St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 10/B Newsletter 19 September 2016 to wear summer uniforms – including school hats. Congratulations and thank you for a great term. Rest well in preparation for the challenging term ahead. Dear Parents While the events of the weekend of the Official Opening of the Mother Scholastica Learning Centre were stunning in their scale and quality, it was the investment of so much by so many for so long that is the real feature. The Stage 6 project has been about people and their buy-in much more than bricks and mortar. That our first Year 11 has come to completion already is a reminder of how much has been achieved on the learning front in such a short time. The vastness of what we have undertaken is more real to us now as is our task to continue sowing the seeds for the future. The Cowra Show multidimensional display was a delight and drew a tremendous number of compliments. Additionally, the Back to Cowra Reunion enabled an unexpectedly large number of families of former students and staff members to revisit their old school. Bishop Michael McKenna will be visiting us tomorrow for lunch, a Year 6 visit and tour of the newly opened facilities. Unfortunately the Bishop was unable to attend on the weekend because of Confirmation obligations in other parishes. Kindy Start began last week and the 2029 HSC Cohort began their “big school” journey. Five more carefully planned sessions will enable teachers to observe and assess the skills of these lovely young people. These observations assist enormously in tailoring learning experiences that address individual learning needs. It is a delight to see the children engaging so enthusiastically and utterly unaware of the learning agenda of teachers and parents. Appointments are now open for Parent / Teacher discussions which are being held in week 1 of next term. If you are unable to attend as planned, please contact the school office and another time can be negotiated for your discussion and remember to clear your appointment time on the school website – others may wish to take up that appointment. The Parents and Friends Association has its monthly meeting for September tonight at 7pm. All parents and all friends are warmly invited to attend. As this is the last Newsletter of the term I wish you all happy, safe and refreshing holidays. School resumes th for all on Tuesday, October 11 when we will be able P.O. Poverty Pope Francis

“It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty” From The Catholic Education Office: Recently a parent satisfaction survey was released online for families, a decision was made that for the purpose of this framework and as a follow up from that survey we would offer families the chance to be involved in small focus groups. We would like to conduct these during October. We would ideally like to include around 5 to 8 people in each of the groups. We would come to the school to run them and focus on only a few questions. It should take approximately 1 hour and we would be asking them to consider the following questions. 1. Was pastoral care a consideration in choosing a Catholic Education for your child/children? 2. When we say ‘pastoral care’ what does that mean to you? What sort of practices make good pastoral care? 3. How can families and schools work in partnership in support of students’ wellbeing and pastoral care? Once we have an idea of the level of interest from families to be part of the conversation we will be able to plan some dates and settings. Please notify the school to

PASTORAL CARE/WELLBEING As we near the end of Term 3 we have much to be grateful for. Our school is flourishing; students and staff have worked hard in all curriculum areas; the new facilities are being appreciated by everyone; and in Term 4 we expect excellence in all aspects of school life – everyone contributing and working towards their best. In schools, as in all communities and groups, upsets and disappointments can occur. At St Raphael’s we aim to focus on positive and respectful relationships. When these break down for whatever reason, repair needs to take place. Students are expected to speak respectfully to each other and to staff members: good manners will get you everywhere. Showing respect for our environment is another challenge for us all. In Term 4 one of our targeted areas will be the school environment, both inside and outside. Students will be required to take care of the facilities we have and develop an appreciation and responsibility for the land and building spaces. Being good global citizens can begin right here. Sue Whiteley (Pastoral Care) NOTICE OF LIBRARY EVENT – Save the Date BOOK FAIR 2016: Week 2 Term 4: Our annual book th fair will commence on Tuesday 18 October. What is a Scholastic Book Fair? A mobile bookshop will be available at our school from th st Tuesday 17 October to Friday 21 October. Our Scholastic Book Fair is a fun event that enables children, parents, teachers and community members to purchase quality books and classroom materials at reasonable prices, while earning free books for your school. Students will be able to view books during library lessons and make a “wish list of books they would like to possibly purchase. Kerri Skinner Librarian Stage One Excursion Just a reminder to all Year One and Two parents that the excursion to Katoomba is being held in Week One of next term on Thursday 13th October. Payments need to be finalised this week please. If you are unsure of how much is still owed, please contact the front office.

CCC Athletics Congratulations to John Terry who participated in the CCC Athletics Carnival in Sydney last week. Not only did he get a new PB of 195cm in high jump, but it was enough to secure him the gold medal for the event. Well done John – fantastic effort! Good luck for the next level.

Representative Footy in New Zealand Year 7 boys, Mitchell Amos and Bill Statham are off to New Zealand later this week. The boys are part of the Group Ten Rugby League Under 13s team that will play three matches against strong New Zealand Maori representative teams. Congratulations boys on your achievements so far and best wishes for your overseas tour.

Thank you The hospitality class would like to thank Alison Rutledge and the primary gardeners for allowing them access to produce from their gardens. When preparing food for the School Opening events, they utilised: Celery, beetroot, spinach, spring onion, broccoli, sage, thyme and parsley. It was great to have such fresh produce so readily available. School Zones A reminder to all our parents ahead of the break at the end of Term 3 that school zones remain in place for the safety of our children and families. School zones operate on all gazetted schools days, which are all days the school is open, even pupil free days. For most NSW Catholic schools, school zones operate as normal until (and include) Friday, 23 September 2016 and resume on Monday 10 October 2016, whether students are present or not. Congratulations Well done to William Norton who had the winning design for the Cowra Tourism school competition for designing a cash Card for Cowra. Will’s winning entry netted him a fabulous $50 gift card of his own. St Raphael’s Productive Food Garden Spring had arrived and our garden has turned to a lush green. The productive food garden has begun to flourish. All Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au

garden beds are in full production, with some winter produce harvested and some yet to harvest. With the arrival of spring the show season has commenced. Shows promote lots of different aspects of our district. Horticulture and agriculture two strong industries surrounding Cowra are exemplified at local shows. The productive food garden has chosen to showcase some of its produce at recent shows with great success. In early September cauliflower, broccoli, beetroot, swede and beetroot relish stole the stage at Woodstock Memorial Show, with St Raphael’s Catholic School named overall champion in the produce section. More recently at Cowra Show, rhubarb, and pumpkin and beetroot relish trumped their sections. Prize monies awarded will return to the garden to continue its self-sufficiency. The garden has self-maintained itself through the winter with little watering or weeding required. Students have fertilised plants with seasol and worm juice on regular occasions and applied mulching pellets in anticipation of warmer weather. Mentoring by older students in the garden is common place. It is rewarding to observe children engage in self-worth and renewal.

Two new feathered friends have taken up occupancy in the chook tractor, isa browns......we look forward to prolific egg production.

As winter produce: broccoli, spinach, cabbage, rocket, carrots, leeks, spring onions are harvested in coming weeks, the garden will be planted with summer vegetables. Mrs Cranney has discovered some really interesting strawberry varieties; bubblegum and pineapple. Kindergarten students will be planting these this week in mobile beds, an interesting taste sensation to come. Our food forest trees have settled in to their new location and are beginning to blossom. The wet winter has been perfect for the trees to take root in preparation for summer.
