St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 4, Week 1/A Newsletter 10 October 2017

Dear Parents, Welcome to Term 4, the term when the learning from the previous three terms is drawn together, the great achievements are celebrated and the planning for next year is in overdrive. I want to acknowledge the immense work of the staff for the work invested in the inaugural Year 12 Graduation events of term 3. Additionally, I thank them for the support of Year 12 holiday study sessions. Today our travellers return from their tour of Japan along with fellow travellers from La Salle College at Lithgow. We are keen to hear all the tales of the tour. During the holidays the administration and staff areas of the school were refurbished along with the exam room (S23) upgraded blinds and lighting, pest control (spiders, insects and pigeons), glass cleaning, carpet cleaning, additional secondary playground seating. We await the arrival of the new lockers for the MSLC.

On Thursday we are conducting Secondary Parent / Teacher Discussions for which you made appointments at the close of last term. You are encouraged to bring your secondary aged children along to participate in these learning discussions. On Thursday the third Kindy Start session will be held and we welcome prospective students to the St Raphs family. Best wishes to our Year 9 students embarking on the week-long Outward Bound expedition with Miss Zideluns. The HSC begins next week and we particularly wish our Year 12 students a clear head and steady hand to enable them to do justice to their 13 years of schooling. Keep our candidates in your prayers please. A reminder that summer uniform (including school hat) is to be worn during terms 4 and 1.

On Tuesday our series of creations for the Archibull competition will be judged. This marks the culmination of many months of hard, collaborative work by students, staff and community. To mark this event a reception will be held at the MSLC on Monday evening to meet and welcome the panel of judges. You are most welcome to attend from 5:45pm. On Wednesday our Year 8 students are undertaking the Religious Knowledge test that is being administered across the diocese. Earlier in the year, Year 6 students undertook a similar assessment. As limited as this test is as an assessment tool, it is reassuring to see consistently sound results being achieved by our students. Year 11 reports, marking the end of their Preliminary studies, are in the final stage of preparation and will be issued in Week 2.

Lord God, At the beginning of this new term teach us to be your hands and feet where we are, At the beginning of this new term teach us to love as you love us At the beginning of this new term teach us to make the most of the talents we have been gifted At the beginning of this new term teach us to Embrace all people for who they are At the beginning of this new term teach us to pray for those in need Amen

St.Raphael's Representative Abroad During the holidays, Year 7 student Mikey McNamara traveled to New Zealand as part of the Group Ten Rugby League Under 13 Representative Team. Mikey spent just over a week in the North Island, playing against three teams from Auckland and Rotorua. Two wins and a draw saw the boys go through their trip undefeated. A mighty effort in anyone's book! This has been the first trip overseas to play footy for Mikey, but hopefully not the last. He has a very clever mind for footy, reminding many of Peter Sterling, the great Parramatta Eels halfback. Congratulations and best of luck with your future Representative exploits.

The boys competitive team narrowly missed representing the Cowra Region with a very close match in the final round. St Raphael’s (red) girls competitive team won three of their five games, all playing well and developing their skills as the day progressed. St Raphael’s (blue) girls competitive team were undefeated for the entire day. This enables them to represent the Cowra Region in the Southern New South Wales State Finals to be held in Canberra in Term Four. A great day was had by all! It was great to see the impeccable behaviour and sportsmanship from all St Raphael’s Teams and individuals. Well done to the girls and good luck in Canberra!

Tip Sheet on Learning Discussions Reflect: Think about the discussion in advance and set a goal for what you want to achieve. Prepare: Talk to your child. Identify questions to ask, such as “Is my child achieving at the appropriate level? What do you see as his or her strengths?” Be Proactive: Ask how work is assessed / graded. Ask what you can do at home to help your child. Ask how the teacher will both challenge and support your child when he or she needs it. Share: Be sure to share your thoughts and feelings about your child. Share with the teacher what you think your child is good at. Explain what he or she needs more help with. Make an Action Plan: Agree on a plan with the teacher. Write it down – noting especially what you will do to support the teacher / school at home. Schedule a follow up meeting if necessary. Follow up with your child: Talk with your child about how the meeting went. Discuss with your child what you learned. Show him or her how you will help with learning at home.
