St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 3, Week 9/A Newsletter 11 September 2017 On Wednesday of this week the first HSC practical music exam is conducted and, while we have every confidence in the enormous ability of our candidates we wish them well in their performances.
Dear Parents, Kindy Start is a pivotal transition in this school for introducing new parents and new kindy children to the St Raphael’s family. Kindy Start is an excellent forum for teachers and parents to discuss issues surrounding the movement between home / pre-school and “big” school. It also offers the opportunity to observe the responses of the children to the new tasks and new environment of St Raphael’s. To launch this year’s Kindy Start programme a meeting of parents was conducted last week and the first children’s session will occur on Thursday of this week. We warmly welcome new families and new children into our school family. After considering the school starting process the next topic is school leadership and the phrase comes to mind “from little things big things grow”. As our first Year 12 cohort approaches the finish of their formal schooling at the end of this term they hand over Student Leadership responsibilities to the next cohort.
All the best to our Milo T20 Cricketers who will be padding up on Thursday. And congratulations to our award winning artists of recycled materials – such skill and creativity! Mid semester Progress Reports will be circulated this week for years 7 to 10. These reports are intended to bring you up to speed about the learning progress of your children across all subjects and are a good lead into the Parent / Teacher discussions early next term. Next weekend our school and parish families gather to celebrate the First Eucharist of about 30 young parishioners. The Eucharist is one of the Sacraments designed for frequent participation because it’s about growth, and nutrition and healing and relationship – things we have to do daily / regularly.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleepout 2017 Report Traditionally, Year 10 students at St Raphael’s Catholic School are given the opportunity to participate in the St Vincent de Paul winter Sleep Out. The purpose of participating in this event is two-fold. Firstly, to raise personal and public awareness of homelessness and the complications of homelessness. The students research and discuss the topic, particularly the assumptions they hold. Using the knowledge and attitudes they have developed they speak at both the primary and secondary assembly and write articles for the school newsletter. The second part of participating requires students to gain sponsorship and raise money for the valuable work Vinnies do in this area. This year, sixteen students and four teachers volunteered to sleep rough. The night began with a prayer service in the chapel with members for St Vincent de Paul. A meal of soup and bread rolls, provided by staff members, was shared by all. A very chilly night followed, but the comradery and fun made things bearable. Everyone was extremely grateful to the Vinnie’s members who turned up early the next morning to cook delicious bacon and egg muffins. All participants were grateful for the opportunity to learn and do something for others. They were also extremely grateful for the support of the local Vinnie’s members and St Raphael’s parish, in particular, St Edwards Canowindra. “Doing the Vinnie’s Winter Sleep Out was a good experience because we got to understand what it is like to be homeless just for a night. It also felt good to raise money and give to others” “It was good to spend time with friends and give to people” “My ideas about why people become homeless have really changed. I didn’t understand that often people don’t have a choice”

Polding Representative A couple of weeks ago, Year 6 boy Stanley Rush made it into his second Polding team for the year, which is pretty remarkable in itself! This time it was Rugby Union, playing second row up at Salamander Sports Complex in the Newcastle district. The Polding team finished 5th although they only suffered the one loss to Sydney North. Well done Stanley on a stellar year, having already represented Polding in Rugby League last term. Stanley is pictured here with last year's Polding Captain.
