St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 2, Week 9/A Newsletter 15 June 2015
Dear Parents Bishop Michael McKenna visited on the weekend to discuss with parishioners the proposed change of Parish boundaries and the implications. The boundary of St Raphael’s Parish is to encompass Wyangala, Woodstock, Cowra, Gooloogong, Canowindra and Eugowra. Governance of such a large parish with so many Eucharistic Communities is a challenge that has been unofficially in place now for two years. Stage 6 (Year 11/12) course selection interviews will be held this Friday and Saturday to ensure maximum certainty for students and families about courses. Building-wise, we are close to the appointment of a construction company and therefore the commencement of the building. The Combined Catholic Primary Schools gathered Friday of last week for competition. Results will be they officially arrive.

Be More: Challenged As Catholics we are called to Be Challenged; to be uncomfortable; to be unsettled by the injustice that continues in our world. Most of us live relatively comfortable lives. The poverty; the hunger; the violence of the world doesn’t impact directly on most of us. Today’s prayer calls on us to step out of those comfortable lives and to be challenged; to be confronted by what millions of people have to deal with. God of disquiet and unrest, To confront the world and call your people back to your love, you sent your Son into their lives. Send your Holy Spirit to move in this world again and confront us with the truth of injustice. Give us the strength and resilience to face what we would rather ignore; to stand up for what we know to be right; to stand up against what we know to be wrong. We make this prayer through Jesus, the one who challenged the world. Amen.

We anticipate that the project will save money, reduce our school’s impact on the environment and help our students to develop positive habits and attitudes towards energy conservation. Please watch this space for our evaluation of the project at the end of Term 3, and consider using this article to start a conversation about energy conservation in your home. K-10 Assembly The K-10 Assembly for semester 1 will held in St Raphael's Catholic Church at 9.30am on Friday 19 June 2015. Parents and caregivers of award recipients have been notified. Year 8 Green Science Year 8 Green Science recently conducted an Energy Audit of St Raphael’s Catholic School. Each student in the class took on specialised roles including: journalism, photography, research, communication, technology, promotion and many more. As a class, we used Google Cloud technology to work collaboratively on our data collection, processing, research and proposal. The research team investigated the number and types of electric lights and heaters in use throughout the school, with a total of 415 fluorescent tubes and 21 electric heaters. A small group of students used information from a current electricity bill and a combination of first-hand and secondary data to calculate a combined hourly cost of running these appliances of $51.03. As a class, we discussed the environmental impact of electricity production. Student research identified that 86% of Australia’s electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, contributing to Australia’s 1.8% of total global greenhouse gas emissions which cause global warming. Year 8 Green Science proposed an ‘Earth Hour’ action across the school. We asked that ALL classrooms and offices turn off the electric lights and heaters during Period 6 for secondary and after lunch for primary every Friday afternoon according to the teacher’s professional judgement. The project proposal, with the unanimous support of the school executive, has been presented to the secondary assembly and in the primary classrooms. Classes have been asked to track P.O. Sports Uniform Year 5 and 6 Year 5 and 6 will be wearing sports uniform this Wednesday for Physical Activity. They will still wear sports uniform for normal Sport on Thursday. David Peachey Shield Ten muscle-bound Year 5 and 6 boys headed to Bathurst to compete in the annual David Peachey Gala Day. After being unable to participate in our own Gala Day in Cowra due to players having prior commitments, we headed to the much bigger Bathurst Gala Day where we were placed in one of four pools. We played three round matches against St. Mary's Orange, Bathurst West P.S. and Raglan P.S. The boys played extremely well, with team-work and support of one another in both attack and defence a stand-out on the day. St. Raphael's came out on top from their three matches, winning all quite well. Hugo 'Hopoate' Skene was elusive and speedy. Kelsey 'Norman' Pollard was unstoppable with the ball in hand. Noah 'Watmough' Keen was dogged in defence. Mitchell 'Wicks' Amos ran hard and straight. Bill 'Mannah' Statham led the team well. Alex 'Pauli' Brown barged over the top of hapless defenders. Riley 'Takarangi' Langfield was dominant in defence. Harry 'Sandow' Thuaux was great at halfback. Jackson 'Peats' McLeish provided good ball from dummy half. Sam 'Robinson' Kelly made many strong tackles. This brought us to the semi-final where we had made it through to the final four. Our opposition was Holy Family Bathurst. A number of spectators commented that it was a pity that these two teams didn't get to meet in the grand final as they were the two strongest teams there that day, according to many. We scored first and were on a roll. Some decisions didn't quite go our way and fatigue was setting in. Holy Family crossed the line for two tries and there the scoring finished. We had fought hard but went down by two tries to one. The boys should hold their heads high with a performance like they displayed on the day. Thank you to the many parents who transported and cheered us on. Cross Country Last Friday four students from across the school travelled to Eastern Creek to represent the Bathurst Diocese at the Polding Cross Country Carnival. Congratulations to Phoebe Smith, Eoghan Killick, Mikelli Garratt and Anna McNamara for their outstanding effort at Polding level. Chess - Week 10 The third game of the NSW JCL Chess competition will see St. Raphael's Catholic School Cowra take on Trundle Central School at Trundle. This will be held on nd Monday 22 June. The Raph’s Team must keep winning to continue. Our players are Tom Statham, Ben Statham, Mitchell Beer, Riley Barron, Henry Sant and Lucas Pearce. We wish them all the best!!

School Access The western side of the school facing onto Lachlan Street will be occupied by builders and their equipment in the new term. Currently, hazard tape is in place to mark out the playground area we will lose during the construction. Our new habits have to become accessing the playground via the Rose Garden gate. So student pick-up as well as movement to/from St Raphael’s hall and sporting fields will have to be through the Rose Garden. P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
