St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 6/B Newsletter 27 August 2018

Dear Parents, The Book Week parade, Open Classroom, Book Stall and picnic lunch on Friday was a terrific success due to the enthusiasm and playfulness of parents, teachers and students. That positive attitude sets a beautiful tone that guarantees success and openness to the richness of reading and books. Thank you to Mrs Peta Bischof and the Year 10 supporters who sponsored or accompanied them in their Winter Sleepout on Friday. Thank you also to Miss Gabby Bischof and the Year 8 supporters in their 40 Hour Famine on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The selflessness of these emerging adults is inspirational and bodes well for the future of our community. Thank you to those who supported the Migrants and Refugees Liturgies on Saturday and Sunday and to those who helped hosting the Parish Dinner here at school for Choir and Sacristans. Ms Meaghan Trudgett (Centacare) is our new school counsellor. She will commence service here on September 3rd and will attend on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Ms Wendy Bernheim, who has been keeping us afloat since Easter, will continue to attend weekly for the remainder of the term, then fortnightly in Term 4. The Father’s Day Breakfast is being conducted at the school on Friday morning from 7:30 through to 8:30am. The inspiration of strong male role models is pivotal in the raising of children – we pray earnestly for our fathers and father figures that they will be encouraged and strengthened in their endeavours. Applications for enrolment are being received at this stage so we must know the numbers in each year group very accurately to enable applications to be finalised. If you have plans for next year and beyond that will impact on the school, please let us know promptly.

Art in a Suitcase "Art in a Suitcase" has arrived at St Raphael's! An initiative begun by the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery to extend the arts across the region. The "suitcase" brings the art to the school - with students allowed to touch, contemplate and respond to the works. Seven regional artists with works in range of media such as bronze, glass, stone, found materials, steel and ceramics. A wonderful program sponsored by Country Energy. It will stay at our school for a couple of weeks engaging students from K-year 12. Visual Art Department Year 1 Technology To assist Year One students in making their technology experience more streamlined, we request the following items as soon as they can be supplied. A personal lanyard ( to attach laminated cards with our log in, password details etc.) Any colour, advertising logo, footy team, recycled etc lanyards are all acceptable. A personal pair of earphones to be used ONLY by your child. Cheap, recycled are all OK. They just need to work correctly. Big thanks to Mr David Lee our school technology guru. He found teaching Yr. 1 computers a very different experience from teaching Yr.12, BUT he didn’t stop being positive and smiley. Well Done Mr. Lee! Mrs White and Mr Statham P.O. Library News Book Parade: a big thank you to our creative students, staff and parents as we celebrated books and the treasures they can give us. We were blessed by a lovely day in a wonderful setting in our new playground area. Premier Reading Challenge: for those students who need to get their home reading list to Mrs Skinner, do so by this Wednesday please. This allows your books to be entered and validated. Chess Knockout Years 5 and 6: Draw 1 has commenced but please see me if you were unable to be there so you can be part of the challenge. Happy Reading K. Skinner

Quinn Cup 2018 The annual Quinn Cup sporting and academic competition was held at Lake Burrendong at the end of Week 4. Students from years 8, 9 and 10 participated in a range of activities and games. This year our very competitive Quinn Cup team were awarded first place for ten of the sixteen events, resulting in St Raphael’s winning the 2018 Quin Cup and bringing the shield home. The students should be commended on their efforts both in competition and socially. It was fantastic to see St Raphael’s students commending efforts of opposition team members, socialising with students from all schools and always offering to help. The Quinn Cup team of 2018 were an absolute pleasure to take away, congratulations on a great two days!
