St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 7/A Newsletter 29 August 2016

Dear Parents The Book Parade was a major feature of last week. The imagination, playfulness and in some cases the teamwork of the whole event was a delight. Yes, OK, I know the angst that dress-up days cause parents and entire households but children, young and old (secondary age and staff members) just seem to get a thrill from “putting themselves out there”. Thank you for embracing the parade so wholeheartedly. Today we hosted the Learning Support Teachers from throughout the Bathurst Diocese. Not only are we proud to have these guests with us to learn from how we do things around here but also to share in the benefits of our lovely facilities and hospitality. Consultations continue regarding the replacement of the roof in the primary department over Rooms P10P14. Teachers as learners too: this week teachers from our school are involved in the following professional learning activities – Stage 3 Science and Technology (1 day), Mindset, Measurement and Management (2 days), Secondary Maths Network (1 day), Primary professional learning Community (2 days), Visual Art (1 day), Resilience (2 days). Thank you teachers for the fine learning example you’re setting.

“All who exalt themselves shall be humbled and all who humble themselves shall be exalted” Luke 14: 1, 7-14

Save the dates in your Calendar! Please complete the RSVP section at the end of the newsletter and return to the front office. Thank you.

On next Sunday evening School Captains, Anna and Anthony will represent our St Raphael’s family at a reception in honour of Their Excellencies General, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and Lady Cosgrove. Fathers' day next weekend is certainly worth celebrating because there is a lot more at stake than the profit margin from the commercialisation. Gather with and pray for/with fathers next Sunday in particular, to be good men and affirm them in their efforts to rediscover the importance and richness of their role. I saw a great book title the other day – “Male by Birth. Man by Choice” … doesn’t it say a lot.

Secondary Mathematics News – “MATHS MATTERS!!!”

Year 7 – 10 ~ Each year the Australian Government designate special weeks to specific areas. This week is National Literacy and Numeracy Week, where activities may be done in classes that could engage your child in their subjects in variety of different ways. Really we should not just have 1 week only – Maths should be in our thoughts each week, each day really – so it would be great if your child/ren could cook a meal, draw a perspective drawing, create something from nothing or anything that you feel could P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

challenge them. As parents, you would have now received your child/ren’s paper copy of their Naplan results – please ask if you have any questions in relation to this and how they have improved from the previous results. Early Reminder: Students have now been given their Assessment Notifications for Week 8 ~ please keep your child/ren working on some Mathematical aspect of study between now and then. The topics that can be tested at this time, per year group are written on the form, is anything that has been taught after the Half Yearly exams. Please have your child/ren check through their maths books over the work that has been done since the Half Yearly. . Remember : The best way to practice for exam questions is to DO questions….not just READ notes. Review Sets are great – please check to see that questions are being solved by showing working out steps. Please help them, yourselves and teachers to get into a routine. Year 11 General Mathematics ~ Wow….. Our last unit – last chapter in the textbook…. means that it’s now very close to having to know it all!!! This topic is all about Mobile Phones ~ and yes – they actually knew what I was talking about and how to use them. Again, as parents I need your assistance – please show them the/their phone bill / talk about the options / payments / changes / etc. Most of the questions are going to be about common sense usage from tables. However, when it comes to teaching the Bytes section – I’m sure that I will learn more from them. Study Habits: An area of work that all these students must to be working on – are worded questions, where comprehension is necessary for the answer to be solved. Reading the question thoroughly, drawing diagrams and writing down their process of solving. This takes practice and it will take time, but it is worth it in the end. Reminders: Week 10 - Preliminary Exams – An area of work that all these students must to be working on – are worded questions, where comprehension is necessary for the answer to be solved. Reading the question thoroughly, drawing diagrams and writing down their process of solving. This takes practice and it will take time, but it is worth it in the end. Scrap pieces of paper for your child/ren would be helpful – as they need to practice writing down anything from the questions to help solve each question. For all Year 11 students: No excuses – 3 weeks till EXAMS ~ lots of learning can happen ~ effort needs to be shown by all students to help them feel comfortable in these testing times. As parents and teachers – let’s Email: straphaels@bth.catholic.edu.au School Website: www.straphaelscowra.catholic.edu.au

work together to make sure they don’t leave “study” until the last minute. Last

As a ‘thank you’ for your patience and flexibility in studying around a construction site, we would like to invite all students (Yr6 to Yr11) to a social on Tuesday 6th Sept. (6.30pm to 9pm).
