St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 4, Week 6/B Newsletter 19 November 2018
Dear Parents,
Feast of Christ the King Christ the King Sunday celebrates the all-embracing authority of Christ as King and Lord of all things. It celebrates the role of Jesus as King over all the universe. However, we must recall that Jesus is King because he is a humble servant. Jesus' kingship is one of power and might, but also love and humility.
During this term at school the important task of staff recruitment is underway. Careful selection of the best staff available goes a long way to determining the tone of a school which is a major reason behind our current strength. Staffing levels, of course, are linked to enrolments which is why I constantly ask that the school be promptly informed if your plans could impact our enrolments. Keep our First Reconciliation children and their families in your prayers and they participate in preparations for the Sacrament Stage 5 Exams are on the agenda this week and we wish those students well in their preparations. May their hands be steady and their minds clear. The Rite Journey Solo is a challenging time for young people to invest time alone with their thoughts and reflections without the distractions of technology and groups. Solo time gets us more in touch with our inner life and sounds quite simple until we try it – minus the music, minus the company, minus the social media, minus the phone. Year 9 students along with Miss Isedale and Mr Lowe took on the challenge last Thursday evening for an overnight solo. Congratulations to all those who participated so well. The annual Christmas Fair conducted by the P&F Association is being held on Friday evening. With the many visitors who characteristically attend we’re going to need many volunteers at the various stalls and activities. Typically, three or four shifts are needed on the stalls as well as set-up and pack-up – so, if you can offer an hour it will be very much appreciated.

Lord Jesus, when You walked the earth, Your humility obscured Your Kingship. Your meekness confused the arrogant, Hindering them from grasping Your purpose, Teach me to model after Your eminence, To subject my human nature to humility. Grant me with a natural inclination To never view myself greater than anyone. Banish all lingering sparks of self-importance That could elevate me greater than You. Let my heart always imitate Your humility! Amen

War and Peace in the Pacific 75 Education Project Early in term 2 this year our school was approached by the Australian National Maritime Museum (based at Darling Harbour, Sydney) to participate in an international history research project with a focus on finding out what life was like for the people in our local communities during WWII. Since Australia's involvement in WWII is a compulsory area of study for Years 9 and 10 students, we accepted the invitation and we haven’t looked back on a remarkable learning experience. The culmination of the original research work conducted by our entire Stage 5 group of students over terms 2 and 3 was the official opening last Tuesday at the Maritime Museum of an impressive banner display which showcases, publicly, the combined research of students from six high schools across The USA, Japan and Australia. These banners will form part of a public exhibition at the Museum over the next 18 months as well as part of a travelling exhibition both nationally and overseas. Our St Raphael’s Stage 5 students are published historians! Thanks go to Miss Zideluns and Mr Lette for their efforts in bringing out the best in our students. Complementing the War and Peace in the Pacific Project was the selection of a Peace Youth Ambassador representing each of the three nations involved in the project. Olivia McLennan, one of our year 9 students, was selected as Australia’s representative and Kate P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
Price from year 10 was asked by the Museum to attend as a delegate. Thanks go to Mrs Flannery for her work in preparing both Olivia and Kate for this program. Both girls participated in a week long range of activities with the Ambassadors and delegates from Japan and the USA which included representing our school and country at a Cowra Peace Bell memorial service, Remembrance Day services, youth UN discussions and were special guest speakers at multiple forums, the itinerary was extensive. This past week has been an unforgettable time of remarkable experiences and the forging of lifelong friendships for Olivia and Kate as well as for the teachers involved in these events.
