St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 6/B Newsletter 22 August 2016 finalised. If you have plans for next year and beyond that will impact on the school, please let us know promptly. Dear Parents Last week at Dubbo representative athletes from schools of the diocese competed to select a team to represent the Bathurst Diocese at the next level of competition. Impressive performances by the two St Raphael’s contingents saw several students named in the squads for primary and secondary. In an Olympic week of competition numerous pbs were produced at Dubbo as well as Rio.

This week is Migrant & Refugee Week – there are moral issues here that on which we as a Catholic institution should have a clear position Congratulations on the fine array of imaginative costumes on show today at the annual Book Week Parade - a most enjoyable and memory-making event. NAPLAN reports are being distributed tomorrow to families all across Australia tomorrow, Tuesday. If these reports raise any questions you would like to discuss, please contact the school and make an appointment to have a discussion with your child’s teacher.. Finally we have gold at Hill End – best wishes to Year 5 and teachers on Wednesday and Thursday. Intrepid SLR students (Year 11 Sports, Lifestyle and Recreation) ventured into Deep Pass for two days last week and survived their challenges with confidence. Semester 2 Individual Learning Plans were topics of deep discussion between parents teachers during last week. Such dialogue mutual support are most important parts of partnership for the benefit of the children.

Project Based Learning is being used in many of our classrooms and joint planning sessions are being provided for groups of teachers over the next two weeks. This is one of the strategies adopted to address individualised learning needs and engagement. Applications for enrolment are being received at this stage so we must know the numbers in each year group very accurately to enable applications to be P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

Monday 22 Happy birthday to Abby Baker and Lecksi Killick. Book Week Parade.
Chapter there is a Review Set – please check to see that questions are being solved by showing working out the steps, as this gives them reassurance that they are succeeding instead of just guessing. So Test Prep is in progress…….. however, please make sure you actually “Disturb them” to see whether they are studying. Year 11 General Mathematics ~ To complete the Trigonometry unit, these students need to consider not just measurements and angle sizes, but also bearings and similarity (shrinking/enlarging ideas). For some of them their experience at Outward Bound, a few years ago, will assist this concept. An area of work that all these students must to be working on – are worded questions, where comprehension is necessary for the answer to be solved. Reading the question thoroughly, drawing diagrams and writing down their process of solving. This takes practice and it will take time, but it is worth it in the end.

Reminders: Week 10 - Preliminary Exams – please be aware that your child needs to be reviewing all work that has been covered over the three terms of Year 11. To gain the best results in the General Mathematics Course: I cannot stress how important it is, for any Year 11 student, to be working on new maths questions each afternoon for a set time period. Not just reading over notes, but actually scribbling down solutions, for questions that they have never attempted before and having the answer available to check at the end. There is an Internet site that gives past paper questions (students have address to this via my email) and the students have access to their textbook code to go onto Review Sets as well. No excuses – 4 weeks till EXAMS ~ lots of maths work can happen in that amount of time ~ effort needs to be shown by all students to help them feel comfortable in these testing times. As parents and teachers – let’s work together to make sure they don’t leave “it” till the last minute. Last Week's Challenge Answer:
Secondary Mathematics News – “MATHS MATTERS!!!”
Year 7 – 10 ~ Well Done to students whom sat in the ICAS Maths / ICAS English Tests last week ~ Participation Plus. Speaking of testing – all Naplan results will be arriving home soon. Early Reminder: Week 8 is Maths Assessment Week for Year 7 – 10 ~ please keep your child/ren working on some Mathematical aspect of study between now and then. The topics that can be tested at this time, is anything that has been taught after the Half Yearly exams. To get the list, have your child/ren check through their maths books from that time. This in a way is just a great process of review and recall for any work covered this year. The best way to practice is to DO questions….not just READ notes. Each child has access to their textbook at home and at the end of each

PASTORAL CARE/WELLBEING You will be aware from different news media outlets during the last week of a disturbing story regarding the trading in on-line images of school students for pornography sharing purposes. The following is an extract from one such article: SERIOUS ON-LINE EXPLOITATION OF GIRLS “MORE than 70 Australian schools are targets for a perverse pornography ring of teen boys and young men secretly swapping and exchanging graphic sexual images of female students and other non-consenting women. Young men use the site to nominate the specific high school or region they are phishing for nude photos from, along with the full names of girls they are “hunting”. Hundreds of individual names have appeared on “wanted” lists, including the names of sisters and entire high school friendship circles. Once a girl’s name appears on a list, other members of the group then “contribute” by posting identifying information about the intended victim, such as her full name, face, school, home address, and phone number, along with directives like “Go get her boys!” So far thousands of explicit, nude images of teen girls and young women have been uploaded or traded on the swap-meet site.” At St Raphael’s we are very aware of the potential risks and dangers attached to the misuse of social media. Students have attended workshops, received advice from Police Liaison Staff and experienced drama performances which highlighted the problems that could be encountered by even the most careful user of the different platforms available. These initiatives do not mean that all our students always make good and safe choices in the use of their devices. Please be vigilant and attentive to the on-line life of your young people. The temptations are many and one poor choice posting a photo can result in serious embarrassment or worse, as seen above. The legal consequences can result in a record which precludes employment in many areas. Infant's Children Emergency Supplies Accidents can occur at any time to anyone and we encourage all parents to ensure that your child keeps a spare pair of socks and underpants in a concealed bag (if possible) within their school bag. Having an accident can be an embarrassing time for children and although as teachers we try to be very considerate and discreet; extra underpants and socks makes the situation much less traumatic for your child.

Lost Property Lost property is a reality of school life. Labelling helps us to return the property promptly to the correct owner. We depend on families to check that the clothing children bring home is actually theirs. The vast majority is successfully reunited with its owner. During each term unlabelled / unclaimed property accumulates at the front office. Parents are encouraged to take the chance to come in and check. After a term unclaimed lost property is kept in a basket in the store room, still available for the owner to claim. After another term any remaining unclaimed lost property will be allocated to either St Vincent de Paul or our Clothing Pool. Book Club Please note book club orders need to be returned to st school no later than Wednesday 31 August in order for the orders to be processed for this issue. Any orders received after this will only be processed mid-September. Please ensure your child’s name and class are clearly marked on the order. Thank you. Address: ___________________________________________ Phone: _______________________________________ A Random Act Of Gratitude Following the 2015 St Raphael’s Christmas Fair the P & F Association were left with some unsold Pick A Box items. The items were all vouchers with a fast approaching used by date that would make them unsuitable to use at this year’s event. At the June meeting it was resolved that these vouchers would be granted to volunteers of the St Raphael’s school community in a Random Act of Gratitude. Volunteers are priceless and tireless and their efforts deserve acknowledgement. Names of those who have volunteered on all levels were placed in the draw. From gardening, working bees, canteen, Ball organisers/volunteers, balloon glow, Christmas fair volunteers. Recipients of the vouchers include David Stendell, Tracy Gunnyon, Mary Campbell, and David O’Brien. Many thanks to all of those who contribute on so many different levels, your efforts are greatly appreciated and never go unnoticed. Regards Alison Rosewarne
