites the students to be part of the solution by sharing their ideas on how to tackle these challenges as individuals, as a community and as the mums and dads of the next generation.

RE Information Last Friday night our Year 12 students along with their parents, celebrated Mass in the chapel and then shared a meal together in the MSLC. Year 11 students planned the night and the Hospitality students prepared the meal. In keeping with our Catholic values and being good stewards of this Earth we live on, the students utilised herbs from our school gardens and sourced local produce as much as possible. Cowra lamb featured on the menu. Minimising our carbon footprint as much as possible was important part of the planning. We thank Alison and the primary gardeners for providing us with the opportunity to harvest beautiful fresh herbs from the school garden. We should all be keeping in mind ways to minimise our carbon footprints.

Put simply, the Archibull Prize brings the farm into the classroom. Special thanks to Mrs Date for her energy, enthusiasm and passion for this project - she has the whole school excited about Archie.

ST RAPHAEL’S - WHERE IT’S ALL HAPPENING So much exciting learning is taking place at St Raphael’s, it’s hard to know where to begin. St Raphael’s Secondary students have embarked on Archibull2017. Our fiberglass cow has arrived and we are starting the planning process. We are one of 30 schools across NSW, ACT and QLD to participate. Our 2017 theme is: FEEDING, CLOTHING AND POWERING A HUNGRY NATION IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY. It is a cross-curricular project that partners schools with Young Farming Champions (YFC’s). We have been partnered with YFC’s Ms Marlee Langfield and Dr Stephanie Fowler. Consequently, our focus will be mixed farming.

Selected students work in teams in a Project Based Learning environment to study the shared responsibility of local, national and global issues of climate change, biosecurity, creating healthy communities, fostering awareness of careers in agriculture and welcoming the Young Farming Champions into our school community. The outcome of this research is the creation and decorating of our own unique “Archibull”, the design and implementation of our “strapharchie17” blog, as well as integrating our STEM skills in the form of infographics/multimedia and animations. Our blog will document the focus of some of our KLA’s as we make new discoveries. It is a project that breathes life into our Catholic focus of “Laudato Si” – it is a shared responsibility to “Care for our Common Home”. Watch this space - we will keep you posted on our progress. “The Archie Team” 2017 Kindergarten Recycling Project As part of Kindergarten's Science and Technology unit, Kindergarten will be designing and creating a shelter for a specific animal. To do this we need your help please. Kindergarten would love any of your unwanted cardboard boxes of all shapes and sizes. Please send them into school for our collection at the front office. Peer Support K-6 Session 3 - Including others Our session this week in Stronger Together - our Peer Support module for our students, considers the relationships that students develop and how they can change over time. It looks at the role they play in contributing to these relationships and how the use of power, trust and honesty can change a relationship. Parents of participating students might like to talk about the different relationships that you have or their relationships with family and other friends outside school.

PASTORAL CARE AND STUDENT WELLBEING Good physical health is essential for overall wellbeing as well as being important for learning and concentration. “Young people have lots of demands on their time, so they can find it hard to be active. But physical activity keeps teenage bodies and minds fit and healthy – and during adolescence, your child needs at least 60 minutes of activity every day. Why physical activity is important for pre-teen and teenage children Being active is an important part of your child’s daily routine. It’s a great way to spend time with friends, meet new people, feel good and break up long stretches of sitting and studying. Being active every day can help:  improve heart health and fitness  develop strong muscles, bones and good posture  maintain a healthy weight Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au

 improve concentration and memory  learn new skills  increase self-confidence  reduce stress  make and keep friendships  improve sleep. Not getting enough physical activity can put your child at risk of overweight and obesity, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression and type-2 diabetes. Best kinds of physical activity Physical activity done at a moderate or vigorous level is good for your child’s health. Moderate activities generally make your child ‘huff and puff’ a little bit. These could include brisk walking, dancing, bike riding, swimming laps of a pool and jogging. Even helping out with some of the more active chores inside and outside your home can be good. Vigorous activities increase your child’s heart rate and make him ‘huff and puff’ even more. Vigorous activities can happen in any game with lots of running – for example, formal activities like basketball, or less formal activities like chasey. They can also be running or jogging, or sports like soccer, hockey, swimming and football. Your child can get ‘huffing and puffing’ in lots of different ways – anything from organised sport to active transport and unplanned activities will do! Getting enough physical activity Australian guidelines recommend children aged 5-18 years have at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. For many young people, this physical activity doesn’t just happen – it needs to be planned.” From the Centre for Adolescent Health Students are encouraged to be active in break times and to involve themselves in PDHPE practical classes. Making the most of every opportunity to be physically active will have our students well on the way to healthy minds as well as bodies, Ms Sue Whiteley Pastoral Care and Student Wellbeing
