St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 2, Week 9/B Newsletter 23rd June 2014

Dear Parents May those children who received the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time on Saturday be blessed and constantly renourished throughout their life. The Eucharist is a strengthening Sacrament that boosts us more every time we participate. As second term nears closure and the children show signs of being frazzled we can look back over a term of wonderful achievements and feel deservedly proud. Thank you for the support you give so generously to our St Raph’s family. Reports will be sent out at this week. I expect that it will be a time of recognition and celebration of the wonderful growth that has occurred during the first semester. Officially NAIDOC week occurs in coming weeks through the holiday. We will be celebrating this important event tomorrow with an array of activities designed to engage, challenge and stimulate our children. Classes will run as usual until 10:30am followed by Mass at the church at 11:00 and special activities from noon. Other extras this week include the Stage 5 “Paddock to Plate” excursion, the secondary social (Heroes & Villains), Stage 2&3 Rugby League finals and the Infants parent meeting focusing on reading fluency and the resulting restructure of homework. May every member of our school family enjoy a safe and refreshing holiday. Term 3 starts for students and staff on Monday July 14th.

Vinnie School Sleepout “To serve is beautiful, but only if it is done with joy and a whole heart and a free mind.” Pearl S. Buck This was certainly the case on Friday night when 16 of our Year Ten students and 8 teachers volunteered to spend the night sleeping out to support the valuable work of St Vincent De Paul. The joy of doing something for others was very evident in these young people as they braved the elements and spent the night sleeping rough. All involved saw the "Vinnies School Sleepout" as a great opportunity to get a reality check about how lucky we are and to do something positive to change the situation around homelessness in Australia. Participation in the event was two-fold: raising awareness of the homeless situation in Australia and raising money for St Vincent d Paul. One of the things learnt, was that homelessness affects people right here in Cowra. Our local St Vincent de Paul pointed out that they will be well supported by any money raised and were grateful for our participation in this event.

"We Christians are called to confront the poverty of our brothers and sisters, to touch it, to make it our own and to take practical steps to alleviate it,” Pope Francis Our young people certainly did this on Friday night. In a very practical way they demonstrated real witness to our Gospel call, to love one another as Jesus loves us. The participants were: Students: Maddison Johnson, Hannah Chamberlain, Josie Lynch, Magdelize Van Eeden, Renae Grech, Celine Langlands, Jessica Napoli, Kelly Price, Isabella Hines, Meg Ellison, Nathan Stead, Lanty Ryan, Harry Waters, Sam Gallagher, Julian Garling, David Mood. Teachers: Karla Slaven, Michael Gallagher, Kylie McNamara, Peta Bischof, Jenny White, Renae Downes, Danielle Gibbs, Steve Thomas. Thank you to those who have donated and shown your support for these young people. If you would like to financially support this cause, just go to the following website and follow the directions. http://nswvinniesschoolsleepout.gofundraise.com.au/p age/BischofP P.O. The potential rain didn't scare us, Year 10 of St Raphael’s were ready to go. Sleeping bags packed and cardboard at the ready we were fully prepared to participate in the 2014 Vinnies School sleep out. The sleeping arrangements were simple - girls to the left, boys to the right, cardboard, sleeping bag and many layers of clothing. Some us even got creative and established forts to sleep in. The cold winter air was officially settling in for the night and as several of the teachers sung around the bonfire and told ghost stories the rest of us were off to bed - a cold nights sleep. Luckily none of us awoke with frostbite and we were all present in the morning (well Mr Thomas had disappeared but still..) All in all the Vinnies Winter Sleepout was an eye opener for many of us and I personally really enjoyed the experience. I was really proud of all of our efforts to raise just over 4,000 dollars :) Thank you to Mrs Bischof for organising it and to everyone who sponsored us. Maddison Johnson
