St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 10/B Newsletter 18 September 2017 Congratulations and thank you for a great term. Rest well in preparation for the challenging term ahead. Dear Parents, Congratulations to the children and their families who received the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time on Saturday evening. That event is most significant in the Faith life of us all.

Michael Gallagher Principal

The graduation of our first HSC cohort will occur on Thursday of this week. Year 12 Awards will be presented at the Graduation Assembly followed by morning tea with Year 12, parents and staff members. In the evening is the Graduation Mass followed by the Graduation Dinner. We embrace and celebrate an achievement for our entire school that has been more than thirty years in the making. We’re proud and excited about this coming of age. Kindy Start began last week and the 2030 HSC Cohort began their “big school” journey. Five more carefully planned sessions will enable teachers to observe and assess the skills of these lovely young people. These observations assist enormously in tailoring learning experiences that address individual learning needs. It is a delight to see the children engaging so enthusiastically and utterly unaware of the learning agenda of teachers and parents. Appointments are now open for Secondary Parent / Teacher discussions which are being held on Thursday in Week 1 of next term. If you are unable to attend as planned, please contact the school office and another time can be negotiated for your discussion and remember to clear your appointment time on the school website – others may wish to take up that appointment.

Matthew 18: 21-35 Forgiveness Just as we are forgiven by the father, so too should we forgive others. Forgiveness allows us to restore broken relationships and let go of resentment. Forgiveness frees us to love and live joyfully.

should wear appropriate mufti as there will be activities and games for all. On Thursday the Graduation Assembly will be held in St Raphael’s Church, beginning at 10.30 a.m. All students are expected to be in full winter school uniform for this special, formal school occasion. Non-compliance will result in a phone call home as there will be no supervision available for students who “forget”. There will be no Canteen for Recess on Thursday, so please bring your own. Lunch will be available as normal. Please remember to order your lunch. Stage One Excursion Thursday 19th October is fast approaching and marks the Stage One excursion to Canberra. We had many parents volunteer to accompany us on the day surprisingly! Let it be known that they were warned! The 'Winning' parent volunteers drawn out were : Mr. Tydd (1 Gold - Sam); Mrs. Allan (1 Green - Will); Mr. Pullen (2 Green - Jake) and Mr. Rush (2 Gold - Sara). A note about clothing, times, etc will be sent out in Week One with all of the information that every parent will require. Rest up during the holidays as Term 4 is a massive one. Kindy Start The newest members of the St Raphael's family came for their very first 'Kindy Start' session this week. We spent some time talking about what it's like to be at 'BIG' school and then made some very happy clowns. It was a great chance for our Kindy teachers to see how clever we are with cutting, colouring and gluing. This week at Kindy Start, we are visiting the library where we will meet Mrs Skinner, our librarian, and listen to some stories. It will be lots of fun! A reminder to Kindy Start families that Mrs Ryan will be taking orders for paint smocks and library bags this Thursday (great for the Christmas stocking!)

CHANGES TO SCHOOL ROUTINE IN WEEK 10 The school is celebrating Year 12 Graduation in Week 10 and there are some special events which involve all students. Some uniform changes are required. Primary Athletics News Ky Garratt traveled to the Hunter Sports Centre up Newcastle way recently for the next leg of his Athletics journey. Competing in the Discus event, Ky achieved another P.B. of 32.12m. How awesome is that? Well done 'Muscles!' Ky heads off next to Homebush in October. Keep training and good luck.

Highlights of the term include our triumphant win with our cabbage at the Woodstock Memorial Show and more recently the filling of the newly completed Kindergarten bed. The soil was delivered last week, eager kindergarten students watched the tipper fill the bed and many hands assisted with the overflow of soil. This week should see the transplanting of some precious strawberry plants. We might even have room for a basil or two! Our permanent chookyard is near completion and should be operational and fully functional by Term 4, if any parents or friends would be interested in purchasing a second hand chook tractor please contact us, we would love it to go to a good home. Earn and Learn Reminder Thank you all for your support of our school in the Earn and Learn Promotion. A reminder that next Tuesday will be the last day to collect Earn and Learn stickers. Please return all sticker sheets (whether complete or not) and loose stickers to school by no later than Friday morning so our final sticker count can take place. St Raphs Award Winning Garden Students involvement in the garden is entirely voluntary, some faces are regulars whilst others come and go. The inclusion of the productive food garden within the playground offers students a hands on experimental learning opportunity. Because it takes the education of children outside the classroom and into the environment it breaks down the barrier that exists between ‘school education’ and ‘real life experiences’. This then opens the door for that learning to involve children’s families. It also allows the children to take that learning experience home to their families.

This term in the garden we have filled the beds with seedlings, a great assortment peas, rocket, chinese cabbages, broccoli, and cauliflowers. Older seedlings continue to thrive onions, cabbages, beetroot and celery. We have spent a great deal of time watering and mulching, uncanny being winter and all.
