St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 4/B Newsletter 2015
Dear Parents This week the world commemorates the declaration of World War 1 and they remember the sacrifice and courage, the waste and destruction that resulted. Additionally, the anniversaries of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War 2 also fall in this week. We pray earnestly for peaceful resolutions in theatres of war around the world today. Cowra in particular celebrates on Wednesday the good that continues to come from the POW breakout over 70 years later. Even out of the violence of over two hundred deaths here and the tragedy of war on the larger scale, good can be made to grow if enough good people with enough courage and perseverance take up the cause … and that is what has been given to us to carry on. Congratulations and thank you to the numerous students participating in community commemorations over these days; whether you are Youth Councillors, cadets, dancers, wreath layers and musicians - you add wonderfully to the community in which we live. The feast day of St Mary MacKillop will be celebrated this Friday at Mass (the actual feast day is on Sat. Aug th 8 ). “There where you are you will find God” is one of my favourite quotes from St Mary MacKillop. Best wishes to our athletes: Secondary athletes who qualified to represent K-10 Schools at Bathurst in the Diocesan Secondary Athletics compete on Thursday th (6 ). Primary athletes who qualified to represent K-10 Schools will compete at Bathurst on Friday in the Diocesan Primary Athletics competition. With the privilege of representation comes responsibility for fine conduct and attitude – live up to the role. Years 11/12: This week marks to beginning of the physical construction phase of our new secondary buildings. It seems to have taken forever to move from paper to actual building. Last week contracts between the Trustees of the Diocese and Peter O’Brien Constructions were finalised in Bathurst. P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

On Tuesday 28th July, the Stage 3 netball team travelled to Orange to compete in the regional finals of the Netball NSW Schools Cup, competing against teams from the Central Western area. The first game was against St Matthew’s Mudgee and after taking some time to warm up on the cold Orange morning the girls came away with a 15-4 win. The second game was against Holy Family Parkes where an outstanding performance saw the girls keep their opposition scoreless and win 29-0. Energy was lacking in game 3 and the girls were narrowly beaten by Cathedral Bathurst 10-8. The fourth game was against the undefeated St Mary’s Dubbo. The girls played an excellent game of netball and came out winners 18-11. The final round game was against St Joseph’s Gilgandra with another excellent performance and a 28-3 win. This placed the girls first in their pool and meant a Finals match up with Macquarie Anglican Grammar School Dubbo. A fabulous team performance with some very weary bodies saw the girls win the Final 26-6 and progress to the Grand Final against Cathedral Bathurst. After losing earlier in the day to Cathedral the girls were pumped for the Grand Final. The first half saw the game go goal for goal with a very nervous teacher and parents!

Tired and sore the girls used every last bit of energy in the second half, winning the Grand Final 18-8 and being crowned Schools Cup Regional Champions. This now places the team in the top 8 schools in the state. The girls will travel to Sydney in September to compete for the state title. We wish them the best of luck in Sydney and congratulate them on an outstanding performance in Orange. Their sportsmanship and teamwork was exceptional. Thank you also to the parents who provided transport for the girls and were a fabulous support on the day. The team: Zara McKenzie, Matilda Proctor, Madeline Roe, Alexie Buchtmann, Madelyn Stead, Ruby Frazer, Jorja Bone, Tayah Burns, Mackenzie Bone
