St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 7/A Newsletter 28 August 2017
Dear Parents The Book Parade was a major feature of last week in the Primary Department. The imagination, playfulness and in some cases the teamwork of the whole event was a delight. Yes, OK, I know the angst that dress-up days cause parents and entire households but children, and staff members just seem to get a thrill from “putting themselves out there”. Thank you for embracing the parade so wholeheartedly.
rediscover the importance and richness of their role. I saw a great book title the other day – “Male by Birth. Man by Choice” … doesn’t it say a lot. To mark the occasion Fathers and children are invited to attend a Fathers Day Breakfast on Friday morning (from 7:30am)

The Year 12 Showcase of Music, Art, Construction and Hospitality last Thursday was an excellent event in a variety of ways. Thank you for the strong support given by participating and congratulations to the immensely talents students and staff members who have brought out and honed the talents of these students. The weekend just passed marked Migrant / Refugee Sunday. From the simple, powerful words “I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Mt 25:35) Catholic teaching on this matter is crystal clear. It is based on the principles of: “Human Dignity”, “Justice and Mercy”, “the right to seek asylum”. Pope Francis chose the 2017 theme: “Child Migrants, the Vulnerable and the Voiceless”. All this is very interesting until it gets to the tough bit where the question is posed “Now what will you do about it?” Parent / Teacher Discussions for Primary families are on tomorrow – the positive learning partnerships established through these discussions is immensely beneficial to the students and their learning, so I strongly encourage your participation. Year 12 successes continue to flow with 45% of our students already having confirmed Early University Entry or Apprenticeship.
Jesus said, “Who do you say I am?”. Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the son of the living God”. Matthew 16: 13-20 Reflection Jesus could trust Peter to be honest – he would say what was on his mind and in his heart. As Jesus asks me the same question, I answer honestly, knowing that nothing I say will alienate Jesus. If I am uncertain about what to say, I invite Jesus to look at my life and to see how I give witness (Sacred Space).
Fathers' day next weekend is certainly worth celebrating because there is a lot more at stake than the profit margin from the commercialisation. Gather with and pray for/with fathers next Sunday in particular, to be good men and affirm them in their efforts to P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

Year 11 Visit Yalbillinga On Thursday, Year 11 Exploring Early Childhood students Jess and Chantell went to Yalbillinga Day Care Centre. They spent time in the 0-3 years room, reading stories, singing and preparing the children for lunch time. This was a very valuable experience for Jess and Chantell, allowing them to put their theoretical knowledge into practice in a friendly environment. Thank you to the Yalbillinga staff for accommodating us and to Mrs Hubber for organising this wonderful experience! BOOK WEEK: Thank you so much for the participation that led to our colourful Book Parade last Wednesday. It is appreciated that the pupils, staff and parents put a lot of work into making this a successful event that celebrates the love of reading and appreciation of books in our well resourced library.

Diocesan Athletics Carnival - Primary On Friday, 18th August, eight St. Raphael's Primary students travelled to a coolish and windy Dubbo. These children had made it through two carnivals, our school carnival held in Cowra, followed by the Eastern Region carnival held in Bathurst. To make it to Dubbo was pretty impressive in itself! Our students performed admirably, with Ky Garratt successful in attaining a position on the Bathurst Diocese team that will compete in Newcastle at the Polding Carnival on the 8th September. Ky also broke another record in the Junior Discus, with a throw of 29.83m. He is fast becoming a 'throwing machine!' Special thanks to all parents and carers for driving the children to Dubbo, helping to cheer them on. A very special thank you to Lisa Price who backed up for a second day in Dubbo. She had been there the previous day with the Secondary students, but was still energetic enough to help all day on the High Jump. Greatly appreciated, Lisa. Congratulations to all eight Primary students on your efforts and behaviour on the day. Good luck Ky at Newcastle. P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
