St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 4, Week 6/B Newsletter 14 November 2016 Be: In Solidarity
Dear Parents During the coming weeks at school the important task of staff recruitment is being undertaken. Careful selection of the best staff available goes a long way to determining the tone of a school which is a major reason behind our current strength. Your attendance at next Saturday evenings Mass (Nov 19) and thanksgiving would be very much appreciated. Following Mass will be dinner in the Convent Courtyard. The purpose of the event is to reflect on the year that has passed, celebrate achievements and support one another in the good work done in the name of the parish. Stage 5 Exams are on the agenda this week and we wish those students well in their preparations. May their hands be steady and their minds clear. Our K-6 Talent Show is being conducted on Wednesday from 11:30am at St Raphael’s Hall. Parents of Kindergarten children in 2017 are meeting on Thursday evening. In finalising the Kindy Start process it appears that we will enjoy two very nicely sized classes to start the schooling process for the HSC cohort of 2029. Best of luck to our current Kindergarten groups who participate in the annual Hospital Excursion on Friday. You will notice the installation of our digital school sign is now complete on Lachlan Street. Hopefully the information presented there will assist you and the whole community to stay abreast the many happening of the school year.
As Catholics we are called to Be in Solidarity – to stand shoulder to shoulder with the voiceless, the powerless, the homeless and the helpless. The first step to being in Solidarity is to recognise the connection that exists between us all. As human beings, we are all part of a global family. The things that we have in common are far greater than the things that separate us. Jesus reminds us that the greatest commandment of all is twofold: to love God and to love neighbour. God who is three in one, Your very being speaks to us of community. From the beginning you have called your people to be in right relationship with one another. Teach us what it means to be one with you and one in solidarity with your lowly ones. We make this prayer through Mary, mother of all. Amen

Our next stop was the zoo! We arrived at Billabong Camp late in the afternoon to unpack the bus and find our tents. After dinner and a dingo talk we headed off on a night walk through the Australian animals. We watched the baby koalas and some of the lucky students were able to pat a wallaby. Next we trekked to the education centre and learnt about reptiles, patting a bearded dragon, a shingleback and blue tongue lizard. On the way back our guides spotted another not so friendly reptile but luckily kept us all away and it out of sight. We were finally all tucked up in bed at 10pm, ready for our 6am wake up call. After breakfast we packed our bags and headed for our morning walk. Our guides taught us about the Siamangs and the White-handed Gibbon. Then we were able to feed the tigers and meet the baby elephant. After a very long two days we headed back to Cowra, ready for a well deserved rest. We would like to thank Lisa Price, Deenita Mitchell and Scott Bryant for being our fantastic parent helpers. We couldn’t have done it without you! We had a WILD time.

Year 3 Dubbo Zoo Excursion What an adventure Year 3 had last Tuesday and Wednesday heading off on our excursion to Wellington Caves and the Dubbo Zoo. Our first stop was the Wellington Caves, where we escaped the heat and headed underground to explore beautiful crystal stalactites and stalagmites. We learnt about different types of rocks and looked at fossil excavated from the caves.
Some of our favourite bits:Wellington Caves was interesting, fun and scary. Some of the crystals were so big and cool- Flynn J I loved the blue water in Wellington Caves and the crystals- Phillipa I loved the historic information about Wellington Caves. I also liked the new baby elephant, even though it was raining he was still walking about- Holly I heard the lion roar when we were in bed in our tent- Copper D I liked the tigers. I saw them getting fed the chicken necks and they jumped up on the cage- Jackson I liked going on the night walk and seeing the reptiles. I also liked how we got to camp out under the stars. - Flynn H 2017 Kindergarten Information Evening Kindergarten Enrollment acceptance letters have been posted to the families of our 2017 Kindergarten students.
