St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 4/B Newsletter 8 August 2016
Dear Parents Congratulations and thank you to the numerous students participating in community commemorations of the Breakout last week; whether you are Youth Councillors, cadets, wreath layers and musicians - you add wonderfully to the community in which we live. Aren’t the Olympics a wonderful opportunity to see the extraordinarily talented youth of the world at the height of their prowess pitting their skills against one another? There is much to be admired in the young with such focus and dedication. The feast day of St Mary MacKillop is celebrated today and we all attended Mass together. “There where you are you will find God” is one of my favourite quotes from St Mary MacKillop. On Friday of this week (12/8) students will be raising funds for the Vinnies Winter Appeal by conducting a mufti day. Please encourage your children to participate on behalf of the homeless and make a gold coin donation to the cause. One gold coin may not be much on its own but when over four hundred of us contribute we can collectively make life better for others. It is one year since construction work began here on the Mother Scholastica Learning Centre and we find ourselves enjoying the immense benefits it brings to our learning. Last week it was confirmed through the Federal Government that the opening of the MSLC will be held on September 18th. The opening will be an opportunity for the whole community to come and inspect this physical aspect of our expansion to Year 11 and 12. I am most grateful for the patience, flexibility and tolerance of staff, students and parents during that year of being in a sort of limbo in terms of temporary accommodation.
Feast of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Mary was a great Australian woman who inspired a strong dedication to God's work in the then new colonies. In today's world, she stands as an example of great courage and trust in her living out of God's loving and compassionate care of those in need. Today our School community attended Mass to celebrate the Feast of Mary MacKillop, and remember the life of Australia’s first saint.

learning. For some of you it will bring back memories (good or otherwise) but if they can talk to you, about their maths experiences, chances are they will recall it when needed. So please continue to reinforce that learning doesn’t only happen in school hours – any self-motivated opportunities to gain a better knowledge of mathematics will really help them. They just need that prompting from both teachers and parents – So, YES they can do something Maths based each afternoon. At the end of each topic area there is a task/test/activity done to see how much the student/s have developed. Again, ask your child what they may have done and how they went. These are only short term memory drill skills, however still very important, especially when they all have a Formal Assessment Task happening in Week 8 – that will require some long term recall processing. Year 11 General Mathematics ~ Moving into the last few topics of the Preliminary Course, our next one is Probability. “Chances of”/”fifty-fifty”/”not possible” – are all statements that can be generally made for events happening in life. So if something comes up in conversation regarding Probability – take the time to elaborate the chances of the event occurring. Reminders: 1. Don’t forget to involve your General Mathematics child/ren to help complete the Census 2016 for your household; 2. Students who have been on Work Placement must make sure that they have made time to look over work from last week in Maths; 3. Week 10 - Preliminary Exams – please be aware that your child needs to be reviewing all work that has been covered over the three terms of Year 11. Viewing past papers from the internet is a great way to study for this exam. Last Week's Challenge Answer ~ Place five other crosses in this grid so that the number of crosses in every row and column is an even number.

This Week's Challenge Question Secondary Mathematics News – “MATHS MATTERS!!!”
Year 7 – 10 ~ All households around Australia would have received the Census 2016 Forms in the mail. When you are filling these out, please involve your child/ren to assist with answering some of the questions. This is such a practical Statistics mathematics experience, so if possible include them to help, as in 4 years’ time they may have to fill one out for themselves (scary thought). Students in Year 7-8 classes will be changing teachers and topics this week. Year 9-10 classes will also be moving onto new topic areas. Just a reminder that students who attended Quinn Cup need to make sure they are up to date with all their work. This means that each student really should have shown you their work and explained what they may have been P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
If there are any questions about the Student Application Portfolios (not the Challenge Question), please don't hesitate to contact the Secondary Mathematics teachers. Mrs Cherie MacCabe Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au
Australian Junior Dirt Track Titles Broc travelled to Gunnedah over the weekend to compete in the Australian Junior Dirt Track Titles. He competed in 2 classes and qualified for both finals – a crash put him out of contention in the 65cc class but he went out on his 80 4 Stroke Modified th and managed 5 place. Well done to Broc who rode very well and was very happy with his results. Quinn Cup Returns Home Once again our students put their best foot forward in representing our school against the other school that make up the Quinn Cup competition. After the first day of events St. Raphael’s were down by just one point which was pegged back and then improved upon with wins in many events on the second day. Well done to all the students that attended and thankyou to all the families that continue to support such a great tradition.
respectfully acknowledge the 72nd Anniversary of the Cowra Breakout. Anna McNamara - School Captain and Charles Williams - Primary Prefect, laid wreaths to honour the sacrifices made on both sides of the conflict. We pray for peace and live in hope that humanity will learn from the mistakes of history rather than repeat them.
