The Feast of the Assumption

Dear Parents, Thank you to those rugged volunteers for the Vinnies Sleepout and to the sponsors and soup makers. Homelessness is a most serious issue and we need look no further than our own community to see its impact on people’s lives. This shouldn’t be an issue in Australia where we say we take care of one another. Thank goodness for the wonderful work of Vinnies and Fr Chris Riley’s Youth Off the Streets and their likes. Tomorrow morning the whole school will gather to celebrate the Mass of the Assumption which is focused on the life and spirituality of Mary. In the near future NAPLAN results will be arriving at schools for distribution to parents. The testing undertaken in May each year is a snapshot learning in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9. In addition to seeing how a whole group is progressing the data provides valuable information about learning growth since the previous testing, normally two years before. Massive planning around resources, staffing and furnishing are now underway here in preparation for 2018. If your plans are going to impact the school in any way next year, now is the time to say so, enabling us to get things as right as possible for everyone. Please ring in / email and let us know. This week sees parents and teachers in discussion about the Semester Two Individual Learning Plans for specific students. If, at any time, you wish to discuss the learning progress of your child, please make contact with school and an appointment will be set up with the relevant staff member(s). Thank you for the loyalty and support you give to our St Raphael’s family for the sake of our children – together we can achieve the extraordinary with them.

The Prayer Of Mary My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever. (Lk 1:46-55)

Year 9 NAPLAN Results And The HSC Minimum Standard Message from NESA HSC minimum standard required to receive the HSC from 2020 Literacy and numeracy skills are the foundation for success in life after school. This is why eligibility for the HSC is changing. From 2020, students will need to show they have the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to complete everyday tasks. Your child will have a number of opportunities from Year 9 to Year 12, and even after the HSC to show they meet the HSC minimum standard Some students will meet the requirement early through their Year 9 NAPLAN results in reading, writing and numeracy. However, most students will show they meet the standard by passing short, online reading, writing and numeracy tests in Years 10, 11 or 12. Year 9 NAPLAN reports available in mid-August Your child’s Year 9 NAPLAN report will indicate which online HSC minimum standard test/s (if any) they will need to pass to be eligible for the HSC certificate. Remember your child has three more years of learning before the HSC and can take the HSC minimum standard online tests in Years 10, 11 or 12. Year 9 NAPLAN is a good chance to check they are on track or get support to meet the minimum standard by Year 12. If your child has achieved a Band 8 or above in reading, writing or numeracy, the NAPLAN report will indicate that they have “Met the HSC minimum standard early” in the respective area/s. Your child can sit the online HSC minimum standard tests when they are ready There are three separate 45 minute online tests: reading, writing and numeracy. Students don’t have to pass all three tests at once and can attempt each test up to twice a year. The reading and numeracy tests each contain a maximum of 45 multiple choice questions. The writing test will require students to respond to a question about a prompt or stimulus. You can try some sample reading and numeracy questions at https://hscliteracynumeracy.nesa.nsw.edu.au/ For more information visit www.educationstandards.nsw.edu.au

I liked going to the museum and seeing the old trains. – George I liked the telescope and scavenger hunt because it was learning in the form on fun, and I liked the 3D theatre because it looked like it was coming out at you like you could touch it. - Zoe In the museum we saw really cool trains. We saw old things that people used in old kitchens – Elliott I loved it when we went to the Parkes Telescope and learned HEAPS about stars. – Georgia My favourite part of going to Parkes was going to Memorial Hill. I loved looking at the tall white building and looking at the countries and they had beautiful plants and flowers from each country. – Sophie

Archibull 2017 News It's been a busy week for the team! 1. We had our second Young Farming Champion , Dr Stephanie Fowler, do a presentation on the use of technology in agriculture. Steph's research has been on the prediction of lamb quality, the development of new technologies for lamb carcass quality, yield assessment and the development of nutritional data for lamb cuts. Steph had us fascinated with the depth of her skill and how her career as a research scientist has evolved. She placed her work in the context of our Grain industry research- increasing global demand for food puts a demand on quality and quantity.

wanted information on how to represent our Indigenous history in an accurate, respectful and appropriate manner. They provided us with valuable insights. The Archie team headed out on an Industry Excursion on Wednesday. It was an excellent field trip that gave us insight into the "grain-chain". We were inspired by the adaptive technologies that enterprises use. The key to success is identifying weak areas and using innovative solutions to overcome them. Many thanks to Alison Rutledge, Ben Johnstone, Ray Wallace (Cowra Seed & Grain),

Quinn Cup 2017 The annual Quinn Cup sporting and academic competition was held at Lake Burrendong at the end of Week 3. Students from years 9 and 10 participated in activities and games ranging from dodge ball to soccer, chess and dance. Although we experienced many highlights; dominating the girls volleyball, Brian MacCabe’s backflip in the dance competition and the Kyle and Lucas tennis dream team, we narrowly missed out on bringing the shield home this year. St Matthew’s Mudgee took out the Quinn Cup, St Mary’s Wellington won the Most Improved and St Raphael’s won the ‘Sportsmasters’ (or sportsmanship) trophy. The students should be commended on their efforts both in competition and socially. It was fantastic to see St Raphael’s students commending efforts of opposition team members, teaching students from other schools dance moves at the social and offering to help staff from all schools present.
