St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 4/B Newsletter 7 August 2017 Hindmarsh Dairy. The massive support we have received from the community and from Grain Growers is humbling. Thank you.

Dear Parents Congratulations and thank you to the numerous students participating in community commemorations of the Breakout last weekend. The feast day of St Mary MacKillop is celebrated tomorrow and we will all attend Mass together at 9:30am. “There where you are you will find God” is one of my favourite quotes from St Mary MacKillop. On Friday of this week (11/8) students will be raising funds for the Vinnies Winter Appeal by conducting a mufti day. Please encourage your children to participate on behalf of the homeless and make a gold coin donation to the cause. One gold coin may not be much on its own but when over four hundred of us contribute we can collectively make life better for others. Year 10 students and several staff members are going that bit further and participating in the Vinnies Winter Sleepout in support of the homeless. Your sponsorship is called for. Staffing Update for Semester 2: Clerical Assistant (additional person for reception / First Aid Officer) Mrs Julie McLennan School Assistant (Learning support mainly in secondary) Mrs Kate Cucchiaro Assistant Wellbeing Coordinator (0.1) Mr David Lette PDHPE + Shared History load (1.0) Miss Larissa Atkinson. These roles will commence in Week 5. Thank you to those who have helped by bridging the gaps in the opening weeks of term. Thank you to the local companies which hosted VET students from Year 11 during their Work Placement. We place a very high value on the support you provide for our school. Quinn Cup at Lake Burrendong went ahead with a cleverly switched timetable to navigate around the wet times. This year St Matthews, Mudgee took the shield home. Congratulations to our squad which performed strongly and honourably. This week our Archibull Team is spending time with Dr Stephanie Fowler on the meat production element of the project. In addition the team is undertaking their Industry Excursion by visiting Illinois Farms, Cowra Grain and Seed, Peter Boyd Feedlot and Ian P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal In every state, every neighbourhood, every community. The reasons to donate are all around us. There are times, Lord, when we say we are hungry but we really have no idea what real hunger is, and the desperation that goes with it. We even tend to waste food. We ask you, Lord, to inspire us to discover the real priorities in life so that we may live simply so that others may simply live. Amen. “To whom much is given, much will be required” Luke 12:48

Why Get Involved? Schools are uniquely placed to help shape and influence community awareness and opinions. Hosting a Vinnies School Sleepout will: • Encourage students to connect with an evident and increasing need in their local community • Challenge our school community to raise funds to make a difference through social justice • Allow our school to advocate for people in need in the community • Raise awareness of the many faces of homelessness to help break down stereotypes • Bring students together with a united cause that benefits the community • Further educate our school and community Please donate to this great cause: nswvinniesschoolsleepout.gofundraise.com.au/page/St RaphaelsWarriors St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal Each year St Raphael’s takes part in raising funds for the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal. 4 foundation stones to building positive thoughts and resilience 1. Watch your thoughts. Talk to young people about the kinds of thoughts they have about themselves and their daily experiences. Encourage the child to watch their thoughts and not to be influenced by thoughts that make them feel bad about themselves, like “I’m so stupid”. 2. Question thoughts. Get children to ask themselves “are the upsetting thoughts I am thinking about myself/the situation really true?” what is the real outside evidence to support or dismiss these thoughts. For example if they feel that they don’t fit into a social group, point out times when they have done things with this group Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au

and who in the group has been friendly towards them. 3. Lead by example. Teachers and parents can model positive and accurate thinking patterns in everyday situations. For example, when they make a mistake, acknowledge it and confirm that they might find the task difficult but that they are still learning and trying hard to get it right. Follow up by saying that they are sure they will get it right first time next time. 4. Lead a healthy lifestyle. This helps give young people the strength they need to be resilient. Make sure children are in a settled and regular routine. They need a good night’s sleep with a set going to bed time, especially on school nights. Children aged 5 to 12 need 10-12 hours sleep per night; while those aged 12 to 15 need 8 to 10 hours. They also need a healthy and varied diet which includes vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and high quality meat and fish. Regular daily exercise is also important. It is recommended that they play outside or engage in sports for an hour a day, every day. This also acts as a natural antidepressant and stress reliever as it helps release ‘happy hormones’ into the system. S. Whiteley - Pastoral Care and Student Wellbeing NED Show Infants and Primary students were treated to a high energy performance last Monday to promote positive attitudes towards school. The presenter used yoyo tricks, magic tricks and audience participation to inform students of the meaning of NED. N – Never give up E – Encourage others D – Do your best A NED zone was set up in the playground for the week for students to use yoyo’s that may have been purchased. Students have been having fun trying new skills and tricks. Please refer to the NED website for any queries about faulty yoyo’s or other enquiries. It is requested that yoyo’s now stay at home as the NED zone is no longer applicable. Mr Colemane - Primary Wellbeing Coordinator

The level of dignity and respect exhibited by these young leaders was highly commendable and appreciated by the veterans and community members present. Mr Lette Year 11 Ancient History Last Friday Year 11 Ancient History travelled to the University of Sydney's Nicholson Museum, where we were treated to a hands on experience examining artefacts from across the Ancient World.

Students Ben Price and Matthew Mood were exposed to the latest developments in archaeological research, along with an impressive model of ancient Pompeii made from Lego, (Note to Santa, I want it for Christmas!).

Eastern Athletics Carnival On Friday, 28th July, St. Raphael's Catholic School had a big, strong contingent of athletes head off to Bathurst to compete at the eastern Carnival. Our students performed well in the coolish conditions, with lots of "Personal Bests" achieved on the day. Ky Garratt broke a record in the Discus. Actually, he smashed it by over 6 metres! Wowsers! We had an Age Champion as well, with Laura Price taking out the Junior Girls point score. Ky Garratt finished 2nd in the Junior Boys division. We now have 8 students who have progressed to the next carnival to be held in Dubbo on the 18th August. Well done to all of our students who performed admirably.
