St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 9/A Newsletter 7 September 2015

Dear Parents Kindy Start is a pivotal element in this school for introducing new parents and new kindy children to the St Raphael’s family. Kindy Start is an excellent forum for teachers and parents to discuss issues surrounding the transition between home / pre-school and “big” school. It also offers the opportunity to observe the responses of the children to the new tasks and new environment of St Raphael’s. This coming Thursday we commence Kindy Start sessions (1:30pm – 3pm). The matter of issuing email addresses to primary students opens access for the children to a host of learning opportunities. Additionally, there has to be explicit training around cybersafety built into the daily curriculum. You are invited to attend a presentation at 6pm this evening by Mrs Vicki Vance designed to assist you to take full advantage of both the learning opportunities and safety element. Tomorrow evening the P&F Association is conducting the September meeting at 7pm in the staff room. You are, of course, encouraged and welcome to participate. Representative athletes from the primary performed with excellence at Newcastle last week with three qualifying to belong to the Polding team competing at Olympic Park at PSSA in October. We wish the four secondary representatives competing this week in Sydney to qualify for the Combined Catholic Colleges team. Stages 2 and 3 are presenting their talented performances at 6:30pm on Thursday evening at St Raphael’s Hall. Set the time aside to be thoroughly entertained. We have a busy and very rich week ahead – let’s make the most of it.

He even causes the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak! Mark 7: 37 CHILD PROTECTION SUNDAY 13 September 2015
The 2015 National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) Child Protection Week campaign stresses the importance of primary prevention to reduce child abuse and neglect in Australia. The theme this year is: Be Someone Who Listens To Children. Prayer for the Healing of Victims of Abuse God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just: You gave your only Son to save us by the blood of his cross. Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear our cries as we agonize over the harm done to our brothers and sisters. Breathe wisdom into our prayers, soothe restless hearts with hope, steady shaken spirits with faith: Show us the way to justice and wholeness, enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy. Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace, so that we may act with justice and find peace in you. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. (Prayer: U.S. Bishops Conference) A Committee of the Australian Catholic Bishops & the Catholic Religious Australia National Committee for Professional Standards

Condolences On Friday evening Fr Doug Akehurst, President of St Stanislaus’ College, passed away. We pray for the Stannies community as students, staff and parents mourn the loss of a well-loved leader. Diocesan Appeal The Bishop has asked that you consider donating to the appeal for supporting the Retired Priests of the diocese. These men have given their life for the wellbeing of parishioners and establishment of services and schools like St Raphael’s, their modest needs should now be addressed with dignity, generosity and respect. We have 10 currently retired priests and three to join their ranks in the next few years. A sealable brochure has being circulated for you to complete and post. Thank you in anticipation of your generosity.

P and F Parent Contribution. The P and F want to thank parents for their P and F contributions. We’d also like to remind you that the small Parent Contribution you make each term was designed to replace the many small raffles and fundraisers we used to have. It’s not a replacement for being involved in your school and helping out at our events and projects. Our school would be a much poorer place without your support. These are just some of the many things the P and F have funded for St Raphs in P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940

St Raphael’s CHRISTMAS FAIR UPDATE! Welcome to the 2015 St Raphael’s Christmas Fair! This will give everyone a heads up on plans, and hopefully engage support from parents, teachers and local community. We have some exciting ideas for this year! Stalls will have prizes (donated and purchased) to hand out so start dropping in your unwanted toys, games, teddies and gift items - in clean good condition please! Students who help set up the Fair (they were amazing last year!) will receive free Sideshow Alley tickets. I’m hoping parents and teachers will get behind this idea. Local business will be encouraged to run a game to support the school and promote their business with signage, decorations and their cards and fliers. Ideas include: Ring or Coin Toss Money Tree with Scratchies Dunking Machine. We have one! Need someone to run it. Sponge Throw Jump Rope Contest Exercise Bike or Rowing Machine Races Stacked Can Shoot Fishing for Ducks in Pond Stick Lotto – Ice Block Sticks with numbers buried in sand Darts at Balloons Water Balloon Throw Pot Luck (Sand and prize in cup tipped through strainer) Ducking for Apples Netball or Basketball Toss Marble Mayhem (fill a flower pot with marbles using tsp) Pick the Card Ring a Soft Drink Bottle Dig for Treasure (dinosaurs & crystals?) We’re look for a better PA and lights, and maybe a stage. A program will be published in the Cowra Guardian. We have a delightful MC. NEW FUNNY PHOTO BOOTH! Can include funny people painted on cardboard with holes for faces, and dress up props like wigs, moustaches, hats, sunglasses, boas, etc. Take photos with a Polaroid and sold on the day. A coordinator and helpers would be much appreciated for this stall. Costs will be covered by P and F. KID’S CORNER: Kirsty Stephenson has put her hand up to coordinate this area. Thanks Kirsty! Kirsty will also be speaking to parents to fill the volunteer roster. We would love a Santa to volunteer for an hour or two. SCHOOL STANDS: We have our traditional stalls (Pick a Box, Ham Wheel, Cake Stall, Jazzy Jars, Book Stall, Clothing Pool, BBQ, Face Painting, Plant Stall, Raffles, Lucky Dip and Guessing Competition) and hopefully new ones like Trash & Treasure, Helium Balloons, Craft, Cupcake Decorating, Corn on the Cob, Farm Produce, Plaster Painting and Sand Art. You could include tattoos, nail painting and stick on nail designs if you wish. The P and F will supply what you need. Check school newsletter for weekly themes: Games (dice, cards, marbles, balls, yoyos, etc), Stationary, Lollies, Jewellery/Hair Accessories, Pampering/Makeup, Arts/Crafts, and Small toys/Figurines. The Christmas Fair is a lot of fun! Whether you want to coordinate a stall, host a Sideshow Alley game, help for an hour or two on day setting up or packing down, work in a stall or sell tickets for the raffles or rides, your support would be much appreciated! We really can’t do this without you. Ona Lawrence, P and F Publicity Officer and Christmas Fair organiser, 6345 1789, 0409 608 118, straphaelspnf@gmail.com. P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
