St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 2/B Newsletter 24 July 2017
Dear Parents Cultural Competency is the course that all members of staff are undertaking and it began with the pupil free day last Monday. The focus is on indigenous history and culture and has already been enormously informative. The course continues throughout Term 3. Awards for Years of Service to Catholic Schooling were distributed at a major diocesan gathering last Tuesday. Five staff members from St Raphael’s received recognition for the work and wisdom they have invested. Congratulations to Mrs Alison Downes 25 years, Mrs Therese Johnston 25 years, Mrs Nicole Twohill-Scott 25 years, Mrs Sue Whiteley 35 years and Mrs Jenny White 40 years. Two extra curricula projects commence this week for the term - CSYMA (Catholic Schools Youth Ministries Australia) & SES Cadets. These activities target mainly Stage 5 students, many of whom have jumped at the chances. Thank you to Mrs Kat Allan, Mrs Peta Bischof and Mr David Lette who enable these opportunities to happen.
Secondary elective courses are up for re-selection. So parents and students of both Year 8 and 9 will be guided through the process of elective course selection. Each student will study three courses from the range offered. Kindy Start is a chance we offer, later in Term 3 and into Term 4, for parents and children to have a very close look at the offerings of “big school” and to determine readiness for kindergarten. If you want to be included in our communications please notify Genevieve at the front office. Year 11 Courses for next year are virtually finalised and patterns of study letters will be circulated in the near future. Thank you for your full and timely participation in these decision-making processes. The decisions made are important and should not be rushed, so our early action in these matters actually gives us all the time we need to invest in the process.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed
Lovely feedback was received from presenters and hosts from the Year 5 Excursion to Parkes. That people recognise such enthusiasm and engagement and go to the trouble of making contact is a wonderful compliment to the students, their families and the school. Thank you Year 5 and congratulations. This week a number of families in the secondary department are hosting visiting Japanese students from Thursday until Monday. Thank you for such generosity and Aussie hospitality. This coming weekend is set aside for enrolment in the course leading up to receiving the Eucharist. Attendance at the 6pm Saturday Mass or the 8am Sunday Mass at St Raphael’s will be the time to collect enrolment packages and “get the ball rolling” Tonight the P&F Association meets in the staff room at 7pm for the first of three Term 3 meetings. All parents and friends of the school are warmly welcomed. At various times throughout the term Stage 3 students will use secondary learning facilities as has become the normal practice. They will familiarise themselves with the workings of the secondary department and smooth the transition for next year. P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
We really should not be surprised how a tiny seed like the mustard seed can grow up into a big tree and offer shade and support for birds of all kinds. It does take a number of years, however, for the seed to become a tree. Not until we apply Jesus’ words to our life in Christ will we likewise have an impact. It takes many years of applying the commandments of Christ to make this impact. But we should not be discouraged, we just need to persevere in our pursuit to build the Kingdom of Heaven. Think of today. What will you do to make a difference to the world around you? Will you say a kind word to someone who is sad? Will you help someone to do something difficult? Will you take care of the earth's resources by recycling something? Will you cheer up the people around you with your smile? Will those you meet today find that the world is a brighter place because of you? Dear God, Though we are so small and the world is so big, help us to make a difference to all whom we meet today. Amen.

Primary Well-Being Matters Correct winter uniform should be worn at all times including ties, black school shoes and maroon, black or tartan hair bands. A sports jacket can be worn over a school jumper for those colder days. The colder weather is well and truly upon us. Some students have been arriving to school without a jumper. Even if it is not cold, please send a jumper in a bag as the weather can turn very quickly. Scarves, beanies and gloves can be worn on the playground but not in the classroom. Please label all clothing. Please ensure students have adequate food for the day. Small pieces of fruit for fruit break in the morning, something healthy for recess and lunch. It is of concern that some students are not eating at meal times or appear to have misplaced their food. Please have a conversation at home as to what healthy foods your child likes to eat and how much they may need. Teachers will be monitoring this over the coming weeks. Mr Colemane - Primary Well-Being Coordinator Library News Welcome back everyone as we head into another hectic term of great reading. Thank you to all those who have returned books from last term. Could parents please check for the last few overdue books. Our Stage Tree Chess Knockout will commence in Week 3 so practice your moves and put down your name for the challenge. Book Parade: our annual parade will take please in Week 6. The theme of Book Week this year is Escape to Everywhere. For new parents this is a parade where students come to school dressed as a book character or book cover. Parents and the school watch as we parade as class groups during Book Week, when the 2017 Book of the Year winners are announced. I have encouraged students to start thinking about organising their outfits and to see me for any ideas. More details to come. MS Readathon: For students who wish to take part in the Ms Readathon our school has been registered. The MS Readathon continues to encourage people of all ages to read and improve their literacy while making a difference for people living with multiple sclerosis. Details are on the website https://www.msreadathon.org.au/ Happy Reading Kerri.Skinner – Librarian

Archibull News The team had a visit from Grain Growers MD Dr Michael Southan. Dr Southan talked to the students about the factors that are important in growing high quality grain to produce food. He discussed the importance of including grain in the daily diet for digestive health and to supply a range of important nutrients and vitamins. He conducted an experiment to show the students the properties of starch and gluten and involved the students in working with flour, producing a dough and learning about the differences between bread and biscuit flours and the diverse uses for wheat. His presentation was interactive and engaging. His pathway to a PhD in Agricultural Science was enlightening to the team as well. Many thanks to Mrs Alison Rutledge for organising the event.
