…..That CCNY has had 9 Nobel Laureates? …..Colin Powell is a 1958 graduate of CCNY? …..The Digital Revolution might have been lost if Andrew Grove hadn’t graduated from CCNY in 1960? …..Polio might still be a plague if Jonas Salk didn’t graduate from CCNY in 1934? …..You wouldn’t have an umbrella on a rainy day if Chris Cimino (WNBC Meteorologist) didn’t start looking towards the sky after graduating from City in 1981? …..Nobody would have ever gone through the Panama Canal if George Washington Goethals didn’t graduate from CCNY in 1877? …..the meatpacking industry might still be a jungle if muckraking author Upton Sinclair didn’t graduate from City College in 1897? …..millions of High School students would have been less prepared for the SAT without the help of CCNY 1939 graduate Stanley Kaplan? …..the Knicks might have never won an NBA Championship without 1942 graduate Red Holzman?

Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Program Overview and Highlights

Coming off a sweep to the men's and women's indoor track and field CUNYAC Championships, the City College of New York track and field program is looking to repeat the feat in the spring as they prepare for their outdoor season. "Expectations are high for this outdoor season as both the men and women are hungry for another title." Head coach Hugh Reid said. "The men want to complete the indoor/outdoor 5 peat sweep, while the women are looking to complete the double for the second time in 5 years. We know that it will not be easy, but these scholar athletes are up for the challenge. They are looking to make more than history; they are looking to break records and leave a permanent mark in annals of CCNY and CUNYAC." Senior Peter DeHazya, the CUNYAC Championships MVP for Indoor, will be in the hunt for not only a conference title, but also a potential berth in the NCAA Championships. DeHazya's run of 10.71 in the 100 meter dash last season was the 25th best in the country and was a mark that would have earned All‐ American honors at the Championship final last season. Sophomore Ashley Beaver won three events at the CUNYACs last season, taking first in the hammer throw, discus and shot put, and setting school records along the way. This year, Beaver intends to expand her sphere of dominance to the javelin event. She will compete for a spot at the NCAAs in the discus event. Sophomore Jeckesan Mejia won conference meet MVP honors last season, winning the shot put and taking second in the 110 meter hurdles. Mejia also won the shot put at the indoor championships. Freshman Melissa Paredes had a brilliant rookie indoor season, scoring 28 points in the CUNYAC Championships. Paredes will look to build on that during outdoors. Paredes is expected to challenge school records all season in mid and long distance events. Junior Steve Baker won both the hammer throw and the javelin last season, and is coming off a win in the weight throw at the CUNYAC indoors. With veterans & rookies up and down their roster, CCNY has depth in every event for both men & women.

CCNY Spirit Squad Overview and Highlights The City College of New York Spirit Squad entered it's first year of competition during the 2014 ‐ 2015 academic year. Originally founded with a roster of five, the team grew to thirteen members and became a staple at all of the men's and women's home basketball events. Led by sophomore and junior captains, Laura Silvestre and Nykia Blanks, the squad not only assisted in supporting our student athletes but also worked hard to engage the campus community through appearances at student life sponsored programming such as Club Night at the Towers, weekly tabling in the Rotunda and various Freshman and Transfer Orientations. Not just a promotional club, the team competed in their first CUNYAC championship this past March where they cheered, danced, and stunted to a 5th place finish. Senior member Ashley Beaver, also gained individual accolades in the jump competition placing 4th for her double toe‐touch. The team looks to continue to grow, compete, and promote all things City College in the years to come.

Head Cheer Coach: Joy Ekema‐Agbaw
