St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 1, Week 4/B Newsletter 31 October 2016

Dear Parents Year 10 participated in the annual retreat last Thursday and Friday and focused on Stepping Up To Leadership. The retreat was conducted at the Bathurst Goldfields which proved to be an excellent venue (with Jaimie Whincup’s car providing significant background sound from the mountain). Fr Laurie’s participation and Mrs Bischof’s thorough preparations and presentations ensured an excellent and challenging agenda. Year 11 joined with other Stage 6 student from around the diocese at iRise 2016. Again the focus was on leadership with all its expressions and challenges. Fr Rob Galea and his musicianship was quite a hit. Thank you to Mr Cooley and Mrs Whiteley who accompanied Year 11.

At the end of last term we sadly farewelled Ms Natalia Williams our Centacare counsellor. As from last week we have two new Centacare support people attending for three days a week. I am sure you will welcome Ms Meg Price and Ms Natalie Single as they serve the need of our children. Christmas Fair preparations are racing along at the moment. The collective benefits we receive from this event are enormous – therefore your participation in both the preparations and the event are a direct support for our children.

All Saints Day - Nov 1

The Book Fair wrapped up last week. Thanks to the hundreds who have been through and have made their selections. Thank you to Mrs Kerrie Skinner for bringing this valuable opportunity to the families of St Raphs. Year 9 students participating in Outward Bound are away this week with Mr Cooley at the Namadji National Park south of Canberra. This experience is rather confronting in the challenges it presents and it is always revealing about where one’s real limitations are (not the perceived limits). Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) is about challenging our thinking and problem-solving capacity in these areas and, while they are integrated into courses at secondary level, this week selected Stage 3 students will be participating in STEM activities with other Cowra students on Tuesday and Wednesday. Every year the Church recalls the example, witness, and prayer of the holy women and men who have been identified by the Church as Saints. These saints are more than just role models; they are family members with whom we continue to share relation, in a bond of prayer, called the Communion of Saints.
