St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 4, Week 2/B Newsletter 17 October 2016 A clear direction, strong commitment and collaborative plan for each child is the ideal way begin the new term. Dear Parents Next Tuesday (Oct 25th) is the Asylum Seekers and Refugee presentation by world renowned authority, Phil Glendenning.
Michael Gallagher Principal
Social justice holds that all people are equal and should be treated with dignity and respect. As a Catholic school, St Raphael’s aims to expose its people to experiences where they can learn about social justice issues, spread awareness about social justice issues and do something practical about social justice issues. As we are aware, huge numbers of people, made homeless through conflict, are moving through Europe in such magnitude as has not been seen since the end of WWII. One problem for us is that we find it difficult to understand why, or even to get the facts on the issues that have led to this situation. It is an emotive subject for many and one that is clouded by lack of information as well as misinformation and inevitably…politics. As a school, we recognise the need for information based on evidence, not just on short media grabs or from talk back radio. Therefore we have Phil Glendenning here next Tuesday to help us get a real handle on the truth of the situation. Come, listen, question and learn – Oct 25, 7:30pm at the Mother Scholastica Learning Centre. On Saturday evening next weekend twenty nine candidates will have their commitment Confirmed by Bishop Michael McKenna. Although the ceremony is grand, what is really happening there is of much greater significance – these young people have made the decision to commit to a way of life patterned on the life of Jesus and in full partnership with the Holy Spirit. It is that commitment we celebrate because it is heroic. On Wednesday and Thursday we will represented at Olympic Park by three fine St Raph’s athletes representing Polding for State selection. Best of luck to our representatives, Mikelli, Madyson and Riley. On Thursday representative cricket girls will be travelling to Canberra Thank you to all those parents who participated in the Parent / Teacher learning discussions last week. P.O. Gifts of the Spirit God of love and of life, let us take time to look deep within ourselves and discover the gifts you have blessed us with. May we take the time to direct our lives in a way that best uses our own unique combination of gifts. May our education help us discover where our strengths and interests lie. May our faith guide us in realizing our gifts. May we always be open to the direction of the Spirit and never forget the love you have for each of us. Phil Glendenning - Public Lecture St Raphael’s Parish Council would like to extend an invitation to you to attend a Public Lecture on Tuesday October 25th at 7.30pm in the Mother Scholastica Learning Centre at St Raphael’s School. Prominent refugee advocate Phil Glendenning will visit our parish again to speak on the subject of refugees and asylum seekers. Accompanying Phil will be a 21 year old Afghan Hazara man who will speak first-hand about his experiences as a refugee from the Taliban in Afghanistan. The aim of the lecture is to give the general public the truth behind the refugee and asylum seeker debate (rather than the myths). Hopefully then people will be inspired to put pressure on our political leaders to change the way Australia deals with the humanitarian crises happening in so many countries around the world. Phil Glendenning is President of the Refugee Council of Australia and has been Director of the Edmund Rice Centre since its inception in 1996. He is widely sought after for media comment and consultancy in Australia and overseas.

The best way to describe this type of hockey is to say that it is like ice hockey, but without ice or skates, and played using a lightweight ‘hockey’ ball. It is fast paced and a whole lot of fun. This competition will not be affiliated with any State or Governing body. As such there will be no player injury insurance. Players play at their own risk.
