St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 4, Week 6/B Newsletter 13 November 2017 Prayer of Remembrance Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict, and ask that God may give us peace:
Dear Parents, During this term at school the important task of staff recruitment is underway. Careful selection of the best staff available goes a long way to determining the tone of a school which is a major reason behind our current strength. Staffing levels, of course, are linked to enrolments which is why I constantly ask that the school be promptly informed if your plans could impact our enrolments. Stage 5 Exams are on the agenda this week and we wish those students well in their preparations. May their hands be steady and their minds clear.
For the service men and women who have died in the violence of war, each one remembered by and known to God; May God give peace, God give peace For those who love them in death as in life, offering the distress of our grief and the sadness of our loss; May God give peace. For all members of the armed forces who are in danger this day, remembering family, friends and all who pray for their safe return; May God give peace, God give peace For civilian women, children and men whose lives are disfigured by war or terror, calling to mind in penitence the anger and hatreds of humanity; May God give peace.
Parents of Kindergarten children in 2018 are meeting on Thursday evening. In finalising the Kindy Start process it appears that we will enjoy two very nicely sized classes to start the schooling process for the HSC cohort of 2030.
For peace-makers and peace-keepers, who seek to keep this world secure and free; May God give peace, God give peace. For all who bear the burden and privilege of leadership, political, military and religious; asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve in the search for reconciliation and peace. May God give peace.
We are ecstatic about our primary students and their success in the Todd Woodbridge Cup last week. What a wonderful experience to not only play at Olympic Park but to spend time with Todd. Congratulations to our tennis players for being not only great sportspeople but great ambassadors for our school and community.
O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever.
Final planning is being done now for next week when “Sow-phie” and representatives from the Archibull Team head off to Sydney for the awards. That we were selected to enter this exclusive competition is a wonderful tribute let alone being named among the finalists. This is a great recognition of the calibre and hard work of students and staff at this school.
Amen.

Builders/Concreters of the Future! Year 1 GOLD were both interested and inspired to have to basics of concreting formwork explained to us by Mr Lowe and his students Aiden and Joe. Mr Lowe explained (in very basic building talk) the need for levels in formwork. Mr Lowe asked 1 GOLD interesting questions too. He loaned 1 GOLD a plumb line and a water level so that we could make our own incidental discoveries concerning building levels. After using this equipment, some students felt that not all vertical edges in our classroom were indeed level! This was a wonderful spontaneous opportunity to demonstrate to the practical minded students of Year 1 GOLD, the diversity of courses potentially available for them all, in the not so far off future, at our senior secondary school department. Thanks very much Mr Lowe, Aiden and Joe. Mrs White and 1 GOLD students

SES Cadet Program Cowra SES unit in conjunction with St Raphael’s Catholic School has recently completed a ten week cadet program. The program is designed to give the cadets training in a number of subjects including safety, teamwork, communications, principles of emergency management and team leading skills. The course concluded on Sunday 5th November with a full day of training activities including land and water based search and rescue at Wyangala Dam. (Special thanks to Miss Atkinson for assisting). Mr Karl Milic, Cowra SES Local Controller, said that he is “very pleased that the school has actively participated in the program and the assistance of school staff and Cowra unit members in running the program has been excellent, ensuring that the program has been of enormous benefit to the students”. SES membership is open to all people over the age of sixteen. For those members of the public that feel that they cannot undertake the rigorous training of a rescuer or field operator the Cowra SES unit has vacancies for administrative, logistic and operations centre volunteers. The unit trains weekly on a Tuesday night commencing at 7.00 pm and members of the public are invited to visit at any time for more information on how they can help the community as an SES volunteer. For further information on volunteering, call the SES on 1800 201 000 or visit the SES website at www.ses.nsw.gov.au. For emergency help the SES on 132 500.
