St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 2, Week 7/B Newsletter 9th June 2014 worked together on the production of this significant community event.
Dear Parents
Michael Gallagher Principal
Preparation of Semester 1 Reports is well underway in both Primary and Secondary Departments. Reflecting on the progress of individual children is a most rewarding task. I expect that you will find ways to celebrate the achievements of your children as they prepare to negotiate the next set of learning challenges. Eisteddfod participation by our children across an array of competitive sections has drawn to a close. I pay tribute to everyone who performed in some manner because, if ever there was an illustration of the iceberg principle, it is in performance. Untold hours of refining is invested in only minutes of performance – to have performed at all is a massive win in itself. Six staff members are away today undertaking further coaching in the workings of our Professional Learning Community (PLC). Tomorrow we welcome Ms Tonia Flannigan to St Raph’s as she conducts the first on-site coaching session with members of the school leadership team. One of the most important moral issues of our time is how we think about and what we do about asylum seekers and refugees. Dr Phil Glendenning, President of the Refugee Council of Australia and Director of the Edmund Rice Centre will be here at school to break open this issue with us. The session tomorrow evening has had to be postponed due to Phil’s illness then he has some speaking engagements in Europe. Our date will be announced once we renegotiate one that suits us all. On Friday evening debs will be presented at the annual Catholic Debutante Ball. Again I pay tribute to the debs and their partners for the effort invested for that evening, but additionally I pay tribute to their parents and to the event organizers who have P.O. Vinnies Winter Sleepout Every night, one in 200 people in Australia have no place to call home. They are not all sleeping rough on the streets. Some move between the houses of friends or relatives, others find temporary places in shelters run by churches and charities. Some are single, others have partners or children. Some are old, others are only teenagers. There are slightly more men than women among them. But they are all homeless, and to most people they are invisible. Homelessness is not a problem many people have to think about until they are at risk of becoming homeless themselves. This year a large group of our year 10 students and teachers will be participating in the Vinnies Winter School Sleepout. Our aim is to raise public awareness about homelessness and to raise money to help Vinnies continue to do the valuable work they do in this area. This is not just a problem in big cities. We have homeless people in Cowra. We ask that you seriously consider supporting us in this venture by donating to the cause. You can visit the following website to donate or send a donation into school in an envelope with 'Vinnies Sleepout' on the front. http://nswvinniesschoolsleepout.gofundraise.com.au/p age/BischofP

Year One and Year Two Just a friendly reminder that the deposit of $25 for the Excursion to Katoomba is due Friday, 13th June. Kindergarten and Year 2 Thank you Fireman Mal and Fireman Derek - our friendly firemen who came to visit us last week. The children enjoyed finding out about ringing 000, shouting 'Fire! Fire! Fire!, 'Drop down low and go, go ,go' and 'Stop, drop and roll.' Seeing Fireman Mal dress up in his safety gear helped the children not to be scared of a fireman arriving to put a fire out. The most exciting part was having a turn of holding the hose and putting the pretend fire out. Great fun was had by all and important lessons learnt.
