St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 4, Week 8/B Newsletter 3 December 2018 Also on Wednesday students from Year 6 to Year 12 will have the chance to mix at the Student Social at St Raphael’s Hall (6:30pm-9:30pm). Thank you to those staff members and parents who volunteered for supervision and canteen duties to enable this event to go ahead. Dear Parents, On last Thursday evening students in the Sacramental program made their First Reconciliation. We all understand that becoming fitter, stronger, better takes time, endurance and many small steps of improvement. Reconciliation is the Sacrament that supports us as we grow better and stronger. It is one of the three “growing Sacraments” – those that we use regularly and repeatedly for healing and improvement (the other two are Eucharist and Anointing the Sick).
This week our new VET students undertake their White Card training that enables them to do Work Placement during Stage 6 - yet another stepping stone from “Kindy to Career.”

Children being physically active in their daily lives sets up an excellent habit for their future. I have recently seen a significant increase in the number of students riding bikes or scooters to school rather than being delivered and collected at the gates. Of course this is an activity that needs to be allowed with consideration of age and stage of maturity. I strongly encourage you to consider this as an option for your children with a couple of provisos; that students know and practice road rules and that they are kitted correctly and safely. Swimsafe commences again this week for another year and we hope the children sustain their energy for the coming days. That they will become more confident and capable in the water is a wonderful asset for them. Thank you to Mrs McNamara, Mr O’Reilly and Infants Teachers for leading such an important aspect of the children’s life. Within the next two weeks students who have attained Silver and Gold levels in positive behaviours for learning will be participating in some privileged activities by way of recognition of their positive attitude and contribution throughout the year. “No Waste Wednesday” is on this week for students in Kindergarten to Year 6. The challenge is to pack food for school with the minimum amount of packaging. Packaging waste of course goes into landfill and this is an exercise to test whether it is feasible to target no waste from our 300 odd lunchboxes.
Advent, the season of preparation for the coming of Christ at Christmas. It is a season of anticipation. The anticipation of Advent comes from anticipating the birth of the Christ in Jesus of Nazareth. Advent is a time to celebrate the coming of the King and to spend time reflecting on the implications of that for humanity: mostly, this centers around the forgiveness of God, God’s compassion, God’s love.
In our hectic modern world, however, it is easy to get distracted, and the Christmas music on the radio and decorations in the stores tend to increase our anxiety. No wonder so many people are tired of Christmas by the time Christmas Day finally arrives!
CSYMA students from Year 9 are spending time during Wednesday visiting with the elderly at Bilyara. Such social connections across generations enriches the lives of both the young and the old.
Lord God, only you can see into my heart and know that under all the busy-ness of my life there is a deep longing to make this Advent one that welcomes you more deeply into my life Amen

Major Raffle It took some time for this lucky lady to come down from cloud nine! Presentation to the first prize winner of the major raffle WHERE IN THE WORLD? Mrs Anne Hickman receiving her $5000 travel voucher from publicity officer Alison Rutledge. The raffle was supported by individuals across two states NSW and QLD near and far, a big thank you to those who purchased and sold tickets and assisted with the promotion via email and social media. Net returns from the raffle are approximately $7750, a massive kick start to project primary playground. New reversible towers for basketball/netball arrived in Cowra last week, ready for installation in the new year, lots of other ideas in the pipeline, with the project hoped to be completed by April 2019.
WELL DONE Congratulations to the following students who have achieved the next level .
