St Raphael’s Catholic School Term 4, Week 8/B Newsletter 27 November 2017

Dear Parents On Thursday evening students in the Sacramental program will be making their First Reconciliation. We all understand that becoming fitter, stronger, better takes time, endurance and many small steps of improvement. Reconciliation is the Sacrament that supports us as we grow better and stronger. It is one of the three “growing Sacraments” – those that we use regularly and repeatedly for healing and improvement (the other two are Eucharist and Anointing the Sick). Children being physically active in their daily lives sets up an excellent habit for their future. I have recently seen a significant increase in the number of students riding bikes or scooters to school rather than being delivered and collected at the gates. Of course this is an activity that needs to be allowed with consideration of age and stage of maturity. I strongly encourage you to consider this as an option for your children with a couple of provisos; that students know and practice road rules and that they are kitted correctly and safely. The P&F Christmas Fair on last Friday evening was an excellent achievement resulting from hard, collaborative work by many and strong leadership from Mrs Allison Rutledge. I want to publicly acknowledge the enormous number of hours of work freely given from precious spare time by those who crafted this exceptional event. We are privileged to have such generosity from good people.

Feast of Christ the King Christ the King Sunday celebrates the all-embracing authority of Christ as King and Lord of all things. It celebrates the role of Jesus as King over all the universe. However, we must recall that Jesus is King because he is a humble servant. Jesus' kingship is one of power and might, but also love and humility. Lord Jesus, when You walked the earth, Your humility obscured Your Kingship. Your meekness confused the arrogant, Hindering them from grasping Your purpose, Teach me to model after Your eminence, To subject my human nature to humility. Grant me with a natural inclination To never view myself greater than anyone. Banish all lingering sparks of self-importance That could elevate me greater than You. Let my heart always imitate Your humility! Amen

Swimsafe has concluded for another year and we hope the children rebound strongly after the high levels of exhaustion. That they are now more confident and capable in the water is a wonderful asset for them. Thank you to Monica Blazley for leading such an important aspect of their life. This afternoon as part of our outreach to the community, an i-Device Workshop is being run for St Raphael's parishioners. Twelve people have signed up and the presenters are Year 9 boys Lucas Pearce, Isaak Dawes, Ben Myers and Tom Heilman who have volunteered their time and expertise to assist. The workshops will run for three Monday afternoons. This week our new VET students undertake their White Card training that enables them to do Work Placement during Stage 6 - yet another stepping stone from “Kindy to Career.”

The Rite Journey - an exciting new direction for St Raphael’s. 2018 will see the introduction of an exciting new programme for Year 9 students at St Raphael’s called the Rite Journey. The Rite Journey is a unique educational programme designed to support the development of selfaware, vital, responsible and resilient young adults. The programme is targeted at providing students with reference points during the passage to adulthood. The course will run for the school year with one dedicated lesson each week coupled with other dynamic learning activities and challenges. The Rite Journey has achieved some great successes in the schools where it has been implemented. It has been developed with a view to providing a basis to open the doors to many contemporary issues, in ways that are engaging and relevant. It creates an opportunity for much guided reflection, discussion and analysis of issues that are relevant to young people as they journey into adulthood. P.O. Box 7, Cowra 2794 Tel: 6342.2940
